Road to Glory
A New Jersey Nets Association

Association Settings
Team: New Jersey Nets
Game: NBA 2K9 PC
Rosters: Juza's Neon Project V 4.0 with Reec's Prospects Patch
Sliders: Juza's Neon Project V 4.1 with slight modifications to suit personal playstyle
Season: 82 Games
Quarter Length: 10 Minutes
Sim Length: 12 Minutes
Playoffs: 7-7-7-7

Welcome to my new association...again. It sucks but technical problems appear one after the other, hopefully this time it won't happen.
I said i wanted to go with a western conference team, but apparently i have a thing for Eastern Conference squads (actually, the West just has too many overpowered teams and the crap teams are really crap...i won't be able to get them any better without trading everyone away, which i would try to avoid doing this time.
This story will be similar to my short-lived Wizards one, featuring an unknown youngster's (my alter-ego) road to glory in the NBA.
The NLSC prospects that have applied will be transferred here, and anymore who wishes to apply for future drafts may do so, i will transfer the recruitment post at some point.

Enjoy

Hong Kong Star Guard Takes Giant Leap, Enters NBA Draft
February 15th 2009

Image
Leo Lai is relatively unknown in the American ball world, but the rising star guard from Hong Kong is by no means a small fry to deal with.

"He does it all, he shoots the lights out from outside, got the speedy first step to take it to the rim, and he defends, what more can you ask for?" said a basketball analysis in Hong Kong

The 17 year old, 6 foot 6, 180 pound guard has drafted several application letters for a special allowance in the draft to the NBA commissioner David Stern, and has finally received the nod from the commissioner this morning.

"I am very, very excited at this opportunity to be able to take my first step towards my dream of becoming a NBA player, what makes it even more special is that I could become the first player from Hong Kong, and hopefully this can path the way for more HK players to challenge the pinnacle of basketball" said Lai in the press conference "I've been working towards this all my life"

In a relatively talent-depleted draft (with the exception of Blake Griffin, Ricky Rubio...) Lai may even end up in the lottery, he is currently being projected as being a mid-late first rounder but his draft stock could rise after scouts from the NBA sees first hand what he is capable of doing on the basketball court.

Lai averaged 37.2 ppg, 5.1 apg, 8.2 rpg, 3.4 bpg, 1.2 spg in 38 mpg on 46% FG, 78% FT, and 39.7% 3P shooting last season in the CBA with the Canton District Team and won MVP honors, he was invited by the Chinese National Team to help them with preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets, who trained alongside Lai during the preparations for the Olympics, praised his HK countryman.

"He's a very smart player, and very gifted with the athletic ability not found on most asians" said Yao

Lai has hired former Chicago Bull B.J. Armstrong as his agent, Armstrong is also the agent of star rookie Derrick Rose.

No More, No Less: Nets gets expected 3rd overall pick

According to the odds, the New Jersey Nets are likely to wound up with the 3rd overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, and fortunately for them (or maybe not), they got just that.

Minnesota overcame the odds and robbed Milwaukee of the 1st overall pick while the Bucks would have to settle with the 2nd overall instead. Poor Indiana got smashed back from the projected 2nd overall to the 4th pick, while the other picks are exactly as projected by the odds. No thrills, no surprises, no disappointments.

What the Nets would do with the 3rd overall pick is uncertain at this point, and general manager Kiki Vandeweghe did not reveal any info, quoting "we are not certain at this moment in time, certainly we would conduct our workouts with a variety of players and scout the talents available in the draft, then make a decision on what our team needs to get to the next level"

I wonder who you're going to pick Lol. Same situation happened with me. I was projected I think the 9 or something overall pick but I ended up getting the 2nd.

It's great you didn't get screwed over and got something lower than 3rd. Good luck with the draft man. (Y)

Sucks the Wizards didn't last. But as you've heard already, do less trades this time. Maybe only something big like trade Carter in a package.

Well, hope this lasts and 2K stops crashing :D

hum..i thought i already have a few solid young big guys in Lopez, Yi, Sean Williams, Josh Boone, and Ryan Anderson...and i don't like any of the bigs in this draft, not even Griffin (he can't shoot!)

thierryhenry50 wrote:Maybe draft Thabeet and trade him for Lai :P

Maybe, anything could happen :P

I am more concerned with the second round pick, i am hoping either Patrick Mills or Eric Maynor will fall to me in the 2nd round (i have the 3rd pick for the 2nd round), but we shall see about that.

Hes gonna take Lai, have him come off the bench for like 2 games before moving Carter to the 3. Lai turns out to be a superstar and averages 30+ PPG and wins everything in his rookie year. They enter the playoffs as a 3 or 4 seed and then it gets corrupted when he gets to the second round.

Chapter 1

Draft Night 2009
Nets Front Office: Draft Room

"You sure he's the one you want?" asked Lawrence Frank "weren't some of the others more impressive then him in the workouts?"
"I am certain" answered Kiki Vandeweghe "He's the guy that the team needs in the future, and not just for the on court reasons either. As for the workouts, don't forget we paired him up against Vince, i didn't expect him to be able to do that well actually. As for round 2, we'll pick up either Mills or Maynor if we are lucky, if not, we'll just pick the best available regardless of position"
"Sure, it's up to you anyways." said Lawrence Frank "Just get me a decent roster to work with."

----------------------------------------

Draft Night 2009
WaMu Theater, Madison Square Garden

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 2009 NBA Draft at the WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden. Tonight marks the fulfillment of the dreams of 60 terrific athletics who have worked all their lives to reach this point. The first pick of this year's draft would be made by the Minnesota Timberwolves, who would have 5 minutes to make their selections." stated David Stern

"Thank you David. Lets look at the Minnesota Timberwolves, plain and simple, who do they need?" asked Stuart Scott

"Well, they are a young team in the post Garnett era, Al Jefferson is the lone bright spot so far, and he needs a lot of help. Kevin Love, their rookie from last season, isn't enough to help Al lift the team, to me, they need a scorer that can be the second offensive option behind Jefferson" said Mark Jackson "The first name comes to mind is of course, Blake Griffin"

"I agree with you Mark, Blake will add to the T'Wolves' front court fire power, and the wolves are going to have a nice one two punch in Jefferson and Griffin, with Mike Miller and Kevin Love providing the bench points." added Jeff Van Gundy

"However, if they do NOT select Griffin, then Blake would slip all the way down to possibly the 6th pick to the Phoenix Suns" said Jay Bilas

"Why is that?" asked Mark Jackson "I thought every team in the top 5 has the need for a dominant offensive force like Blake Griffin"

"They do, but apparently Griffin has stated that he does not want to play in the small markets." answered Jay Bilas "and i heard that he did not impress in the workouts with New Jersey"

"What about Oklahoma City? he doesn't want to play in his home town?"

"Apparently not, New Jersey is the lone place where he would go in the top 5 other then Minnesota, and they would be stupid not to take him, but you never know"

"Well, here comes the commissioner David Stern with the Wolves' Pick" announced Scott

"With the First pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select...." announced David Stern "......Hasheem Thabeet from the University of Connecticut"

The entire WaMu theater looked shocked at the announcement, but quickly gave their applause as the 7'3" center made his way onto the podium.

"Saying this is a bit of a shock is an understatement, as the Timberwolves apparently have decided that Thabeet is better then Blake Griffin and have taken him with their first overall pick. Hasheem averaged 10.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.5 blocks on the season for the Huskies and was projected to go 6th overall." stated Scott "What do you think Jay Bilas?"

"Well, it doesn't change much for the Timberwolves, Al Jefferson would go back and play Power Forward while Thabeet would man the center position. he is bigger then Griffin but not as good, still, i think he could help Minnesota out just as well" said Bilas

"Well, lets head over and hear from the man himself, as he's being interviewed by Stephen A Smith" announced Scott

"So, Hasheem, what are your feelings right now? being drafted number one and all>" asked Stephen A Smith

"I am just happy that the Minnesota Timberwolves organization have decided i am the guy for them, and i would not disappoint them" stated Thabeet

"Well well well, seems like we have a very confident big man right here. Back to you studio"

"Thank you Stephen A, here comes the commissioner David Stern with the second overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks" announced Scott

"With the second pick, of the 2009 NBA Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks select....." announced David Stern ".....Ricky Rubio from Spain"

Rubio got up and hugged his family before heading up to the podium beaming with the entire WaMu theater cheering for him. He shook the commissioner's hand and went towards Stephen A Smith

"No shock here, Milwaukee needed a man to run the show and they got one in Rubio. The Spanish prodigy point guard has comparisons to Pete Maravich. That's how great he is projected to be." stated Scott "Your turn, Stephen A"

"Thanks Stuart, now, Ricky Rubio, you started your professional career at the age of 15, so being a pro is nothing new to you, but how do you think you'll adjust to the NBA game?" asked Stephen A Smith

"Well, i think i will get use to the NBA game quickly, i played against NBA players in last year's Olympic games, and it wasn't all that tough, i think i'll do just fine" answered Rubio before adding "before you know it, i'll be the number 1 point guard in the NBA"

"Another confident young man, i like that, back to you Stuart"

"Here comes commissioner Stern with the Net's pick" announced Stuart Scott "They will go for Griffin won't they?"

"They'll be stupid not to, Griffin is by far the best player in this draft, and the Nets have a big gaping hole at the 4 spot" replied Jeff Van Gundy

"With the third pick, of the 2009 NBA Draft, the New Jersey Nets select...." announced David Stern at the podium "..Leo Lai from Hong Kong, China"

Lai stood up to both the applause and the boos from the New York Crowd, hugged his family and friends and went onto the stage to shake the commissioner's hand, slightly surprised but feeling very happy at being drafted so high and the opportunity to play with one of his childhood idols Vince Carter

"Wow, the Nets are looking for marketing strategies over their winning percentage" joked Mark Jackson, chuckling at the pick

"I just had the same thought, but on a serious note, what kind of a player is this kid? Jay Bilas, you got any info on him?" asked Stuart Scott

"Well, he's a great basketball talent, that's for sure, most likely the best 2 guard in this draft behind James Harden. But what's he doing getting drafted at 3? the mocks have him going anywhere from 7 to 20. The Nets should have drafted Griffin, or Harden if they wanted a replacement for Carter. Lai is not what they need at this point, maybe in a few years."

"I'll just do anything that my team requires me to do in order to win, whether it's score, defend, cheer for my teammates, or handing out Gatorade." said Lai, finishing up his interview with Stephen A Smith

"Thank you, good luck to you. Back to you Stuart"

The Top 5 concluded with Brandon Jennings going 4th to the Pacers and Tyreke Evans going 5th to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Blake Griffin ended up going to Phoenix Arizona after being drafted 6th overall by the Suns, and announced that he was going to get the rookie of the year honors and lead the Suns to the playoffs, then will laugh at Minnesota for passing him up for Hasheem. Harden ended up going 7th, as the Wizards, who were in need of a SG, happily picked him up.

Round 2 of the Draft saw the Nets netting (no pun intended) their desired Australian prospect Patrick Mills from St Mary's. But the biggest steal was by the Phoenix Suns (again) with the 37th pick, drafting Jrue Holiday, formerly projected to go as high as #10 by NBA.com and even #8th by DraftExpress. The Draft concluded with Rick Mercer going to the defending champions LA Lakers.

A Few Days Later
Nets Front Office

"Yes, i'll send the papers through to the league office, nice to be doing business with you Mr Wallace." said Kiki Vandeweghe, finishing his call before placing another one.

"Hello? Mr Kauffman? how is it? Eric has been cleared by the medical staff, there is no risk, and we just want him as a guide for our younger guys. 1 year, 442k as a mentor, he can keep his job at NBA TV as well, what do you say?" asked Vandeweghe

"He's interested, but we'll have to get back to you" answered Kauffman before hanging up

Vandeweghe sighed and got his documents ready before going to the conference room to get his response from another free agent....

"Well? Mr Schwartz, Chris? What do you guys think of my offer? 1 year, 1 million with a team option on the second year" asked Vandeweghe

"3 Million over 2 years, with a player option on the end." replied Schwartz

Kiki laughed "Are you serious? you know that, with all due respect, Chris is not worth that much money."

"Then why do you want him?"

"Because we need someone to be the backup guy if we have an injury." replied Vandeweghe "Final offer, 1.4 million with a team option"

"Make it 1.43 Million with the option being 1.75 Mill" answered Schwartz "Nothing less"

"Deal"

Oh come on Lamrock, i don't want the file to be corrupted either for the Bulls dynasty, and the Wizards one....it was just crashing for no reason, should be fine now since i reinstalled the game and everything....and no Lai isn't going to be a superstar in his rookie year lol....just wait and see  don't go cold on me yet man
