He was very important, he's 4th in the league in assists per game behind Nash, Kidd and Rondo... maybe you don't see him a lot like a playmaker, but he's having a really nice season so far, a career-high 8+ assists.

I'll try to post the game at Golden State tonight. After that comes the first Monthly Report. You guys can't believe it, can you?

Ginobili, Parker power Spurs past Warriors, overcome Maggette's injury
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: GSW)

OAKLAND, November 30 -- ESPN's Woody Hannes might have told you in his preview that the running offense of Golden State would tear down San Antonio's defense wall, but it was Manu Ginobili and the Spurs' 4th quarter pressure that proved too much as they handed the Warriors a 108-101 loss. With both teams making half their attempts in the first half, and the Spurs down by 9 because of dumb miscues, Ginobili and Tony Parker went to work and put their team in the driver seat, making a 12-2 run to claim the lead. A back-and-forth game, switching leads at least 10 times in the whole contest, it was clear during the fourth quarter that the win would be decided in the last minute. The Warriors made a run of their own, and held an 5-point lead with 2:10 remaining. Ginobili carried the team on his shoulders and scored 6 unanswered points for a 102-101 lead with 58 seconds left; he finished with a season-high 27 points. A block by Tim Duncan on Monta Ellis gave the Spurs a chance for the win, as Parker led the fastbreak and scored a layup for a 104-101 lead. Ellis then had an airball 3-pointer; two final baskets by Larry Hughes sealed the win for San Antonio.

Ellis had a game-high 30 points for Golden State and offseason signee Dorell Wright added a season-high 23, on 10-of-15 shooting. Reggie Williams scored 16 points, but left the game in the start of the second period with a twisted ankle and returned in the third. Duncan scored 14 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked 4 shots to boot, as Hughes notched in 10 for the Spurs. David Lee had a season-high 16 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Warriors, who flopped beyond the arc. While San Antonio stretched its lead on 31-of-36 shots from the free throw line, Golden State couldn't seriously make a run because of only 8-of-23 3-pointers and a 4-minute stretch without a field goal in the third quarter. Wright was 2-of-4 from 3s, but Stephen Curry was 4-for-13 and wasted an otherwise solid 16-point, 7-assist night. Spurs' Corey Maggette suffered a hard fall just two minutes into the game when he was fouled by Golden State's Andris Biedrins, who was assessed a flagrant foul. Just as Williams, Maggette suffered a twisted ankle but didn't return and spent practically the entire game in the locker room with ice in his ankle.

Gary Neal entered in Maggette's place and went 4-for-10 from the floor overall and hit two key 3s in the second half for 12 points. “In these last couple of games I've been really aggressive,” he said. “Coach and my teammates want me to be aggressive, they gave me the green light to shoot.” Biedrins had 5 points, 8 rebounds and a season-high 6 blocks for Golden State. “We need to do a better job as starters coming out and holding our leads in the game,” the center from Latvia said. “It's going to be a while before the chemistry, the flow, comes through. Half of our team is new, even a new coaching staff.” Beyond Ginobili and Parker's scoring efforts, the Spurs still needed people to be the garbage men: Neal, Hughes and the rest of the Spurs' backups combined for 44 points, against Golden State's 19 bench points. There was nothing poetic or supernatural about the way the Spurs won: they lured the Warriors into their game and defeated them at it. One of the simplest stories, as Ginobili said: “When it came down to it, we made shots and they didn't.”

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Spurs Beat

Injury woes frustrate Maggette; his absence could spark others
    nba.com/spurs/beat | November 30th, 2010

SAN ANTONIO -- Like that proverb says: “one man’s loss is another man’s gain”. Corey Maggette, who has started all 17 games for San Antonio this season, will likely miss at least a week of action with a twisted ankle that was suffered during a collision with Andris Biedrins in the Spurs' 108-101 win over the Golden State Warriors. That means the other swingman that was acquired by the Spurs, Larry Hughes, will get an opportunity to show his skills as a starter when the Spurs fly to Los Angeles to face the Clippers (6-12) tomorrow morning.

Maggette and Hughes were the biggest roster additions for the Spurs. Maggette has dealt with nagging injuries in his career, specially in 2005-06, when he missed 50 games: “It’s been challenging, obviously... disappointing for me so far in terms of injuries, but obviously trials and tribulations make you stronger. You never can be successful if you don’t fail.” With 65 games remaining on the regular season, using the word “fail” is probably a bit harsh, but Corey knows that to this point he hasn’t delivered on expectations. He guarantees that he will regain his productiveness by the end of the season, but we may only have to wait until next week, when he comes back with hunger to score and lead the squad. “I know some people that were happy about me coming to the Spurs aren’t happy quite yet with what they’ve seen so far,” Maggette said before continuing, “but I can guarantee all of you, before the season is over, they’ll be really happy with my play.” Maggette's injury will create opportunities and responsibilities for other players, who will be more than happy filling the gap and playing harder.

In previous weeks, with James Anderson out for a week and the Spurs being reluctant to toss Manu Ginobili onto the court with his lower back strain, it was clear that the team SF & SG positions were a bit thin. They are back, slowly picking theirselves up, but not at a 100% yet. Now, with Maggette being added to the injury list -- the Spurs activated center Matt Bonner -- Hughes' availability is that much more important. Signed on November 4, Hughes has played on 13 games, all from the bench, averaging 9.3 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in more of a scoring role, but hasn’t been able to establish any form of rhythm or endurance. That’s beginning to change, because the minutes Maggette misses out will fall directly into Hughes' lap. For him personally, the ability to play as a starter in the lineup is huge. “I haven’t been able to play extended minutes. But I think that playing more minutes from now on is going to get my comfort level back. Corey can rest assured I'll do my best,” Hughes said. “We have a great group of guys, and they’re really trying to get me going. I don't want to let them down. They’ve really been looking for me on for 3-pointers, layups and open jumpers. I’m really putting that much added pressure on myself, because obviously I want to do well for this organization, for this city, but even more for the fans.” If the things continue to click for Hughes tonight -- he's shooting a career-high .550% -- it may not be the case of Maggette’s loss being only his gain: it may wind up being an enormous gain for the entire team.

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Monthly Report (Oct/Nov, Part 1.)

♦ Bonjour, faithful readers and Spur fans worldwide! It’s just me, Thierry, checking in from the AT&T Center. I haven't written since the last Morning Coffee, but the first month of the season is on the books and it required a “rewind”. No need to repeat I bought the team from Peter Holt; we held training camp here at our beautiful team facilities as we welcomed in a slew of new faces. The experience of holding my first training camp for the Spurs was very rewarding. Gone were the likes of Richard Jefferson, Keith Bogans, Michael Finley, Malik Hairston, Marcus Haislip, Roger Mason, Ian Mahinmi and as I like to call him, "Spur failure" Richard Jefferson. Replacing them were guys like James Anderson, Alonzo Gee, Larry Hughes, Gary Neal, Tiago Splitter, and Corey Maggette, as we focused on getting ready for the upcoming campaign.

The Spurs started 3-0 with great performances, but blew my prediction with a loss in the 4th game, at Phoenix, by 14 points... had to change it to 81-1. The loss was made easier to swallow because of new players playing bigger roles -- both Manu Ginobili and Anderson out with injuries. Anderson got injured right out of the gate in his NBA debut, that's what I call bad luck. Despite heroics by Tim Duncan and Maggette at Houston three days later, the Spurs were into their first losing streak of the campaign. But it was obvious that things were turning around soon with a game against Charlotte coming as they were struggling at 1-5. The next game, Neal made 9-of-11 shots, all in the second half, as we dropped the Clippers at the AT&T coming from 19 points down.

San Antonio won its third straight when they clobbered the Sixers 101-83 three nights later. Two more losses by double-digits, at Oklahoma City and then here in Texas against the Bulls, saw Gregg Popovich giving Duncan a rest against the Jazz, who were struggling at 3-9 at that moment; Manu and Splitter stepped up for the triumph. Duncan and Maggette formed a formidable 1-2 punch in a 24-point win over Cleveland, but no doubt, the highlight of the month was the Spurs' dramatic 118-113 overtime win over Orlando, where Manu held Vince Carter to 22 points on 13-for-63 shooting -- eight field goal attempts below his average. Still trying to figure how we overcame Dwight Howard's beast night (37 pts [16-20 fg], 17 boards, 7 blocks).

Two days later, Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis had Wayne Ellington attempt a jumper to send the game to OT, but Manu promptly smacked it into Saturn to preserve the win. There were stuffed turkeys that had a better Thanksgiving than our beloved team, as one day after, the loss against Dallas saw boos coming from our fans; I have to admit I'm not happy about this. More wins will come soon and the fans will be proud. Two more wins, at New Orleans and at Golden State, closed the month, kind to the Spurs tradition, sitting at 12-5 and third in the West. Paid the entire team, roster & coaching staff, a dinner: I know we are just getting warmed up.

2010, November 8 – Tiago Splitter @ Charlotte Bobcats: Newcomer Tiago Splitter was unstoppable on both ends of the court. Splitter collected 13 points, 11 rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals as the San Antonio Spurs coasted to an 82-68 victory of the Charlotte Bobcats. A 6-11 forward-center with great leaping ability, Splitter posted all career-highs tonight. “They kept coming to the hole and I just tried to protect it,” said Splitter, who had incredible defense. “My timing was on tonight to contest their shots. That's just part of my game, I take pride in it.” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich added, “Tiago did a great job. Tonight we needed that. You need to have one guy like him to be in the paint and protect the basket. Just think of how many points they would have gotten without him.” (Read More ... )

2010, November 10 - Gary Neal @ Los Angeles Clippers: TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager walked to Tim Duncan to ask him about his feelings on this outstanding comeback win. “Tim, Jordan Player of the Game. Great rally to defeat the Clippers. How do you -- ” Sager couldn't finish his question as Duncan stopped him, “What are you doing here Craig? You should be talking to Gary. He was our savior.” Gary Neal, the 26-year-old rookie, with stops in Turkey, Spain and Italy, was the hero for the Spurs as he led two separate 11-0 runs to come back from a 19-point hole and score a career-high 24 points to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers, 106-99. “Gary has made more progress than I could’ve ever imagined to get where he is, and this quickly,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “I think Thierry has done a really good job with him, making him believe in himself. They've known each other for years in Europe. We thought that he could help us defensively, but his offense has exceeded all expectations.” Neal made 9-of-11 field goals, including a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, all in the second half as the Spurs rallied for the W. (Read More ... )

2010, November 20 - Corey Maggette vs. Cleveland Cavaliers: The San Antonio Spurs exposed the shortcomings of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 24 destructive minutes. Corey Maggette scored 18 points to lead six Spurs in double figures and Tony Parker had 14 and 12 assists as San Antonio dominated the second half en route to a 111-87 thumping of the Cavaliers. Cleveland is playing without injured backups Leon Powe and Christian Eyenga; despite the absence of these two, the Cavs recovered from a 12-point deficit in the first half to lead 52-49 at halftime, but had no one fill their shoes later and were outrebounded 18-9 in the final 24 minutes. Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said, “We felt the loss of Leon and Christian in the second half. Their defensive presence could have come in handy. We lost our intensity. They made a run and we knew that they were going to because all good teams make a run. They got back quick and we struggled to make our shots.” (Read More ... )

2010, November 13 - Big 3 works flawlessly vs. Philadelphia 76ers: Manu Ginobili and coach Gregg Popovich did not have anything to complain about Saturday. Ginobili scored 12 points in each half to finish with a season-high 24 as the San Antonio Spurs posted a 51-37 second half and rolled to a 101-83 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Exactly a week ago against Houston, the Spurs suffered a Yao Ming who was unstoppable, with 27 points and 15 rebounds, and lost 104-92, its second double-digit loss in a row, but the immediate future can't look any brighter for San Antonio. Corey Maggette started the scoring with a jumper but then Philly had no mistakes and were leading 20-12, but made 3 turnovers in a row and Tony Parker scored a 3-pointer and a lay-up to begin a 12-2 run, and close the first period 29-26 for Popovich's squad. The Spurs never trailed thereafter and finished the first half with a 4-point advantage into the break. “We got off to a slow start offensively, but defensively we were more than acceptable,” said Parker, who finished with his first double-double of the year with 14 points and 15 assists for the Spurs. (Read More ... )

2010, November 22 - Manu & Duncan overcome Howard's supernatural effort vs. Orlando Magic: Gregg Popovich walked into the Spurs huddle and offered his squad a little advice after a chaotic finish at the end of regulation: he essentially told his team to forget about the show that Dwight Howard was putting on in Texas. “Coach said in the huddle, 'Forget about him. Don't think of him,'” Spurs guard Tony Parker said. “We can't think backwards, that's not an option. We got to think forwards: that's what we did.” Did they ever... despite watching Howard transform the AT&T Center into his personal playground, the Spurs didn't panic and eventually escaped the Defensive Player of the Year's performance with a thrilling 118-113 overtime victory over the Orlando Magic. Howard was unstoppable as he poured in a game-high 37 points against the Spurs' helpless frontcourt. Howard shot 16-of-20 from the field, grabbed 17 rebounds and even had 7 blocks in his statline, but San Antonio survived his heroics with a 6-0 run to close overtime. (Read More ... )

2010, November 24 - Six Spurs over 11 points @ Minnesota Timberwolves: The San Antonio Spurs may not be blowing their opponents out, but they're certainly playing some of their best team basketball. It seems like each and every night, everyone is contributing and one player steps up to lead the team to victory. Tonight, the one was DeJuan Blair, who undoubtedly won the showdown against fellow power forward Kevin Love. Blair's final statline of 21 points, seven rebounds, and 8/12 shot from the field blew away Love's 16 points, six rebounds and one steal. In addition to winning the PF battle, San Antonio also excelled with their game in the paint: 52-40. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker dropped in 23 and 19 points, respectively, with Manu draining 2-of-2 bombs from 3-point territory and Parker finishing 6-of-13 from the floor, and nine assists, but six turnovers. Parker even acknowledged that the some bench players performed much better than the starters. (Read More ... )

Nice update. 2nd in the Southwest is pretty good. The Mavs seem to be on fire in this one. A bit surprising to see the Cs struggling that big.

Love the effort in that latest update.
Good month record wise too, on the pace for 58 wins.

Boston's record is kind of a surpsie, especially the home one of 4-4, since HCA is big in simulted games. On the console version, anyways.

Central is just fucked up, Cleveland leading the division at 10-7 and Detroit second place at 10-8? WTF :scold:

Lakers only being 4th seed is also retarded (N)

Ginobili carried the team on his shoulders and scored 6 unanswered points for a 102-101 lead with 58 seconds left; he finished with a season-high 27 points. A block by Tim Duncan on Monta Ellis gave the Spurs a chance for the win

nice spurt there at hte end to squeak by with the win vs my boyz of Oaktown (damn you  )... but overall a good month for you guys (Y)

a little OT, but when's Gino gonna either go shaved bald or get some hair transplants? watching SA last night vs. CHI, he looks absolutely ridiculous like he's wearing a white yarmulke on his head... doesn't his barber ever lift a mirror to the back of his head to show him what's going on back there? :?

NEW YORK, December 1 -- The Miami Heat's LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month presented by Sprite, respectively, for games played during October & November. For every point scored by the players on the month, Sprite will donate $10 to charity. This month Sprite will donate $4,270 on behalf of James (427 points) and $5,370 on behalf of Bryant (537 points). This philanthropic aspect builds on Sprite’s strong appeal to the nation’s best basketball players as an official partner of the NBA.

James is 9th in the league in scoring (23.7 ppg), while placing 4th among small forwards in rebounds (7.6 rpg), and 6.0 assists, 1.0 blocks (both best in Miami) and 2.3 steals per game to boot. He is leading the Heat to an NBA-best 15-3 record (.833%). Against the Phoenix Suns on November 17, James recorded his 2nd double-double of the season with 19 points, a season-high 17 rebounds and also 6 assists; three days later, on November 20, scored 22 points and 12 assists at Memphis against the Grizzlies; on November 24, 26 points and 12 rebounds against the Orlando Magic; November 27 at Dallas against the Mavericks, 34 points, 10 boards and 5 assists in a 55-point win, and closed the month with 30 points and 9 rebounds against Washington. James was also named Eastern Conference Player of the Week twice this month, in consecutive times, for games between November 14-20 and November 21-27.

Bryant is 2nd in the league in points per game with 29.8, while helping the Lakers to a Western Conference-4th best 12-6 record, overcoming a slow 5-4 start. He also leads the Lakers in assists (5.9 apg), steals (2.2 spg) and minutes (38.1 mpg) and is second in field goal percentage (.483%). Bryant recorded two double-doubles, including a 36-point, 14-assist night against Memphis on November 2, and 24 points and 10 dishes against the Chicago Bulls on November 23. On November 28, he recorded a season-high 43 points, six rebounds and six steals in a 112-90 win over the Indiana Pacers. Bryant also won Western Conference Player of the Week in the first week of the season (October 26-30). It's safe to say that Bryant is having his best season since 2006-07 in terms of stats.
