Sebastian Telfair wants Celtics to unretire #31

Boston Herald - Recently acquired point guard Sebastian Telfair wants to ask Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell to request that the Celtics unretire his jersey number 31.

Telfair has always worn the number because he’s from 31st Street in Brooklyn, but the number was retired by the Celtics in Maxwell's honor.

“I just got his phone number,” Telfair said. “I’m going to call him.”

What a moron.. that's quite possibly one of the most disrespectful things you could do. That's like JR Smith asking the Bulls to retire #23.

Wow, he's smart. Asking a Celtics legend to unretire a number just because he was from some stinking street address? He's gonna have a lot of hate mail.

Not quite. Jordan was the best.

Telfair hasn't even started 31 games in a season yet, so I think it is quite egotisitical of him to ask of Boston to unretire a number for him, especially since it is a sign of respect and sort of sacred to have a jersey retired in the rafters.

At least he has a good excuse "don't worry Ced, they won't retire MY 31 anyway so you'll still be the only one.."

I think he should just go with 30 (his reported summer league jersey number, which can be found here.) Shaq didnt get 32 with the Lakers, neither did Karl Malone, so why does he believe that he should be able to take a guys retired jersey number?

That certainly shows a lack of respect for Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, the MVP of the 1981 Finals.

It'll be funny if he just refuses to play if he can't get the number he wants and demands a trade. It will be just another Steve Francis.

Telfair's an idiot....for him to even ask that, is a lack of respect for the tradition of the game & its elders (N)

here's hoping Delonte & Rondo play all the minutes at PG in Beantown

I hope Cornbread tells him where to go. I can't take some of these young players. Sh!t, I don't think he'll even last in Boston.

Telfair's a legend in his own mind, just like his cousin "Starbury".
