Bird and Carlile see different Jasikevicius role

Tue May 16, 2006 11:04 pm

L. Bird in recent comments, said that Carlile doesn't use Jasikevicius. He said, that Jasikevicius IS NOT a shooting guard and shoudn't play that position. he also said, that he is trully much better than this season showed and deserves alot more playing time than he gets now. He also said that there will be many huge changes on the team, that the team played very selfishly and therefore Saras wasn't able to show his abilities. He said that things will be changes and he will make big changes this offseason. (i've only seen this interview in Lithuanian, I haven't saw the oriniginal english version).

Interesting. Rick Carlisle is a solid coach but he wont win this battle against Larry Bird.

I would love to see Sarunas get to strut his stuff much more than he was this season, and he is a great player and all, but I can't help but wonder if Larry is having a little too much confidence in him or if he actually does know what's better for the team. As Matthew said, Rick is a very good coach and I'm fairly sure there's a solid reason why he didn't play him as much and/or in his natural position. It's probably not because Sarunas isn't a good enough player, but Rick probably thinks the team is better off playing him like they have; and he might be right, which is why I'm not sure about Larry trying to force the issue too much.
It's a bit of a gamble; they could either continue to play like they have been and get good results in doing so. But they could also try to get Sarunas more into it all, which could go either way really. I'd go with the later (at least to start with, and you'll still be able to get back in case it doesn't work out), but it'll be real interesting to see how it'll pan out..

I'm on Larry's side. Totally. Saras is NO SG.

He's also no PG....he can't create for himself or anyone else. He should be a 3rd string PG on any good playoff team.

I don't think Carlisle should be forced to play him more.....this isn't some young guy with a shit load of potential we are talking about, this is a 30yr old with a future of 5yrs max.

Well I would say like this also, if I would have been seen only that, what he did on the NBA.
But he played a huge role in Europe.
Maybe the transition was too hard for him...

Maybe I should remind you the Olimpycs? Or his glorious seasons in Europe? He can score at any time, esspecially at clutch moments. He is also a great passer, he just doesn't like when he is forced to play static basketball, he is a creator. I'm sure Bird will do what is neccesary (fire Carlile, trade Tinsley and Johnson) to make his team like he wants it to be (O'neal;Stojakovic;Saras).

I disagree with Matt, that Jasikevicius is just 3 PT shooter, but not PG. He is creator, he loves to controll the ball. But I won't be biased and will say that he is just too weak for the starting point guard position at Indiana.

Well then I guess in Lithuanian they completely changed what Larry said to make Saras fans happy.

Larry actually said that he would be trying more to make attitude adjustments with the current players rather then have a massive overhaul. That doesn't mean what he is saying is true however. He certainly didn't say anything like this at all.

Maybe he(Gedas) said what he wanted to say?

Well, partly yes. It's hard to fid the specific word when your translating an interview from Lithuanian to English, when it was translated to Lithuanian in the first place. He did talk about Saras.

He's a very good passer but i don 't see him making opposing teams defense work hard to guard him and creating open opportunities for his teammates. Mainly other defenses kinda...just ignore him.

I think if he drills in some 30+ games he'll make the other teams sweat and extend the defenses a little bit. But right now, with a career high of 5 field goals, he's not on anybody's radar.
