I think what he was saying was that even though Malone and Ewing did wear 11 and 6, a lot of people will associate those players as 32 and 33, since those were the most illustrious days of their career, and the time they played in their final numbers weren't as impressive or worth remembering. Also since so many great players have worn or currently wear 32, 33, and 34, when people bring up those numbers every person thinks of a different great player with that number...
Kobe Bryant wore number 8 on the other hand, and when people think of the number 8, 99.9% would probably think of Kobe, because he is maybe the only of the league's 'great' players to have worn that number. It's a number etched into his legacy, just as number 23 is almost always associated with Jordan. Changing his number would be a big change because it's the most one of the most unique things about him as a player.
