Ben Wallace is overrated

He's not as good a on-ball defender as people make him out to be

well like i said, its really not worth arguing since anyone with half a brain knows than he is one of the best, if not the best, defenders in the league.

LMAO your a pistons fan and you don't even know your facts

I believe he still is a good man-defender but he isn't the absolute best which is what some people make him out to be. Rasheed Wallace is a beter man-defender than Ben Wallace trust me also He is quite possibly the worst offensive player in the NBA today

Ben Wallace has great recovery though and of course we all know is a tremendous shot blocker and has good rotation and rebounding skills.

you want facts? try 3 of the last 4 DPOTY awards

hell will have long frozen over before i trust you, and dont bring up his offensive capabilities to try and bring him down or support your arguement.

I gotta agree a little bit. If Ben Wallace wasn't known as a great defender, but he was at his same skill level, he would have won 0 DPOY's. But, Ben is still a TREMENDOUS defender

Now is as good a time as ever to mention this...

rongotai, why does your sig say 'dynasty in the valley' and have Amare of the Phoenix Suns? Phoenix is no valley. It's completely flat. The closest thing to a valley in Arizona is the Grand Canyon.

Ben Wallace is not the worst player in the league on offense as long as Michael Ruffin continues to play in the NBA.

That said, he is pretty bad. And as a result of that, slightly overrated.

His man defense is not best at his position (remember it was against Wallace that SAR got 50 a few years back), but is still top ten or top five. If he focused on his man defense he could probably be one of the three best in the league, but he can't. Why? Because he has to focus on the team defense, it's why adding Sheed took the Pistons from a good, but not great defensive team into one of the best ever back in 2004. Then Sheed could focus on taking Duncan, KG, etc. one-on-one, while Ben settled to take on entire opposing teams.

Wallace is "overrated" to an extent because he's useless on offense. He scores 5-6 points worse than an average player, so even though he's taking six points away from teams when he's on the court he's still only breaking even. People talk about Wallace as a franchise player, and some GMs say they'd take him over Tim Duncan. This is foolish, Duncan is easily one of the three best defensive players in the league along with Ben Wallace, but he also scores 20-25 points a game.

Billups has been the Pistons best player the last four years, but Wallace is the one everyone talks about because he's an oddity for a superstar in today's league. However, it is worth noting that in the Pistons system all the pieces are most valuable, they don't win without Billups (see 2003 for example) but they also couldn't win without Ben.

It's hard to explain how he's overrated. It's in the sense in that's he still really really good, but that he's not as good as people tend to make him seem. It's the reverse of McGrady a few years ago where he was underrated because people knew he was good, but they didn't know how great he really was.

I guess one could summarize as saying that Wallace was called underrated by the media for so long, that he's now actually kinda overrated.

not really...

benji wrote:That said, he is pretty bad. And as a result of that, slightly overrated.

his offence is by no means overated. Everyone knows he is shit in offence, all he is good for is a nice dunk or putback every now and then.

Wallace is "overrated" to an extent because he's useless on offense. He scores 5-6 points worse than an average player, so even though he's taking six points away from teams when he's on the court he's still only breaking even.

only taking 6points away? youve got to be kidding... the amount of times a player will get worried out of a shot simply because he is standing in the paint is uncanny (probly like 1-3 a game... but still ) and he doesnt score 5-6 points less than an average player. He scores about 1-2 points less. (He scores around 7-9 a game, average is 9-point-something)

People talk about Wallace as a franchise player, and some GMs say they'd take him over Tim Duncan. This is foolish, Duncan is easily one of the three best defensive players in the league along with Ben Wallace, but he also scores 20-25 points a game.

your right, it is foolish, but since when are we comparing Ben to Duncan? its just completely off the point.

Billups has been the Pistons best player the last four years, but Wallace is the one everyone talks about because he's an oddity for a superstar in today's league.

Ben may not be the best player, but he is the heart and sole of Detroit. Just read the post on here a month or two ago when the question was asked.

It's hard to explain how he's overrated. It's in the sense in that's he still really really good, but that he's not as good as people tend to make him seem.

i dont see how he is overated. From what I hear, it is that he is one of the best defenders in the league, has little to no offence and is the pilon of Detroit. This is all true.

maybe its because in Australia the only way I can hear about the NBA is from forums... no huge media coverage to judge whether or not he is overated, but from what I do read, it seems true.

So, as you can see questionswap is just full of kind individuals...

two people said he was overated, and one said he wasnt (though this was pretty much the only response that assumed some knowledge of what I was talking about)
