Just for comparison's sake (and to be a homer) Jordan's highest PER season was 31.7 and Wilt's was 32.1

Kobe's January was higher than the highest PER season of two of the greatest players of all time... and you want us to think about Kobe's being "slightly" above Yao's? lol, Dampier plays better off the bench for some odd reason. Diop is garbage but I think he is a better defender than Eric. Too bad Dallas is playign shit lately

Guards can shoot the 3 which usually bumps up the eFG and true FG (Not exactly for Yao since he shoots 84% from the line), they usually have a higher usage rate since they have the ball in their hands more and can jack up shots, should assist and steal more, etc. There're trade-offs to everything.

Not really... the assists get cancelled out by blocks for big men, most guards who shoot the 3, unless they're on fire, miss alot of them, which would have to reduce the eFG whatever that is... Yao's been jacking alot of shots too, since he's the only guy on that team who knows what a basketball is.

Anyways all of these bizarre questionable stats aside, he's probably been the best player in the league for the last 10-12 games. I don't know if it'll last, but it'll be quite impressive if it does.

eFG is basically FG % that takes 3 point shooting into consideration. For example, a big man who shoots 50% but shoots no 3's have an eFG of 50% while a guard who shoots 45% from the field and makes like 35% from 3 point would also have a 50% eFG. It's quite clever really. True FG takes free throw shooting into consideration as well.

Not really... the assists get cancelled out by blocks for big men

0.67 * assists = assist value
blocks * ValueOfPossession * leagueDRB% = block value

This means last season each block was worth .735 and each assist .67, you would say, they basically cancel each other out. But there were 4.3625 assists for every block last season.

Guards would also get a steal bonus (steal value = steals * VOP...or 1.031).

Every three pointer a player makes is a free extra point. The field goal part of PER looks like this:
3PM + (FGM * (2 - (team assisted %) * .586))) - (Missed FG * VOP * league DRB%)

I personally get more exacting and add team and individual context, not just league and team assisted %, but that takes more time to calculate and requires the 82games data, so I use the Hollinger PER method until the end of the season generally.

PER correlates with winning % to the tune of .85, I don't know of any stat aside from team point differential (and winning % itself) that correlates better than that. Big men are often the tops of PER (though not this season when it goes Wade-Kobe-LeBron at the top) but when have big men not been more dominant in the NBA? Isn't this what people always say? You need a big man, need size, etc. Then you (not you specifically Jae, but people in general) point to Jordan who breaks this rule, and what do you know, he leads the league in PER for seven straight years and finishes in the TOP TWO in every full year of his first ten...then fourth in his final Bulls season...

It's not questionable once you take a few minutes to stop being scared and take a look at it.
