(November 16, 2005) -- The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday they have signed free-agent guard Darrick Martin. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Martin is an NBA veteran as he has played 10 NBA seasons. (NBAE/Getty Images)

Martin, five-foot-11, 170 pounds has played 10 seasons in the NBA including time with Minnesota, Vancouver, Sacramento, Dallas, and most recently, the Los Angeles Clippers. In 11 games last season with the Clippers, he averaged 3.8 points, 2.5 assists and 17.3 minutes. He also played 30 games with the Michigan Mayhem of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) where he averaged 15.8 points, 7.1 assists and shot .917 from the free-throw line.

“We are pleased to welcome Darrick to our team,” expressed Raptors General Manager Rob Babcock. “He gives us insurance at the point guard position and will help develop our younger players.”

The UCLA grad owns career averages of 7.8 points, 3.2 assists and 11.9 minutes in 426 games. In 23 playoff games, he has averaged 4.0 points, 1.8 assists and 12.6 minutes. He netted a career-best 38 points December 30, 1996 versus Utah as a member of the Clippers. While with the Timberwolves, Martin recorded a personal best of 13 assists January 19, 1996 versus San Antonio. He enjoyed his best offensive season during the 1996-97 campaign when he averaged 10.9 points and 4.1 assists in 82 games.

The former Harlem Globetrotter was named MVP of the 2003 CBA playoffs, leading the Yakima Sun Kings to a league championship. Martin is expected to be in uniform tonight for the Raptors when they play host to the Philadelphia 76ers at Air Canada Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

It's rumored that Darrick Martin will shoot 100% from the floor all year.

[sarcasm]This will completely turn the Raptors season around and add much needed depth at PG.[/sarcasm]

But seriously, ehh whatever. I can't even feel sorry for this team anymore it's just become a frustration. But I'm happy since it's one less team to worry about in the Atlantic.

Alvin Williams right now has bone spurs and can't play for about a month, so Martin was brought in for point guard insurance and to help mentor Jose (I've heard that he can speak Spanish).

What about the big man we need? I understand we need a filler for Alvin, but I think we need a center more.

Right now, I don't really see any good big men in the free agent market.

I am STILL hoping that the Raptors will sign Marcus Haislip though. :P

That's the problem. I don't know how Babcock going to resolve that, but I'm betting on a blockbuster deal.

Haislip's good, I had him in my dynasty (Y)

I think Stromile Swift should start over Howard. If you're going to sign him as a free agent, you might as well put him to use. He's better than Howard anyway. Juwan is just a washed up power foward who can't play defence.
