I can't believe Kwame Brown made it over Boozer, Artest AND Kobe. That's crazy! Well I guess he lived up to his potential

Nice preview of the All-Star Weekend, though the league picks his replacement on the All-Star squad and the Western coach would name his replacement in the starting lineup. ;)

Dixon Not Clutch-enough to Finish Off Sixers

Los Angeles Lakers 97 @ Philadelphia 76ers 99

Feb 15, Philadelphia - PG Juan Dixon tried to match Allen Iverson's speed and quickness at the end of the game. He held Iverson down for the full ofurth quarter but just didn't come up big on the final three plays.

Dixon scored 5 of his 11 points in the final 3 minutes of regulation, assisted on 2 baskets that helped the Lakers get within reach of winning but missed his own potential game winning basket.

"Dang, I thought it was a good shot," Dixon said of his shot which was too flat and hit the front of the rim as time expired. He was visibly painned to see it miss its target as he walked offcourt beating his chest.

The Lakers who were immediately mesmerised by the Sixers' speed and fast breaking ability, fell behind right from the start. Allen Iverson led the charge with a flurry of quick jumpers and three point plays as the guard, who wasn't selected to play in the All-star game seemed to take his anger out on the Lakers starters. None of them had an answer to stopping him.

"AI was playing great basketball tonight," Boozer said of the former All-star starter, "It's a shame he was snubbed but he isn't in the best form he could be in."

Iverson hadn't missed a shot in the first 16 minutes of the game before taking a break on the Sixers' bench. Iverson finished with 28 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists and scored the last basket for the Sixers in the final period. Kenny Thomas had 12 points for the Sixers while Iguodala, McKie and CHan all scored 10 apiece.

Kareem Rush poured in his worst shooting performance of the season as he scored 20 points, but needed 31 shots to do so. He missfired on 6 long range attempts and 8 free throws. "This was a hard night shooting for me," Rush exclaimed, "Every three I took was wide open, but I wasn't shooting right. They were all a bit wide."

Newly announced All-star Kwame Brown and Rookie Fredrick Ratchuk both played less minutes on the eve of All-star weekend. Head Coach Magic Johnson explained, "We wanted to rest the two so they don't get injured in their events. It was good for the rest of the team as they had a chance to bond but ultimately, in the end we needed both guys to even get close to winning!"

Brown had a double double of 20 and 10 in only 28 minutes while Ratchuk was instrumental in the Lakers' comeback with 11 points and 4 assists in 27 minutes. Carlos Boozer chipped in 12 points and grabbed a game high 21 rebounds while rounding out his boxscore with 5 assists.

The Lakers' duo of Boozer and Brown made a spectacular play on only the second basket of the night. Boozer grabbed a rebound off a Kareem Rush miss and then passed in mid air to Kwame Brown who caught it for the alley-oop. However, everything went downhill from there as the lakers struggled to score and the Sixers pushed the pedal to the metal.

The Lakers did slowly make their way back into the game and courtesy to Ratchuk's 6 straight points igniting the Lakers 7 made shots in a row in the fourth quarter, the game was level.

Juan Dixon's jumper pulled his team within 3 of the Sixers with 3:07 left. With 2:45 left, the score edged a bit higher with Juan's free throw after being fouled hard and it took the Lakers up to 91-93. Iverson then missed two shots under the pressure and Ratchuk even made a mistake on the fast break before Juan Dixon once again made a beautiful play.

With 1:58 left o nthe clock, Dixon drove in on the right side and twisted around the huge body of rookie C Chan for a layup and tying the game at 93-93. Rookie Center Chin grabbed a McKie miss and scored with 1:47 left. Artest was then forced into a rushed shot as he returnd the favour by forcing Glenn Robinson into an airball.

With 1:04 remaining in the game, Fredrick Ratchuk scored a deep jumper from the sideline to level the score again at 95-95. A putback dunk by Chin put the Sixers up before Juan Dixon's misplaced pass led to Kenny Thomas' steal and assist to a streaking Allen Iverson on the fast break. Carlos boozer then quickly dunked with 28.5 seconds left before the Lakers failed to grab the rebound on the first Sixers miss. Chin grabbed another offensive rebound but missed what would have been the game sealing shot. Instead, the Lakers were given a chance to either win it or tie it but with only 0.9 seconds left in the game, Juan Dixon was forced to shoot a tough turnaround three over his defender.

"It's another tough loss for us," Brian Shaw said, "I hope the team will be mroe focussed after the All-star break."

NOTES:

The Lakers drop one game below 50% for away games record... PF Jared Randall, the Lakers' first round draft pick was able to have a career night finishing with 10 points and 8 rebounds. He didn't miss a shot... The Lakers are to play the NBA leading Detroit Pistons soon... The Scaramento Kings who are 13-6 are first i nthe Western Conference... Current Record: 12-6 (7-0, 5-6)

So Kupchak has replaced David Stern as the commish then? :P

Nice writeup of the Sixers game, shame about the loss. Boozer was a beast on the boards though, actually quite a nice all-around performance on his part. Rush was certainly trigger-happy with 31 attempts, 8 from beyond the arc...2/10 from the foul line though. How high do you have your free throw slider these days? Pretty realistic numbers for AI.

Have fun with the All-Star break. :)

Free throw is around 70... that + Rush's horrible free throw shooting rating = wat happened in the game.

Glad to say that Rush was benched for the full final quarter. Also agree that AI's stats were surprisingly realistic!

With ASW, the break will be ages cause i wont be playing for a while.. its time for a mid season break!

I'll see everyone in this thread in one week!

your offense must centre around the SG spot considering that Rush is now getting all Kobe's shots....

also, you could start Dixon....depends on what you want and need from your PG....IMHO, keep him on the bench for that 6th man spark....

Yeah... at least its more realistic with close losses and wins.. dont want a season of blowouts!

And, i agree- it seems i have a backcourt orientated offence...

I wouldn't really say backcourt-orientated, I'd say SG-orientated offense....but it makes sense for the Lakers to do that so (Y)

Feb 18, Las Vegas - The NBA made a landmark decision to allow the Casino-city of Las Vegas to hold all future NBA Weekends. The first ever Vegas All-Star weekend was kicked off by the Rookie-Sophomore game.

"This is a great advertising opportunity for the League," David Stern stated two weeks ago. LAst night he added, "Vega has wanted a team for a while and even though it can't be granted, we are glad that they are able to be involved in the NBA program."

Friday's game was started with rapper/producer Kanye West who performed two of his songs and Producing Label 'Rockafella' lending a hand by handing artists; Jay Z and Mase to help with the player introductions and PA annpuncements throughout the night.

The Sophomores and Rookies then took over from West and his Rockafella counterparts to put on a show for the crowd. The Rookie team was well balanced with five players scoring in double figures, kept the Sophs at bay before they finally allowed the second year players take over in the closing moments of the match.

The Rookie Team recieved an invaluable contribution from Nuggets SG Remus McCarty who top socred with 15 points off the bench. First Overall NBA pick, the Suns' PF Priest Askins felt snubbed by the team selectors for not getting a starting spot. He finished with 10, 8, 2 blocks and 1 steal.

"Askins surprised me and the coaching staff tonight," Rookies Coach Magic Johnson said, "I knew Phoenix got a good player but his inexperience didn't help him to be able to start for his team. Tonight he justified why he was picked first."

Sophomores Coach Mike D'Antoni who happens to be Askin's Head COach wasn't surprised with his rookie's performance, "Well, he was picked first and all. He's supposed to perform well." When asked whether the young forward would be allowed to play this season he replied, "He'll get his time. Soon, maybe I can start him at the Center position."

The Rookies were led by the backcourt trio of Spurs' SF Blaise Galand, Bobcats' SG Cothran Tyson and Lakers' PG Fredrick Ratchuk who all scored in double figures but all struggled against the Sophomore's interior defence. Surprise star Xavier Radwan was very efficient with 8 points (4-6 FG), 10 rebounds and an assist, steal and block.

Seattle's C Robert Swift was a monster in the third quarter as he scored 12 of his 16 points in that period. He finsihed on 16, 13, 2 blocks and a steal in 24 minutes of game time. Ben Gordon showed why he is known as Mr Fourth Quarter with an 11 point fourth quarter which helped his team pull away form the opposition en route to his 11, 5, 6 and 3 steal performance.

Chalotte's Emeka Okafor was awarded MVP with 12, 14, 6 and 5 blocks. However, Magic PF Dwight Howard felt he was snubbed as he finished on 24, 8, 3, 3 blocks and a steal. "I think I did more than Meka. He scored off my passes."

The game started off slowly as Howard dominated in the paint and the Rookies were ice cold. The game's pace evened itself up as both teams converted eye boggling plays. Xavier Radwan had a thunderous put back dunk before Chris Duhon sank a three then stole the ball to score another one from the baseline. Then Fredrick Ratchuk unleashed an amazing drive on his Sophomore defence.

Ratchuk recieved the ball at the top of the key and dribbled in and got up over his defenders to slam it home.

"It's amazing, I never knew someone like him could get so high," Adam Otter laughed hard after watching the replay of Ratchuk dunking over 7 footers Ramos and Swift.

The game was steady for much of the rest of the night with the Rookies coming back and tying the match at thrid quarter time. With Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor in foul trouble, they sat out the full third period but the fiurth quarter was the duo's time to shine. The second quarter was filled with blocks from left, right and center. One highlight was Okafor rejecting Cothran Tyson on the fastbreak, sending the ball into the stands.

Ben Gordon came off the bench to scored twice in the first minute of driving dunks and then helped his teammates score for the next 8 minutes before taking over at the end.

The Sophomores looked like they were in front comfortably with an 8 point advantage before Ratchuk scored three jumpshots and aided Xavier Radwan on two buckets and the game was close once more. This time, Ben Gordon stole the ball with 45 seconds left an assisted Dwight Howard on the fast break. Gordon was then fouled on his next three shots but was cold by missing 4 of his free throw attempts. Luckily, Okafor was there to grab the offensive rebound and finished the rookies off with two dunks.

"It was a team effort," Ben Gordon stated, "Our big men were the key to our victory."

I knew 'Meka would take it... Just knew it. :D 87-80? Isn't that a pretty low scoring game for a rookie-sophomore game? Did you play shortened minutes or something?

West....I always have a policy that you play with the team that you have someone elected with....

example 1, Brown plays for West, you play as West....
example 2, you have no representatives, play 1 half for East and 1 half for West....
example 3, you have 1 representative for the Rookies and 1 representative for the Sophomores, play 1 half for Rookies and 1 half for West....

thank you, come again

NOTES:

Some observations from the Rookie-Sophomore Game:

- Dwight Howard wasn't happy with Emeka Okafor winning the MVP
- Lakers Head Coach Magic Johnson who coached the rookies seemed to give his own rookie Fredrick Ratchuk a lot of leeway tonight
- Suns Head Coach Mike D'Antonio had a review of his squad and will probably start his rookie Priest Askins after the All-star break. Only at the expense of Quentin Richardson or Joe Johnson
- Ben Gordon didn't miss a shot in his 11 point 4th quarter
- Remus McCarty proved that he is one of the best shooters in the NBA
- The Sophomore defence was tough to crack, Ratchuk dunked on it twice
- Robert Swift dominated inside the paint in the third period
- Xavier Radwan is grossly underrated. The second rounder has earned props from many critics
- Cothran Tyson stated that playing for the Bobcats has been the best thing that's happened for his basketball career

OTHER NEWS:

Minnesota's PF Kevin Garnett won the NBA SLam Dunk contest with a surprising reverse jam last night as he beat out last year's champion LeBron James to the top spot honours. Miami's SG Eddie Jones continued his career revival by taking out the three point shootout crown as he finished with a score of 29 and edged out a gutsy effort by rookie Remus McCarty's 27.

ABOVE: Carmelo Anthony, DEN was last year's Rookie Game MVP and has added All-Star MVP to his trophy cabinet

Feb 20, Las Vegas - The All-Star Game completed the first ever Las Vegas All-Star Weekend and also allowed David Stern to open the newest addition to the NBA; the All-Star Arena. The million dollar investment which will be the home of all future All-Star Weekends was opened by the NBA Commish and Michael Jordan.

Jordan stayed at the game as an assistant coach for the Eastern Conference team and shared duties with Pistons coach Larry Brown. Jordan was impressed with the development of basketball, "When I left, I knew I was handing the game into the good hands of the young guys who play this game. Carmelo (Anthony) has really impressed me tonight!"

Carmelo Anthony was crowned All-Star MVP with his 25, 4, 4 and 5 steal performance from off the bench. Michael Jordan's footwear sponered Carmelo debuted with a stunning performance. Anthony was unstoppable on the drive and sank his fair ammount of jumpshots including a Jordan-esque fadeaway over Eddie Jones late in the final period.

"Carmelo has great potential. The kid is brilliant. A shame that LeBron wasn't here to duel with him!" the opposition's Michael Redd analysed. LeBorn James was indeed in the crowd and watched the game with an itch to play. "I really want to go on!" he had said during a Western Conference timeout.

All-Star Centers Shaquille O'Neal and Yao Ming had a battle of their own. Yao winning the team battle while SHaq won the individual one. Yao showed that he had improved a lot since their last meeting and may be on the way to becoming the most dominant player in the NBA.

Shaq was impressed with Yao's 18, 10 and 2 block performance, "He's not there yet but he is getting there. Maybe two more years but by that time I will be gone. No more posters for me!"

Yao was grateful to have played against Shaq again, "It is always an honour to play Shaq." Shaquille finished with 22, 13 and 2 blocks but dominated on 10 for 13 from the field.

Stephon Marbury was the other story of the night with an outstanding effort of 39 points on 14-19 from the field, 2-4 from three point range and 9-13 from the charity stirpe. He led the team well in the fourth quarter in a failed comeback attempt as he registered 16, 3 and 4. “After last year, I made sure I had my own drink bottle,” Marbury joked.

Last All-Star Weekend, Marbury had a DNP due to a stomach virus after he claimed Hip Hop artist Nelly spiked his drink. The New York PG still receives taunts about the subject. “I played well and the team won. That’s all that matters!”

The Eastern Conference Team was filled with teammates as two duo and two trios formed the team. The Western All-Stars had three duos, nearly as impressive as their counterparts.

The Knicks’ duo of Tim Thomas and Stephon Marbury kept the game rolling as the two were tough to be beat on the fast break. Miami provided their own All-Stars Shaquille O’Neal, Dywane Wade and Eddie Jones. Shaq was his usual self while Wade played the role of super sub. Jones continued his brilliance with his selection and ended the night with 4 points. Pistons’ Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and Rip Hamilton were important in the team’s final comeback attempt as all three graced the floor alongside Shaq and Marbury to fuel a huge fourth quarter. The Bucks' Keith Van Horn and Michael Redd rounded out the list of duos/trios in the All-Star Team.

Yao Ming and Tracy Macgrady combined for 38 points in 25 and 22 minutes respectively. The duo unfortunately was never oncourt at the same until the final few minutes of regulation. “I feel that Pop didn’t utilize us as great as he could,” Macgrady stated.

West Debutant Jason Terry wasn’t too much of a factor in the win and the same applies for his German teammate Dirk Nowitzki. Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis of Seattle started the game as Ray went on to dominate in the third quarter. Rashard was disappointing in his debut All-Star game. The game featured 7 debutants.

The game started off well for the West as Macgrady came off the bench to score 14 points including back to back threes which snapped a deadlocked score and ignited a West 11-0 run. Shaq and Marbury shouldered their team’s scoring load scoring 10 apiece in the first quarter.

The second quarter was played very slowly by the West as Coach Gregg Popovich allowed his substitutes to play. Carmelo and Mike Dunleavy Jr. were playing horribly and allowed the East to slowly edge closer and eventually tying the game. Marbury once again led the charge with 9 points in the quarter.

Wade wowed the crowd with a massive dunk over Yao Ming in the middle of the second quarter. Marbury than stole the ball off a pass and sent an alley-oop pass to Shaq. The two plays turned around an early 15 point deficit but the West silenced their opponents in the third quarter, inflating their advantage to 20 again.

Kevin Garnett dominated in the paint with 10 points and Ray Allen had 2 minutes of glory. Allen stole an inbounds pass and scored a finger roll before scoring three more buckets in a row as he finished his individual 8-0 run. Wade was dynamite as he scored a three and four free throws finishing the quarter without a missed shot.

The West took over the game in a commanding position but the East All-Stars weren’t going to give up without a fight. Marbury’s 16, 3, 4 and Shaq’s 8 and 5 helped the East get within 8 with 6:47 left but Carmelo scored 10 of his 19 second half points while Yao countered Shaq with 8 points of his own.

“Carmelo carried his teammates on his back tonight,” Michael Jordan said, “He is doing well. The fans in Denver are getting someone they can call their franchise player.”
