Feb 20, Las Vegas - The All-Star Game completed the first ever Las Vegas All-Star Weekend and also allowed David Stern to open the newest addition to the NBA; the All-Star Arena. The million dollar investment which will be the home of all future All-Star Weekends was opened by the NBA Commish and Michael Jordan.
Jordan stayed at the game as an assistant coach for the Eastern Conference team and shared duties with Pistons coach Larry Brown. Jordan was impressed with the development of basketball, "When I left, I knew I was handing the game into the good hands of the young guys who play this game. Carmelo (Anthony) has really impressed me tonight!"
Carmelo Anthony was crowned All-Star MVP with his 25, 4, 4 and 5 steal performance from off the bench. Michael Jordan's footwear sponered Carmelo debuted with a stunning performance. Anthony was unstoppable on the drive and sank his fair ammount of jumpshots including a Jordan-esque fadeaway over Eddie Jones late in the final period.
"Carmelo has great potential. The kid is brilliant. A shame that LeBron wasn't here to duel with him!" the opposition's Michael Redd analysed. LeBorn James was indeed in the crowd and watched the game with an itch to play. "I really want to go on!" he had said during a Western Conference timeout.
All-Star Centers Shaquille O'Neal and Yao Ming had a battle of their own. Yao winning the team battle while SHaq won the individual one. Yao showed that he had improved a lot since their last meeting and may be on the way to becoming the most dominant player in the NBA.
Shaq was impressed with Yao's 18, 10 and 2 block performance, "He's not there yet but he is getting there. Maybe two more years but by that time I will be gone. No more posters for me!"
Yao was grateful to have played against Shaq again, "It is always an honour to play Shaq." Shaquille finished with 22, 13 and 2 blocks but dominated on 10 for 13 from the field.
Stephon Marbury was the other story of the night with an outstanding effort of 39 points on 14-19 from the field, 2-4 from three point range and 9-13 from the charity stirpe. He led the team well in the fourth quarter in a failed comeback attempt as he registered 16, 3 and 4. “After last year, I made sure I had my own drink bottle,” Marbury joked.
Last All-Star Weekend, Marbury had a DNP due to a stomach virus after he claimed Hip Hop artist Nelly spiked his drink. The New York PG still receives taunts about the subject. “I played well and the team won. That’s all that matters!”
The Eastern Conference Team was filled with teammates as two duo and two trios formed the team. The Western All-Stars had three duos, nearly as impressive as their counterparts.
The Knicks’ duo of Tim Thomas and Stephon Marbury kept the game rolling as the two were tough to be beat on the fast break. Miami provided their own All-Stars Shaquille O’Neal, Dywane Wade and Eddie Jones. Shaq was his usual self while Wade played the role of super sub. Jones continued his brilliance with his selection and ended the night with 4 points. Pistons’ Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and Rip Hamilton were important in the team’s final comeback attempt as all three graced the floor alongside Shaq and Marbury to fuel a huge fourth quarter. The Bucks' Keith Van Horn and Michael Redd rounded out the list of duos/trios in the All-Star Team.
Yao Ming and Tracy Macgrady combined for 38 points in 25 and 22 minutes respectively. The duo unfortunately was never oncourt at the same until the final few minutes of regulation. “I feel that Pop didn’t utilize us as great as he could,” Macgrady stated.
West Debutant Jason Terry wasn’t too much of a factor in the win and the same applies for his German teammate Dirk Nowitzki. Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis of Seattle started the game as Ray went on to dominate in the third quarter. Rashard was disappointing in his debut All-Star game. The game featured 7 debutants.
The game started off well for the West as Macgrady came off the bench to score 14 points including back to back threes which snapped a deadlocked score and ignited a West 11-0 run. Shaq and Marbury shouldered their team’s scoring load scoring 10 apiece in the first quarter.
The second quarter was played very slowly by the West as Coach Gregg Popovich allowed his substitutes to play. Carmelo and Mike Dunleavy Jr. were playing horribly and allowed the East to slowly edge closer and eventually tying the game. Marbury once again led the charge with 9 points in the quarter.
Wade wowed the crowd with a massive dunk over Yao Ming in the middle of the second quarter. Marbury than stole the ball off a pass and sent an alley-oop pass to Shaq. The two plays turned around an early 15 point deficit but the West silenced their opponents in the third quarter, inflating their advantage to 20 again.
Kevin Garnett dominated in the paint with 10 points and Ray Allen had 2 minutes of glory. Allen stole an inbounds pass and scored a finger roll before scoring three more buckets in a row as he finished his individual 8-0 run. Wade was dynamite as he scored a three and four free throws finishing the quarter without a missed shot.
The West took over the game in a commanding position but the East All-Stars weren’t going to give up without a fight. Marbury’s 16, 3, 4 and Shaq’s 8 and 5 helped the East get within 8 with 6:47 left but Carmelo scored 10 of his 19 second half points while Yao countered Shaq with 8 points of his own.
“Carmelo carried his teammates on his back tonight,” Michael Jordan said, “He is doing well. The fans in Denver are getting someone they can call their franchise player.”
