Classic NBA Video and Discussion Thread

Postby Dee4Three on Sun Oct 29, 2017 2:49 am

Hi all,

I thought it would be cool to have a thread for videos and discussion of the classic NBA.

Let's start this off with Vince Carters 50 point game against Iversons 76ers in the 2001 ECSF. He hits 8 threes in the first half here, thought for sure he would set a record that couldn't be caught with that pace. Hell of a game by Vince.

Good idea to have a topic for some retro talk from time to time. (Y)

There are quite a few YouTube channels posting old games, highlights, and in some cases, a few rarities. You can even find old episodes of NBA Action, with Jim Fagan!

Speaking of the channel that's from, In All Airness, Adam's got a great podcast as well.

For me, classic is the late 60s & 70s...

IMO, still the greatest playoff game in NBA history.

Andrew... how awesome is that? They should bring that show back... with the same voice... gets me really pumped up.

Jeffx, "Classic" as in past NBA. I could have said "Retro", wasn't sure which word to use. I consider classic as happenings in the NBA that are not recent.

But yes, that game was amazing. I've watched it a few times on youtube.

How about Jordan's 50 point timeline? Maybe the best video I have ever seen.

NBA Action is still running, but it hasn't been the same without Jim Fagan (who sadly passed away earlier this year). I guess it's also become a bit redundant with up-to-the-minute news and highlights online. Back in the 90s though, that was how you caught up on news and highlights, especially if you lived outside the US. Good times!

I'll have to sit down and enjoy that video when I get a moment. (Y)

Grant Hill, he could literally do it all. Might have the quickest first step as a SF in NBA History.

Yeah, they never were able to put in super successful seasons. Hills last two years before injury they made the playoffs, but were dispatched in the first round.

They never really had good teams, however adding Stackhouse made them more formidable in the late 90's.

Hills injury happened when he was 27, just about the enter his prime, it's sad really.

I still like that Pistons jersey and logo. The teal admittedly is a strange choice, but the blue and red version of the "horsepower logo" looked pretty good. They could've run with that a little longer.

Christmas present from my brothers: Authentic red 83-84 Portland TrailBlazers Clyde Drexler road jersey.

These early/mid 80's Blazers teams (and jerseys) are some of my favorite of all time.

Awesome present! When I think of Blazers retros, I tend to think of the ones from the late 80s onwards, but that's a good one.

Funny enough, their first year with those jerseys they raced out to a 43-14 record including a 20-4 start where they were a game behind the Bulls (the one they lost to the Bulls) for most of it... before finishing 11-14 over the last 25 games and losing in the first round.
Andrew wrote:I still like that Pistons jersey and logo. The teal admittedly is a strange choice, but the blue and red version of the "horsepower logo" looked pretty good. They could've run with that a little longer.

That version actually was the teams "official logo" during both Carlisle and Finals runs years, so one year shorter than the teal version. They just didn't keep it at center court or seemingly use it anywhere. I think the secondary version was on the baseline for a bit.

Teal and dark purple crept into a lot of jerseys in the mid-1990s because they were the hott color of the era and the Hornets did mad merchandise sales, that's why both the Grizzlies and Raptors went with essentially those colors. And the Jazz emphasized it. The other trend of the era was "movement" in the logos, thus the Rockets.

I remember an ESPN article where they had fashion and branding people critique the new uniforms and logos for the 1996-97 season along with recent and upcoming changes like the expansion teams. Mainly because the article was salivating over the Pistons jerseys/logo along with the Jazz's new river through the mountain logo (though less so with the jerseys). The one thing they all agreed on was that the Timberwolves had made terrible choices that they'd go back on. They wound up keeping them until KG left and the immediate replacements were only updated versions of them until this years drastic change. Other than the Celtics/Lakers/Bulls I doubt any other teams went for over ten years without changing their jerseys in that span, maybe any recent ten years. Unless you maybe count the Blazers, Spurs and Knicks keeping their general concept while tweaking the collars, etc. I guess the Heat would be close wouldn't they. Only had two jerseys in their entire history.

I guess in theory the Thunder have only had one jersey.

In all of those instances I'm not counting the hundred thousand variants that got worn on special occasions or for a season or whatever.

I always liked that Timberwolves logo and the jerseys from that era as well. I remember reading praise for them back in the day, though obviously they weren't universally liked and acclaimed.

Those are nice as well.

I think I'm kind of partial to the jerseys from when Drexler was playing, as I loved those teams and he is one of my favorites all time (and, he is underappreciated and underrated now).

I think the refs kept the game closer than game actually was supposed to be. Great game nonetheless. Still, fuq both the Dirtics and Fakers. :cheeky:

Exactly. Same thing applies to judging who's the GOAT. Younger fans think it's Jordan, I think it's Wilt, my father goes with Oscar. It's all subjective.

My top 15 -
Wilt
Jordan
Oscar
Russell
Kareem
Magic
Bird
West
LeBron
Duncan
Hakeem
Shaq
Havlicek
Kobe

Not super classic, but still close to 4 years ago.

Melo goes off. Funny to see the defenders legs shaking when he has them in the torture chamber. There is a reason that Pierce said he was the hardest player he ever had to defend.

Yeah, but those young cats who would put LeBron at #1 have no knowledge of NBA history.

Look at Dee's list - we can agree to disagree about the GOAT, but I can tell the dude knows his stuff. For me, any top 10-15 list without the three great centers (Wilt, Russell, Kareem) plus Oscar & West isn't legit.

As for Rick Barry, people don't realize how great he was because he was suck a jerk. I remember this quote about Barry from an NBA Lifer - "the only difference between Rick Barry and Larry Bird is people liked Larry Bird". And of course, I still remember his "watermelon grin" comment to Bill Russell.

I'm so glad he's gone from the Knicks.....one of the most overrated stars I've ever seen in the NBA. Not a leader at all. I feel like slapping these Knick fans on social media who consider him an all-time Knick. He's not in the same universe with Clyde, Willis, Pearl, Patrick & Bernard.

About LeBron and MJ the GOAT discussion, you can quote mine ;)
Today, most of Lebron's opponent call him the best player in the world. When MJ was in NBA, most of his opponents call him the GOAT, and many current NBA players still do today .

But theses lists, theses tops 10/15/25/50 are so personnal.

About MJ - but not only - you should check this YT channel guys : https://www.youtube.com/user/wistiti93420/videos

His dunk on Mourning where he is suspended in the air is my favorite.

Shawn Kemp, Dominique Wilkins, Doctor J, MJ are not too far, but you're right, VC is the best dunker of all time, in game and in all star dunk contest.

I still remember the foolish french commentators of french national public TV

I love the dunkers who do it with power and athleticism, like Nique. I found a really intense game between the Bulls and Hawks, you might find it entertaining. Nique is literally holding up his fist/pumping his fist on almost every basket he scores. So intense, regular season game. I guess the Hawks really wanted this one.

Check out Jordans off balance/double clutch shots, and his rolling hook down the middle of the lane. So good.

The fact that Reggie Miller is on the top 50 of all time list over Nique is really insulting, in my opinion. Nique was a better player by far in my opinion.

Barkley led Suns were good but not great imho in terms of historical Finalists quality. Where would you guys rank them in Finals opponents that Bulls faced in Jordan's era?

I would vote them in this order.

1. Malone/Stockton Jazz
2. Drexlers Blazers
3. Barkley's Suns
4. Magics Lakers
5. Kemp/Paytons SuperSonics

Jordan said his toughest opponent was the Jazz, so hard to argue with that. That Blazers series was something else, and the Blazers gave one of the games away in my opinion.

Would have been amazing to see him, Pippen and Rodman face off against Drexler, Barkley and Olajuwon in the 1997 finals. I'm still upset that it didn't happen.

I'd probably go...

1. Jazz
2. Trail Blazers
3. Suns
4. SuperSonics
5. Lakers

The '93 Suns were pretty deep, but I feel like they may have overachieved a little. The Jazz were back to back Finalists, and that Blazers team made two Finals in three years. That Sonics team was pretty damn good, and if they'd been able to stay together, might've eventually found success. The Lakers, while still great, were at the end of their run.

Jazz
Blazers
tie Sonics-Suns
distant last Lakers

97 Jazz was tops. matchup wise, i thought Prime Kemp and Payton surrounded by shooting had a great chance. Really Rodman came up big in that series.

Were the Blazers really that good? Outside of Clyde, did they have another superstar of the time like Kemp, Stockton, or so?

The Glide was the only superstar, but they had some really good players around him, for quite a deep team that arguably played better than the sum of their parts.

Kevin Duckworth and Terry Porter were both all-stars in 90-91 and 92-93, and Kersey should have been an all star in his career. Having Buck Williams at the 4 didn't hurt either. Cliff Robinson. Was an all star two years later, and Buck Williams himself was a 3 time all star.

One superstar, but multiple all star caliber players.

They have the full games from the finals available to watch on youtube, and a 4 or 5 part documentary on that season. Go have a look, when you watch them play you can see why they were an elite team at the time. You can watch them yourself and form your own opinion, nice that we have that option.

High octane offense, physical defense, team basketball.

Couldn't you say the Sonics had a deeper roster with more star quality guys on top of better regular season record?

IMO, you overrate a little bit the Sonics : they were less experienced, Payton recovered from injury and Rodman was amazing.

I also think that the Lakers are underrated ; Magic was only 31, Scott Worthy and Perkins 29, AC Green 27, Divac and Campbell 22.
A good compromise between experience and youth But Worthy got hurt in WCF and B.Scott disappeared during the finals.

The SuperSonics were a solid, all around team. But they were missing that superstar (Like Drexler).

They lacked a one on one scorer, Payton could do some things, but he wasn't a guy who could get a basket whenever you needed one. I would also venture to say that Porter was close to as good as Payton in 91-92. 19 and 7 for Payton, 18 and 5 for Porter, and while Porter didn't put up the same steals numbers, he was more than a capable defender. The physical brand of basketball played by the likes of Buck Williams and Jerome Kersey also separates them as far as the starting 5 goes.

Kind of like the 08-09 and 09-10 Lakers, they had the Superstar (Kobe), and a couple all stars/former all stars. But they had that elite player who was elite on both sides of the ball.

I put Magic and the Lakers ahead of the SuperSonics, because they were still primed (A lot of those guys), and Magic was still as good as ever. He won the MVP the previous season. I still think Magic and company put more of a fear into the Bulls, but of course that's just my opinion.

People really underrate Drexler (Example leaving him out of the top 50), he was elite on offense and on defense.

Here is the "Yearbook" videos from that season. Pretty fun to watch.

i thought so. that finals was 2 years coming. the Lakers pulled off a bigtime upset the previous year. they had some good pieces. Buck Williams was uber efficient. Kersey was this man child who could overpower Pip. Drexler making mj play defense a whole game (lol) and even a spry uncle cliffy off the bench

Terry Porter was a badass. Maybe if Portland had another playmaker or someone to settle down the offense, they win. I can remember the Blazers taking bad shots in key stretches...

NovU wrote:Couldn't you say the Sonics had a deeper roster with more star quality guys on top of better regular season record?

i dont know if it was deeper. frank brickowski and Ervin Johnson were playing center (lol). their money lineup of Perkins, kemp, detlef, hawkins, payton was pretty damn good though.

honestly even the 98 pacers i'd rank ahead of the 91 lakers. lakers put up a good fight early on but when the injuries hit, they got rolled. the bulls pacers conf finals is prolly the only series where i thought the bulls had a legit chance to lose.
