Cardinal to Memphis for 39 Million.

Free agent forward Brian Cardinal agreed to a contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPN Insider Chad Ford.

The contract is for six years and worth roughly $39 million, according to Bartelstein. The Grizzlies used their full mid-level exception to sign Cardinal.

Cardinal had a breakout year for the Warriors last year, averaging 9.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting a red-hot 44 percent from 3-point range. He's a tough-nosed, energetic player who should be perfect in Hubie Brown's system.

Several teams, most notably the Bulls, also were in the running for Cardinal.

"He's going to be a perfect fit in Memphis," Bartelstein told Insider. "I think Brian recognized that the Grizzlies were a team where he'd maximize his potential."

Didn't expect that from West. :?

You must mean custodian :P.

Remember what happened to James Posey last year? Everyone was shouting overpaid, overpaid. I don't think Cardinal will fare nearly as well as Posey though, and this type of deal seems to be the norm this offseason...there is no tomorrow!!

I know that Brian Cardinal is a little underrated at times and he had a pretty good year coming off the bench for the Warriors, but at that price I'd say they can afford to lose him.

I saw this guy here in DC..39 FREAKING Million??

You know, the last time these types of contracts were happening we had a lockout the following offseason. I think that's where we are headed now.

lol that guy was a reserve scrub with the Wizards but he did have a breakout season last year. That doesn't mean he's worth 39 million though.

It's all part of the infatuation with potential though. Even though Brian Cardinal had a breakout year by his own standards, it was the first time in his NBA career he played more than 10 minutes per game. It seems he could be a solid scorer off the bench (9.6 ppg in about 21 mpg), but I wouldn't be offering him that kind of money until he showed greater production across the board.

I can't believe the kind of money that these "Role Players" are getting.

I know they are good at what they do and all but come on.
