Idea for determining the ratings of retired legends

Ratings for general players or legends from a specific year team will obviously be based on his performance in that year,
like for Jordan in the 1998 bulls team, we will tweak his ratings to fit his play in 97-98.

But for players in all decade teams or all time teams,
how do you guys determine their ratings?

I mean we can still choose a specific year but I think it's more interesting to select the best attributes from their overall careers.
Like for Jordan on an all-decade team, we can pick out its athleticism from his early years, clutch play and shooting in his mid 30s, etc.
Wilt's passing ability late in his career with his amazing vertical and speed early in his career, etc.

This "idea" is totally not new but I just wanna see how you guys think about it.

do you know who will remake the all-decade legends this year?
let's hope they make the ratings by the "entire career" method.
well obviously we can adjust the ratings ourselves, but I hope some knowledgable patcher can make accurate ones for us, especially for 50s or 60s legends.

I highly recomend either each player's best season per decade or five seasons based on decade.
The reason for the latter is that many earlier players barely played ten seasons, and some major players split decades. For example, an 80's Jordan should only take into account his stats from '84-'85 to '89-'90 after that it would be a 90's Jordan, would it not?.
The reason for the former is that many players that split decades would be saddled with low stats due to either their rookie seasons or injury prone later seasons. For example, an 80's Jordan would be stuck with that second season where he only played 18 games, and a 90's Jordan would probably be stuck with '94-'95 when he played 17. Plus, there was a signifigant difference in both size and playstyle between pre-baseball Jordan(3 seasons)and post-baseball Jordan(3 1/4 seasons). A 2000's Jordan would only have two seasons to draw on without dipping into 90's Jordan.

[edited to add:] the above is only if ratings are based on the players regular season stats, if ratings are based on all-star game stats that is another headache altogether.

Ps. I don't know if I'm going to do anything with it myself this year, but last year I was toying around with the decade teams. I got realy bored one day and calculated the(arguable)best all-stars of the 80's and 90's, based on appearances, all-star MVP awards, and the top scorers. Other than the perenials(jordan, zeke, bird, magic, kareem, dr. j, etc)there were some interesting rankings. If anyone wants that list, just ask.

When I did the 80's All-Star teams I changed the scoring system slightly, but don't recall how. This change had very litle to do with the outcome, but the middle players get a little more credit.
