Idea for determining the ratings of retired legends

Wed Nov 24, 2010 10:01 pm

Ratings for general players or legends from a specific year team will obviously be based on his performance in that year,
like for Jordan in the 1998 bulls team, we will tweak his ratings to fit his play in 97-98.

But for players in all decade teams or all time teams,
how do you guys determine their ratings?

I mean we can still choose a specific year but I think it's more interesting to select the best attributes from their overall careers.
Like for Jordan on an all-decade team, we can pick out its athleticism from his early years, clutch play and shooting in his mid 30s, etc.
Wilt's passing ability late in his career with his amazing vertical and speed early in his career, etc.

This "idea" is totally not new but I just wanna see how you guys think about it.

Seven year peak.

Or five, maybe the decade. I go with seven because that was the length of Wilt and Jordan's (and some others) peaks as players.

do you know who will remake the all-decade legends this year?
let's hope they make the ratings by the "entire career" method.
well obviously we can adjust the ratings ourselves, but I hope some knowledgable patcher can make accurate ones for us, especially for 50s or 60s legends.

I highly recomend either each player's best season per decade or five seasons based on decade.
The reason for the latter is that many earlier players barely played ten seasons, and some major players split decades. For example, an 80's Jordan should only take into account his stats from '84-'85 to '89-'90 after that it would be a 90's Jordan, would it not?.
The reason for the former is that many players that split decades would be saddled with low stats due to either their rookie seasons or injury prone later seasons. For example, an 80's Jordan would be stuck with that second season where he only played 18 games, and a 90's Jordan would probably be stuck with '94-'95 when he played 17. Plus, there was a signifigant difference in both size and playstyle between pre-baseball Jordan(3 seasons)and post-baseball Jordan(3 1/4 seasons). A 2000's Jordan would only have two seasons to draw on without dipping into 90's Jordan.

[edited to add:] the above is only if ratings are based on the players regular season stats, if ratings are based on all-star game stats that is another headache altogether.

Ps. I don't know if I'm going to do anything with it myself this year, but last year I was toying around with the decade teams. I got realy bored one day and calculated the(arguable)best all-stars of the 80's and 90's, based on appearances, all-star MVP awards, and the top scorers. Other than the perenials(jordan, zeke, bird, magic, kareem, dr. j, etc)there were some interesting rankings. If anyone wants that list, just ask.

So putting Barkley on the West because he had more appearances here, and moving all of Shaq's point to the East(i'll explain that later) the 90's West team is:

Starters:
C David Robinson
PF Karl Malone
SF Charles Barkley
SG Mitch Richmond
PG John Stockton

Bench: Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Shawn Kemp, Clyde Drexler, Gary Payton, Tim Hardaway, Eddie Jones
Alternates: Chris Mullin, Dikembe Mutombo

Note: The 90's West doesn't have an actual SF except for alternate Chris Mullin, But watching All-Star games from the 90's(thx nbatv and espn classics)Barkley and Kemp usualy started with Malone, and Drexler, Magic and Richmond all played minutes there.

Re: Idea for determining the ratings of retired legends

As Ewing and Shaq dominated the center position for the East, i threw all of Shaq's points here, so the East wouldn't be without him.
So the 90's East are:

Starters:
C Patrick Ewing
PF Grant Hill
SF Scottie Pippen
SG Michael Jordan
PG Penny Hardaway

Bench: Shaquile O'Neal, Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Reggie Miller, Dominique Wilkins, Glen Rice, Alonzo Mourning
Alternates: Mark Price, Vin Baker

Note: With Barkley gone to the West, the 90's East has only Vin Baker as a PF. Grant Hill Started with Pippen during his appearances, Wilkins and Mourning often played that position.

When I did the 80's All-Star teams I changed the scoring system slightly, but don't recall how. This change had very litle to do with the outcome, but the middle players get a little more credit.
Points for the 80's East are:

20 Points:
Isiah Thomas

17 Points:
Larry Bird

16 Points:
Dr. J.

15 Points:
Moses Malone(12 east, 3 west)

Re: Idea for determining the ratings of retired legends

Hakeem Olajuwon dropped the H from his name for most of the 80's. I list him here without it.
The 80's West team is:

Starters:
C Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
PF Jack Sikma
SF Alex English
SG George Gervin
PG Magic Johnson

Bench: Akeem Olajuwon, Adrian Dantley, Rolando Blackman, Walter Davis, James Worthy, Clyde Drexler, Tom Chambers
Alternates: Dennis Johnson, Ralph Sampson

Notes: With Magic being so dominant, there is no backup PG for this team. Blackman, Drexler, and DJ all played minutes at this position.
Jack Sikma usualy started as a C, but often played PF.
