Discussion Thread for the Philippine Basketball Association

Since there seems to be a sizeable Filipino community here at NLSC why not have a thread for the PBA.

Although PLEASE KEEP THE DISCUSSION IN ENGLISH. Since unfortunately I'm a bit rusty with my Tagalog. :p And also so others who are not familiar with the PBA might be interested in joining in the discussion.

Peace out.

I only used to watch the games on TV and I havent gone to a regular PBA game since 1999 (about the time I started studying and working Down Under so Im only home in the Phils for a few months) so I decided to go to the opening of the quarter finals at the Araneta Coliseum, Wooohooo! I'm glad I did ,the TnT - Barako game was great.

Second game was even better, since Im a Ginebra fan ehehe. Its good to see the Kings with a healthy lineup and a good import. (although the series was tied last friday :D )

Although much as I want the Kings in the Finals Im betting that the Reinforced Conference champions will come from the TnT-Barako series, although San Miguel seems to be peaking at the right moment so they might be a good bet.

I'll be going to knock out games later tonight, Go Ginebra! Ginebra! ehehehe. But even if we do enter the semis its going to be really really tough beating either Tnt or Redbull to enter the finals.

Peace Out.

I'm currently watching the TnT - RB game.

Man, I wish I was there. Looks like everybody's having fun. Scott Burell just got slapped a technical. hehehe. I wonder if he will still be here if RedBull wins, I mean I don't think he's the type of import you want in the Finals. Sure he was a former NBA player, he does a lot of things like assisting and playing 'D but he just doesn't score enough. He doesn't have the ability to dominate.

And I wouldn't put it past RedBull to suddenly change their import at this stage. After all, they did replace Antonio Lang and brought in Sean Lampley in game four? or was it game five? of the best of seven finals series a few years back.

Hehe, I don't care who wins, SMB is gonna win the conference anyway. Wahahahaha.

Beside Scott Burrell and Antonio Lang, are there any former NBA players in the PBA ? :)
I'd appreciate if someone can list them !

TnT enters the semis!

Final score is 95-81

Yet another conference for Red Bull down the drain. They top the eliminations yet they fail to enter the semis...

Too bad a great game has to be marred by yet another incident of on-court barbarism...

Jimwell Torion just got thrown out of the game for a really hard flagrant foul on Jimmy Alapag... According to the courtside TV reporter Alapag's nose is fractured and it will definitely need surgery... Too bad it had to end with this incident... Although I think the refs handled the game pretty well up until that happened...

I hope the Commisioners office metes out the proper fines and suspensions.

Although its great to see team owner Manny Pangilinan, probably one of the richest CEO's in Asia jumping up in down with all the fans hehehe :D

@alexboom
As far as I know the only import to have NBA experience among the current PBA imports is Scott Burell, but his season just ended a few minutes ago... I'll try to come up with a list of former NBA players that have played in the PBA in the past 2 years and post it later though... :)

Hey, there's a PBA thread! Nice.

I hope the Commisioners office metes out the proper fines and suspensions

He has been fined only PhP 70, 000. That's very very low. When will the Commissioners Office start handing out fines that will really kick players in the balls?

Although he has also been suspended for the duration of the PBA's "transitional season" next year. (January - September)

Another thing I just found out:

The entire Red Bull coaching staff led by Head Coach Yeng Guiao, along with Team Manager Tony Chua, Team Consultant Andy Jao and trainer Kirk Collier have handed in their resignation letters.

I really think Yeng Guiao needs to move on. Red Bull probably has one of the best line-ups on paper right now, but the fact that they haven't been anywhere near the finals this year means something is wrong.

Although I think guys like Andy Jao and Kirk Collier need to stay. And if the front office know what they're doing then they won't accept their resignations.

Red Bull Barako team manager Tony Chua and the entire coaching staff, led by head coach Yeng Guiao, tendered a courtesy resignation to the team management last night following the team’s sorry exit in the Reinforced Conference that capped a season of failures for the Thunder in the PBA.

Chua and Guiao initiated the move as the two realized they failed to meet the expectation of the management in their fourth year of participation in the league.

"This season proves to be a very competent and challenging one for us as determined by our standing in every conference. But due to some circumstances, we failed to evade collapse during the quarterfinals. That indeed is disheartening and painful.

"We realize we fail in our supposed roles to bring the team to greater heights. We also feel that we fail in our commitment to keep the company legacy of having one team with vision and action."

It was a painful season for the Thunder who dominated the eliminations of both the All-Filipino and the Reinforced Conferences only to be booted out in the quarterfinals.

F**K

*^(@)*&(#&)(@^$*@#&$()*(%)@(*#

We lost!!!!!!1

I cant freaking believe it, I was waiting for a miracle to happen but I guess no miracles for Ginebra this time.

Sta Lucia just beat Alaska in the other knockout game so the semis cast is finally complete. Anyone know when it will start? Will it on Sunday or will there be some sort of break? until wednesday?

Heres my fearless forecast:

Semis;
TnT beats Coke in 5 games.
SMB beats Sta Lucia in 4 games. (or maybe a 3-0 sweep)

Finals:
If someone jumps to an early lead (maybe 2-0 or 3-1) then I think whoever leads the series will win it as long as they do it in 5 games or less. If the series goes to a game 6 or game 7 then I think SMB has the big advantage in terms of experience assuming that everyone is healthy of coursee

with SMB's performance last night against the SLR, i think they'll be the reinforced conference champions. Kwan Johnson is an unstopable scoring machine last night along with Mente's 4 out of 4 three pointers. If they could just maintain that kind of performance they can surely sweep the SLR.

Game 7!!! Game 7!!! Game 7!!!

Wahaha!

Did you know that Sunday's game 7 will only be the 13th game 7 ever in the history of the PBA  ever since the best of seven format was introduced?

Offseason News Bits:

>>>The PBA has already cut its contract with the NBN4/IBC13 TV consortium, and are already shopping for a new TV partner. Reports are ABC5 have the best chances of landing the contract. :( Damn, I want Studio 23 to carry the games!

>>>The board of Governors have agreed to implement the new season format starting next year. The new format will follow the FIBA calendar which will *hopefully* open up the possibility of PBA pros playing in international competitions.

Although there will be a transitional conference next year wherein two foreign teams will be invited. The Commissioners Office have assured fans that this time they will make sure that top teams will be invited to avoid ridiculous blowouts like last year. Invitations have already been sent to the JBL (Japan), KBL (South Korea), NBL (Australia) and the Angolan leagues. Oh and they've finally gotten rid of the stupid quotient system used in the All Filipino Cup this year.

>>>John Moran could be the new Shell coach. Unless the Basketball Coaches Association raises another stupid howl over a foreigner coaching in the PBA. Didn't they see what former UNLV coach Bill Bayno did with TnT?

>>>Draft Order: (Excluding changes due to picks involved in previous trades)
    1. Shell
    2. Purefoods
    3. Ginebra
    4. FedEx
    5. Alaska
    6. Red Bull
    7. Sta. Lucia
    8. San Miguel
    9. Talk N’ Text
    10. Coca-Cola

Talk N Text acquired 2002 MVP Willie Miller for any TNT player except Asi Taulava or Jimmy Alapag

Talk N Text acquired Yancy de Ocampo for a draft pick and the rights of Norman Gonzales.

It looks like the Phone Pals will go for bigger things come next season.

Limpot traded for Siegle.!?!?

Holy CRAP!

Check out one of the worst trades ever in the history of the PBA:

Due to the really stupid and just plain bullcrap league rule disallowing sister treams to trade players directly, Sta Lucia has entered the picture, here's what happens:

Ginebra trades Limpot to Sta Lucia for their 2nd round draft pick in the 2004 draft.

Sta Lucia trades Limpot to Purefoods for Siegle

Sta Lucia trades Siegle to Ginebra in exchange for the draft pick it earlier gave the Kings!!

WTF!!?? This is total comedy. What's the use of the rule disallowing sister teams from trading with each other if this is what happens? Plus is this even legal? Can Sta. Lucia get its draft pick back when it never really gave it to the Kings in the first place???

This is just plain BS. No wonder the PBA is starting to lose gate reciepts to collegiate leagues like the UAAP and the NCAA.

Not a bad start for the PBA this year. Attendance is up almost 10%, the TV coverage is a hell of alot better than last year. The PBA honcho's must be smiling ear to ear.

Although most imports that started out are totally crap. Its good most teams are finally sending most imports home.

Probably the only decent imports who started out this season are Art Long, Randy Holcomb and Galen Young. Mark Sanford looks pretty good but I don't know if he can really dominate, though the Tigers are doing great despite the injuries to all their star players.

The new import of Purefoods who debuted last night, Eddie Elisma ?, looks pretty good too. Derrick Brown is baaaack, though surprisingly he decided to sign up with SLR. I hear Red Bull has also brought in a new replacement, who'll debut this afternoon. Also FedEx has *finally* replaced Alvin Jefferson, why'd they take so long to replace this guy anyway?

Yeah a great start for the league this year. The fans are back and the games are pretty exciting.

Although i also noticed the dip in the quality of imports this year. But its great to see teams finally replacing most of the imports. I think most of the teams now have imports that fit their system.

Its a long conference so most teams are really flying imports in every week hoping to get the perfect import early on before its too late. Right now Red Bull is really struggling. Theyre on their 3rd import of the conference right now, -Doug Wrenn- and after that crappy performance last game I don't know if he's already been replaced or been given another chance.

With Art Long virtually dominating the paint inside, I wouldn't be surprised to see guys like Terquin Mott or Devin Davis suiting up in the PBA again.
