SCOUTING REPORT #3
We're now starting to get to business in the scouting, as the next stopover is in Europe, with a brief layover in South America. Europe has always been renowned for producing skilled NBA-ready players who can shoot the lights out. However, recently NBA GM's have gone bananas over skilled Euro youngsters and picked them based on potential, before they were ready to make any sort of impact in Europe, let alone the NBA. Meanwhile, South America has provided a few NBA studs in recent years, will this trend continue on?!?
EUROPE & SOUTH AMERICA
A few Euro bigmen headline this year's class, but they are joined by a couple of NLSC guards who are intent on making the NBA their playgrounds. Two South Americans also figure to land at opposite ends of the 1st Round.
MARTYNAS ANDRIUSKEVICIUS
Whilst he probably isn't ready to contribute for a couple of seasons, I don't think many teams want to pass on a kid as big as Andriuskevicius (7'3") who is both co-ordinated and has skills unbelying of his height. At present, this Lithuanian prodigy could go anywhere in the Top 5 picks in the draft. However any team that picks him will have to be very patient as his offensive skills are almost non-existent, and he really needs to hit the weight room unless he wants to be beaten up by the likes of Shaq and the Beast. Behind Andrew Bogut, he is the best bigman available in this draft, and probably the best true centre prospect available (considering Bogut is probably more of a PF than a C).
NBA Comparison - Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Umm....that looks an awful lot like a....umm....let's move on
FRAN VAZQUEZ
Vazquez will be the first 22 and over player drafted in this year's draft. Vazquez is an athletic player who has great speed, mobility and excellent leaping ability. He’s got a big wingspan and is a tireless worker on both ends of the court. Unlike a lot of other Europeans, Vazquez won't be intimidated at the next level and should slot straight in and help an NBA team from the offset. Vazquez is currently ranked 5th in many mock drafts and will likely be picked somewhere between the 4-10 range.
NBA Comparison - Poor Man's Marcus Camby
Fran is not shy on using his leaping ability to throw it down
TIAGO SPLITTER
Whilst his height (6'11") suggests he might eventually play a bit of centre, his game suggests he might become a SF. At present however, he's a PF and a good one at that. For a long time Tiago Splitter has been considered Brazil's best pro prospect (better than Nene, Vareajo & Barbosa). The time for him to come to the NBA has come. Splitter is currently projected to be picked in the 5-10 range and could possibly have the biggest impact of this Euro class. Tiago has a nice and improving offensive game, which includes good footwork in the post and the ability to step out and hit the open shot from anywhere on the court. It must be said however that he's physically not strong enough and will struggle initially on defense and the boards. The upside is definitely there though.
NBA Comparison - Pau Gasol
Dubbed the last Brazilian Pearl, can Tiago take Brazilian basketball to a level not seen since Oscar Schmidt?!?
SILVA BIASON ('Melo)
All I can say about this kid is "wow". This is because he brings the "wow"-factor everytime he steps foot on the court. Silva Biason is a superb athlete who's body was designed with basketball in mind. He can jump out of the gym and he's no doubt gonna become a fan favourite before too long. Biason has been dubbed "Euro Jordan", but we've heard that name thrown around too often. His game isn't anywhere near as complete as MJ's, then again, whose game is? I prefer to call him the "Spanish Fly" as he's always buzzing down the court at blindingly quick speeds and he has no problems getting airborne either.
NBA Comparison - JR Smith meets T-Mac(athleticism)
Even down to the sneakers, this kid can fly
LEO REYES (Seraph)
With all the superb Euro talent at the top of the crop, it's easy to forget some of the other guys. Someone you don't won't to forgot is Leo Reyes, the Argentinan dynamo. Whilst severely undersized at 5'8" you would expect him to have to be an aggressive offensive player to cut it in the NBA. Well this doesn't stand true for Reyes. Reyes has an uncanny ability at letting the game come to him as he gets everyone else the ball in scoring positions and can hit the open shot if the defense gives it to him. Reyes will likely be picked up in the early 20s and could be the missing link on a championship contender.
NBA Comparison - Steve Nash meets Michael Adams
Word around the street has it that Seraph designs his own shoes....
NOTE: I have since adjusted Seraph's age as I did not know his age until after screenshots were taken.
