Yea. Most likely I'll get the PS4 if I get a next gen console.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

from that GAF place.
I am still in shock at how big of a clusterfuck this is.

● The worst most, mis-communicated reveal in game industry history other than maybe Saturn.
● Once every 24 hour internet check just to be able to continue to play your games
● A horrendous proprietary used game system that gives pubs and Microsoft a 10% of the profits, thus ensuring the deals one can get on Used games are reduced and having less options for every gamer
● Complete inability to rent, lend or borrow games without paying a "fee", since every game must be installed. And the fee is the price of a brand new game, which Phil Harrison tells us to "think of it like a new game", because he is an abominable retard.
● Complete fucking tall tales and fabrications regarding the "Infinite Power of Cloud" which they did because...
● ...their system is a woefully underpowered trojan horse arbitrarily increased in price because of...
● ...a piece of shit dead-end gaming technology called "Kinect 2.0" which on top of being complete garbage for most genres, also is packed in with every system and...
● ...is also a horrendous invasion of privacy since it cannot be shut off without unplugging the system.
● A console which is also, after all this time, having massive eSRAM yield issues because Microsoft is caught rushing the One to the market.
● Also, contrary to the forward thinking Sony and - holy shit - Nintendo, they won't allow indies to self-publish. For no reason at all other than to be awkward, I suppose.
● Continuing this theme, they are also much, much further behind in supporting indies this go around than PS4 is, thus failing to capitalize on the good will engendered from Indies on 360.
● And they wasted their reveal talking about TV, TV, TV, TV, TV to do a function that nobody in their right mind would do if they had a DVR, to talk about sports and Kinect and have only two real games at their reveal.
● And is now liberally peppering all their attacks with a unhealthy dose of aggressive arrogance.
● On top of that gigantic shit sandwich, they have now also canceled their post-E3 media roundtable, presumably because they're tired of being eviscerated and embarrassed non-stop since January 2013. Once again, because of shit they did and no one else.
● Plus their presentation of their OS at the media reveal was confirmed to be completely fake, which wouldn't have been terrible except the entire time of the reveal they were trying to convince people it was real. "See how fast this thing moves!?"
● One final tip: Their dev tools are also comically behind its primary competitor.

Funny stuff that is just random and hilarious and not really life ending:

● And just for a cherry on top, because this final one is more hilarious than game changing or anything, Xbox Netherlands was caught borrowing images of PS4 exclusives to make their system look more appealing (thanks to JollyCorner for this tip)

DID I MISS ANYTHING GUYZ? Because holy goddamn shit at this point. This has been without exception the most biblical epic failure of console reveals, even topping the PS3's $599.99 just for its sheer confounding, aimless nonsense since the beginning of 2013. Not a single day has passed by without some relentless bit of tortuously negative Xbox One news.

The kicker? This is ALL Microsoft's fault and they should have seen the reaction coming a mile away since the problems they introduced of their own free will has been eviscerated among gamers and the press for years now, to say nothing of things like the Sim City or Diablo III debacle.

The proof is in the pudding. Holy goddamn fuck

In short, they've revealed a bunch of unappealing and non-user friendly features, while doing little to appease everyone's concerns about them. In the latest podcast we discussed the possibility of gamers making a snap decision when there's still much to learn about both consoles, but nothing about the Xbox One has been particularly encouraging. Again, I'm happy enough that I went with the 360 in the previous generation, but I just don't feel much incentive to go with Microsoft again this generation. I don't think there's any feature or possible exclusive that will outweigh the most troubling aspects of the console revealed so far, to say nothing of further bad news that just doesn't seem to stop coming.

Two of our most trusted neoGAF insiders have said that Microsoft is reacting hard to what has went down, and so they're going to try to dismantle PS4's image as a "for gamers" console by paying publishers and devs to not show their multiplatform titles during E3 on a PS4. In other words, even if the multiplatform version is coming out for the PS4, they won't be able to show them at E3, thus contributing to the perception that somehow Sony is getting significantly less support for PS4 than Microsoft is "for gamers."

Gaikai was the "solution" for playing PS3 games on the new console. iirc, same with the PS2 and PS1 games.

i actually applied for a job there a few months back. no response

Well played, Microsoft. Of course, with that information out there on top of the existing displeasure with the details revealed thus far, it may be for naught.

No renting, no loaning. No private sales (unless selling to someone who has been on your friends list for 30 days)

Console Checks in Every 24 hours

Trade-ins are up to the publisher and only at participating retailers

You can give a game to a friend only if they have been on your friends list for 30 days, and then it is stuck with them.

Up to 10 family members can play your games from any console at any time

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Not to play Microsoft's advocate, but I still don't trust Sony's silence. Don't put your money on a PS4 until Sony comes and flat-out says "all those things that Microsoft's saying, we ain't doing none of them." I'd bet that if Sony didn't have similar measures, they'd be jumping all over the opportunity to stomp on Microsoft after the confirmation of the unpopular measures put in by the latter.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:31 am

Of course Sony is going to do them too. Word is it's not necessarily Microsoft who wanted these policies, it's EA/Activision/Ubisoft.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Yup. That's why I have my reservations, and feel that people are "jumping ship" all too much in a hurry.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Sony did confirm that the console will work without an internet connection, ever, offline only. That 24 hour checkin is the deal breaker for me thanks to Vermont utilities (this was the first Winter without a major outage of Internet for us). I rarely trade games in, because you get nothing from them, but I do buy used, so that will play into how much I like the PS4.

EA getting rid of all online passes pretty much confirms some sort of publisher enforced DRM for PS4.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Big selling point for me is that the PS4 is more powerful, which if they follow the current gen consoles life span will be of even more significance 5 years from now. Not needing online connection is big too. Also I want a gaming console not a cable box.

A tear-down from Wired magazine reveals that the Sony PS4’s GPU has 50 per cent more shader cores than the Xbox One – 1,152 against 768.

The Sony PS4 uses 5.5GHz GDDR5 RAM, and we believe the Xbox One uses 2.1GHz DDR3 RAM.

They sound similar, but the different ways they operate has significant knock-on effects for the gaming potential of the two consoles.

The ‘G’ of the PS4's GGDR5 RAM stands for ‘graphics’, and this is a type of memory commonly used in dedicated PC graphics cards – although some do use DDR3 instead, usually cheaper models. In a shamelessly generalising sense, DDR3 is used for main system memory and GDDR5 for graphics-based tasks.

The PS4 is rated at 1.8TFLOPs, the Xbox One just 1.23TFLOPs.

Estimates put the PS4’s memory bandwidth at 176GB/second, compared to 68GB/second for the Xbox One.

That said, the PS3 is spec-for-spec significantly more powerful than the Xbox 360 - and yet its games are not notably better-looking across the board. Is this just history repeating itself?

The game is completely different this time around, because Sony has sensibly abandoned the Cell system architecture used in the PS3. The Cell architecture of the PS3 was notoriously difficult to code for, compared to the more familiar PowerPC-based Xbox, thereby piddling away much of the console’s technological superiority.

This time, the new systems from Microsoft and Sony share the x86 architecture, as seen in Windows-powered laptops and desktops across the world.

Sony hasn't been revealed to be freely sharing customers' information with the NSA and isn't insisting on having an always-on camera, microphone and biometric reader in my house.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Sat Jun 08, 2013 3:37 am

Kinect 2.0 has been confirmed to be able to have its sensors turned off whether the console is turned on or off. The fact that it needs to be connected to the console at all times is stupid, even a bit suspicious, but I've seen this information confirmed on a lot of websites. If it's still doing things with its sensors off, and what these things are, I have no idea.

The part about sharing customers' information with the NSA, I wasn't aware of. But then again, "Sony hasn't been revealed" doesn't mean they aren't.

I'm not trying to be a Microsoft apologist. There's a lot of things I really dislike about their choices. I'm just not that sure Sony isn't going down the same path.

chicagoRAW, the last paragraph makes EXACTLY the same point I made on the last Podcast. No matter your specs, if you have a weird architecture and a bad, convoluted API that's hard to learn and utilize to the max, developers won't be able to take advantage of them. PS3 was proof of that. More power, no games to show that off, developers complaining how hard a console it is to develop for. PS4 again seems to be more powerful than the Xbox One on all fronts. Here's hoping Sony learned from its mistakes and have both an architecture and API that's easy to work with, especially considering the fact I'll have to be coding for the PS4 sooner or later.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Sat Jun 08, 2013 3:58 am

Well from what has been said, both are using the more "friendlier" x86 architecture so it shouldn't be as confusing as the cell architecture was on the PS3.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Sat Jun 08, 2013 4:06 am

Yeah, and that's very encouraging.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Sat Jun 08, 2013 5:27 am

Haven't confirmed if true but one of the comments in chicagoraw's link...

Why did you mention only RAM and CPUs/GPUs when the true difference is their APIs?

Programs that use PlayStation Shading Language can be optimized much more than DirectX11.1.
Also, PS4 allows that kind of CPU code optimization that Xbox usually hides from developers. And now it will be much easier for PS4 developers to use such optimizations as they are more familiar with x86 than with Cell.

And PS4 allows using OpenGL which means games can be easily ported to Mac OS X and Linux, which is a new trend started by Valve.

In fact PS4 could be more powerful than Xbox One by relying only on its software. Again: if they both had identical hardware, PS4 would be still more powerful, because Sony's software allows you to use more computing power from the hardware.

Re: Xbox One Revealed

Sat Jun 08, 2013 6:04 am

If this comes from a developer with sufficient experience with both dev kits, then I rest my case. If not, then... well...
