I was gonna say that too. Butler was hard to contain, and now that the Mavs traded Barea, Beaubois has more minutes as Kidd's main backup.

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Spurs Beat (Playoffs!)

Playoffs Preview: (1) Spurs vs. (4) Mavericks
    nba.com/spurs/beat | May 1st, 2011

SAN ANTONIO -- POOF. Just like that, it was done. Even after losing Game 2 and playing Game 5 without their leader, Tim Duncan, the San Antonio Spurs, behind a suffocating defense from DeJuan Blair and Drew Gooden and riding the offense of Tiago Splitter and Larry Hughes, dispatched the New Orleans Hornets to win their first-round series, 4-1. In doing so, the Spurs are now enjoying a huge confidence booster for this Semis against the Dallas Mavericks. Tomorrow, the team with the best record in the NBA, the Spurs will kick-off the Western Conference Semifinals by hosting the fourth-seeded Mavericks; the Spurs won the last three games of the season series for a 3-1 record between the teams.

Despite a tough Game 5, 4-of-12 from the field, Manu Ginobili is still the guy every team says they will stop heading into a playoff series with San Antonio; even more now that Duncan is out. Hughes bounced back from a bad Game 4 (four points)) to be a big-time difference maker in Game 5, with a team-high 18 points. Splitter answered the call for Duncan's absence with 15 and a game-best 13 rebounds, easily, his best game of the series; something that we hope will become a precedent for the Spurs in coming years. The Brazilian had a more offensive role in Game 4 with 19 points; he was asked by coach Gregg Popovich to carry a different burden in the clinching game. Give credit to New Orleans for never really backing down during this series, but they just didn't have the scoring when they needed it the most, in the last two games. The loss to injury of Marco Belinelli was a big blow for them; Trevor Ariza and Antawn Jamison were near unstoppable in some passages of the series, but the truth is, at times it seemed they knew the enevitable end for their season. They face a long summer of change having ten players with expiring contracts, including Belinelli, David West, Marcus Thornton, Jerryd Bayless, Willie Green and Aaron Gray, among others.

But the season ain't over for San Antonio, not yet: up next is Dallas, who also needed 5 games to defeat the Utah Jazz. It was an interesting series until minutes remaining in Game 1... Mehmet Okur broke his left foot with moments left in the fourth quarter and the Jazz couldn't recover from that punch. Despite that, the Jazz were able to tie the series at 1-1 behind Deron Williams' 21 points and 12 assists. Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler then steered the Mavericks to the Semis without any big brakes from Utah; Al Jefferson had his efforts, but it was not enough. A 11-15 FG game by Nowitzki in Game 5 ended the series. Now, onto the Semis. You'd think the Mavericks would have the advantage in the first couple of games since the Spurs won't have Duncan; a point many of us would've agreed with, until Splitter, along with Blair and Gooden, had their own in Game 5 against the Hornets. The Spurs proved they are up to any challenge with that win. Can they duplicate the effort against the Mavericks?

They have a big chance, even with Dallas enjoying a completely healthy roster; that could be a big key for the Mavs in a possible Game 5 or 6. Tyson Chandler had a torn MCL in one of the first games of November but had a miraculous recovery and returned in the beginnings of March. With the loss of Duncan, the Spurs are younger and more interesting to watch, but where the Mavericks really have an advantage is late in the ball-game. Every single one of us knows the Spurs have become the anti-definition of execution in the 4th quarter in the first half of the regular season; I can remember them losing at least eight games where they had a double-digit lead in the first half. But in the second half they concentrated and played much better defense in the second halves. Can't wait for the series to start...

      Image

2010, November 26 --- DAL @ SAS --- Spurs ripped by Chandler & Mavericks, who win 3rd straight; more boos from AT&T Center crowd: Even a huge injury bug has not stopped the Dallas Mavericks from the best start to a season in team's recent memory. Tyson Chandler scored 22 points and 17 rebounds and Jason Kidd added 17 points and 11 assists as the banged-up Mavericks never trailed in the game, cruising to a 101-86 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night. Despite a recent injury whirlwind, the Mavericks have the best record in the West with 13-2, their best record since 2002-03, when they opened the season 14-1. Dirk Nowitzki started despite suffering from migraines in recent days. “I took a lot of pills,” Nowitzki said, “I felt the headaches during the game, but I did not want to leave him (Chandler) out there all by himself.” He was sent home from yesterday's team scrimmage to rest and briefly left for the locker room in the third quarter, with the Mavs up by 13, and returned in the fourth to score 10 of his 16 points, as Chandler scored 18 of his 22 in the first half. (Read More ... )

2010, December 30 --- SAS @ DAL --- Duncan, Parker, Ginobili combine for plus-minus of +44 in win over struggling Mavericks: The Dallas Mavericks wish they could win without Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood. Rookie James Anderson scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, helping the San Antonio Spurs hold off the Mavericks for a 106-103 victory. “This was a huge win for us on the road,” Anderson said. “Specially after the loss to the Lakers. Dallas had great defensive tactics, I'm not even sure how we won this game.” The Spurs had a season-worst 22 turnovers. Dallas made 44 percent of their field goals and had just seven turnovers, but were doomed to a loss after letting the Spurs made 9-of-12 shots from 3-point territory. The Mavericks started the season 13-2, but are 5-11 since losing Chandler and Haywood to injuries. “It's killing us,” Dallas' Jason Kidd said. “We have been searching for ways to be successful but we are failing, badly.” Despite trailing by 11 midway through the fourth period, the Mavs had a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 2. They had a chance to force overtime after Corey Maggette made 1-of-2 free throws. Following a timeout, with 5.4 seconds left, Kidd had a pick-and-roll with Dirk Nowitzki but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. (Read More ... )

2011, January 14 --- DAL @ SAS --- Spurs ride “Fantastic Four” effort; recover from 16-point deficit to defeat struggling Mavs: Even recording superstar deadmau5 had to marvel at the San Antonio Spurs and their West-best 30-10 record. A day after Cream & AEG Live recognized him as the first electronic artist ever to sell out London's Earls Court, Joel Zimmerman (that's his real name) caused quite a stir from courtside and again in the Spurs locker room after the game. Despite being from Canada, Zimmerman said he's a big fan of both the Spurs and of course, the Toronto Raptors. Zimmerman watched the Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks, 120-111; it was the 4th straight victory for the Spurs. George Hill scored all of his 10 points in the second half and Matt Bonner had 11 points and four rebounds staying perfect from the field, while Tiago Splitter added 9 points and 7 rebounds to help San Antonio avenge one of its worst losses of this season (November 27). Bonner was 4/4 from the floor, including 3/3 from 3-point territory for a +19. Splitter was a game-high +21, as he played the entire fourth quarter, where the Spurs posted a key 12-2 run to escape with the win. Hill also added 11 assists -- +18. Corey Maggette posted 19 points, three boards and three assists, as this 4 Spurs combined for a plus-minus of +70. (Read More ... )

2011, March 17 --- SAS @ DAL --- Manu, Parker, Spurs pull away from Nowitzki, Mavericks with big third quarter surge: The San Antonio Spurs didn't need Manu Ginobili's crunch time heroics: they had Tony Parker. Parker scored 18 points -- 10 in the third quarter -- and Ginobili added 18 points and four boards to help the Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks, 104-89 for their eighth consecutive victory. The Spurs finished a small three-game road trip with a perfect 3-0 record, that also included wins against Houston and Miami. “The run couldn't appear on a better time. We were kind of at a low offensively when Tony started getting some shots and started knocking them down,” Ginobili said. “He got going a little bit. If you hit like two, then you start feeling good. I'd say he didn't feel like I needed to and he just was playing. That's Tony.” The Frenchman capped a 14-2 run with a pair of jumpers in the third, that essentially clinched the win for his team. “We are a team of spurts,” Parker said. “I came in for the team and got us going. In the third period we really locked down on defense and Manu and Tim played one of their usual great performances.” Tim Duncan contributed with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks for the Spurs. IMO, it would have gone to 7 games if Horford didn't get injured. It will be an interesting series in real life. :)

No Duncan but with Spaggetti and a developed Banana Splitter, I'm sure you can handle the Mavs.

What the heck? Chandler is averaging 22 and 17 against you? Watch out for this Mavs team. Without Timmy, they can kill you on the inside and also you're help defense makes no one fear you (with Banana & Gooden).

I hope you win this, because you deserve it for your great D. But the Mavs will be tough to handle.

That Chandler average was only for one game. I doubt he would 'murderize' the Spurs. :?

I hope. Dirk had great games against me. But then Butler, Terry will be hard to stop too.

Shadow said it. Chandler had that huge game against me, then had that torn MCL, and in the trade deadline I don't know what happened and all injuries were deleted. :?

Splitter, Blair spark Spurs to Game 1 win; big blow for Mavs as Terry breaks his wrist
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (DAL :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, May 2 -- DeJuan Blair provided a spark that eventually lit a fire under his San Antonio Spurs teammates. Blair scored 17 points, to go with 10 rebounds, and was part of a second-half surge as the Spurs raced to a 110-100 Game 1 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, in the Western Conference Semifinals. Tiago Splitter added 18 points and 11 boards, and off the bench, Drew Gooden and James Anderson contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Spurs, who looked as crisp as they have this postseason despite the absence of injured star Tim Duncan. “DeJuan made a couple shots in the first half and then got his energy level up,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. “He was a big part of our second half run.” Blair scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the second half, helping San Antonio to a 85-72 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Spurs took control of the game at the end, with a 54-38 advantage in the paint, and their reserves, who won the bench battle 47-35. “Everybody knew what was at stake here,” said Duncan, in street clothes. “It's easy for players to say it's just another game. But everybody knows it wasn't just another game: Game 1 of the Semis. It was a game that both teams felt they had to have.”

Splitter again started for Duncan; in addition to his 11 boards, he also had a career-high 5 blocks in 41 minutes, because of Gooden's early foul trouble. “Drew started off pretty well, but then he got into foul trouble so quickly,” added Popovich. “Fortunately, both DeJuan and Tiago were there to give us a lift.” Blair looked tentative and overmatched at times in the first round series against New Orleans, but his confidence never wavered. “I can't get down on a couple of bad games,” said Blair. “Today I was able to get a big contribution for the team, but I can't rest on the laurels. We only won one game.” The game was tied 58-58 midway through the third period when the Spurs took control with a 17-2 surge. Blair and Manu Ginobili scored six points each in the run, which opened a 75-60 lead. Ginobili shot a terrible 3-of-17 from the field, but found his way for 11 points. Tony Parker shot 3-of-14 for eight points, as he shot a combined 6-of-31 with the Argentinian. “When my shots weren't falling I started to get more nervous. Tony is still wondering what happened with his shots,” said Ginobili. “We both must relax for Game 2 and hopefully we can give the team a bigger presence.”

“They shot the ball well, played great defense, and got less turnovers than us,” said Mavericks forward Caron Butler. “We just couldn't seem to stop them in the second half.” Butler scored 21 points for Dallas to go with nine rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki posted 22 points and 10 boards to lead the Mavericks, who suffered Jason Terry's broken wrist in the fourth quarter. Terry will miss the rest of the series; he was able to add 14 points for his team before going down. Jason Kidd had nine points and eight assists for his team, but six turnovers that proved costly in 37 minutes. His backup, Rodrigue Beaubois, had nine points too, but with zero turnovers and in only 12 minutes. Both teams got to the charity stripe constantly, 33 free throws for San Antonio and 37 for the Mavs. Nowitzki and Butler had six free throw attempts each, while Terry had eight for Dallas; Blair had six, Splitter and Ginobili had four apiece and Larry Hughes had seven for the Spurs; Hughes added 11 points off the bench. “It's been a long time since we've given up 36 points in a period,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. “That's a lot. We're a better team then we're showing. I just hope we start showing it.”
