Part Four: Race to the MVP
Injuries to key teammates have not stopped Derrick Rose from soaring or the Bulls from winning.
1. Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets (41-6)
Stats: PPG -- 21.6; RPG -- 4.7; APG -- 10.6; SPG -- 2.6; BPG -- 0.3; FG% -- .556; 3P% -- .491; FT% -- .894
Last Month's Rank: 1
Comment: First month into the new year, CP3's numbers took a slight dip and New Orleans didn't go undefeated. That's okay though, cause they are still on pace to win 72 games.
2. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers (39-8)
Stats: PPG -- 31.4; RPG -- 4.5; APG -- 4.9; SPG -- 2.0; BPG -- 0.5; FG% -- .543; 3P% -- .479; FT% -- .859
Last Month's Rank: 2
Comment: The Lakers have the second best record in the entire league, the best home record in the league (22-1) and the biggest point differential in the league with their league-best points per game average at 109.1 - that's 3.8 more than the second highest scoring team, the Orlando Magic. Want to know why? One of the biggest reason is because Kobe's scoring the ball better by the day. Scary thought considering he is going on 34 in this new calander year.
3. Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic (36-10)
Stats: PPG -- 18.9; RPG -- 11.5; APG -- 0.8; SPG -- 0.7; BPG -- 3.0; FG% -- .542; 3P% -- .500; FT% -- .547
Last Month's Rank: 3
Comment: Even if you put Orlando in the powerhouse-filled Western Conference, they'll still be in the top 3 seeds. The Magic have the third best record in the NBA and the best record in the East simply by bombing away from three point range. They have the most threes attempted and makes by far in the league and it's due to Howard's abilities on the offensive glass. The Magic are tops in the NBA in offensive rebounds per game and it's not hard to see why.
4. Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls (32-16)
Stats: PPG -- 25.7; RPG -- 2.9; APG -- 7.9; SPG -- 1.7; BPG -- 0.6; FG% -- .526; 3P% -- .350; FT% -- .836
Last Month's Rank: 5
Comment: The Bulls were able to go 12-5 in January with Carlos Boozer out of the lineup for much of the month, and even had a 7 game winning streak, because of how Rose had put them on his shoulder and stepped up his leadership and play on the court. His numbers dipped just a tad from last month, but he has been doing a lot more of the "intangibles" that seperate the good players from the great ones; and that's what's gotten them some quality wins despite the loss of their big man.
5. Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks (30-16)
Stats: PPG -- 26.6; RPG -- 9.2; APG -- 1.5; SPG -- 1.3; BPG -- 1.3; FG% -- .490; 3P% -- .441; FT% -- .904
Last Month's Rank: N/A
Comment: The Dallas Mavericks continue their solid regular season play behind the towering seven foot scoring machine Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk is shooting the lights out from deep, connecting on nearly 50% of his field goals, just under 45% from three and 90% from the charity stripe. It's no wonder why Dallas stays as a contender year after year.
6. Yao Ming, Houston Rockets (33-13)
Stats: PPG -- 19.1; RPG -- 10.2; APG -- 1.2; SPG -- 0.2; BPG -- 2.9; FG% -- .529; 3P% -- .200; FT% -- .876
Last Month's Rank: 4
Comment:
Yao's stats took a hit this month, most noticeably in the areas of rebounding and blocking, but that really wasn't a big factor for the Rockets as they continue their strong play and has began to build a small gap between themselves and the rest of the conference.
7. Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat (27-20)
Stats: PPG -- 26.7; RPG -- 3.7; APG -- 6.9; SPG -- 2.5; BPG -- 1.7; FG% -- .508; 3P% -- .319; FT% -- .763
Last Month's Rank: N/A
Comment: Wade and the Heat are not having the kind of season they expected to have, given their highway robbery of the Bulls (courtesy of Wade) in the offseason, and with Jermaine O'Neal going down for the rest of the season they look to have even more trouble on their hands. However, Pat Riley can sleep well at night, because Dwyane Wade has certainly been putting on his A game so far.
8. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics (
Stats: PPG -- 17.9; RPG -- 7.6; APG -- 9.0; SPG -- 2.3; BPG -- 0.2; FG% -- .519; 3P% -- .204; FT% -- .609
Last Month's Rank: 9
Comment: Another month, two more triple doubles for the Celtics' very own Rajon Rondo, making his season total to be a league leading six. He also had 9 games where he was just one or two assists/rebounds shy of a triple double in January. Impressive? Hell yes.
9. Pau Gasol, Los Angeles Lakers (39-8)
Stats: PPG -- 21.4; RPG -- 9.4; APG -- 2.3; SPG -- 0.3; BPG -- 2.2; FG% -- .559; 3P% -- .500; FT% -- .713
Last Month's Rank: 8
Comment: Kobe's co-pilot continues his solid play as he constantly puts pressure on both ends of the floor with his seven foot frame, one that contians the skillset of a man about 6-8 inches shorter. The Spaniard has been dominant especially on the offensive end, where he's averaging over 21 points per game at a very efficient rate of almost 56% from the field.
10. Carmelo Anthony, Milwaukee Bucks (27-22)
Stats: PPG -- 26.4; RPG -- 7.8; APG -- 2.9; SPG -- 2.1; BPG -- 0.4; FG% -- .548; 3P% -- .426; FT% -- .761
Last Month's Rank: 6
Comment: When Carmelo Anthony decided to sign with the Bucks, he didn't expect them to hover around the middle playoff seeds of the Eastern Confernece, and he sure damn hell did not expect them to have a sub .500 road record (11-16). Melo and the Bucks have struggled big time in the past month and with the trade deadline coming up we may see some moves done by Milwaukee to please their disgruntled scoring machine.
