Derrick Rose did his job. But Sacramento did, too. The Bulls point guard scored a season-high 28 points, but Kings guard Kevin Martin scored 17 of his 22 points in second half, and Jason Thompson had 15 points to lead the Kings to a 96-93 victory over Chicago on Tuesday night. Kirk Hinrich (15 points) missed a three at the buzzer that would have sent the game to overtime; he made 5-of-12 shots, and all three of his free throws. “They had two guys over at me every time (in the second half),” Rose said. “When I get going, they send everybody. It wasn't easy.” The Kings survived despite early foul trouble from Spencer Hawes, who played his first game since his injury. He had 4 points and six rebounds. Thompson had 9 of his 15 points in the third quarter to maintain the Kings' six-point halftime lead.
“I think it was really a good thing that I missed these two weeks,” Hawes said. “One, for me, giving rest for my body and for the injury to leave. And two, for my teammates, that they can win without me and do a lot of great things and trust each other.” Andrés Nocioni added 11 points for Sacramento, which has won all six home games so far this season. Luol Deng had 11 points, 15 rebounds and a season-high 5 steals in support of Rose and Hinrich. The Kings are now 6-1 in November and and defeated great teams like Atlanta and Houston, giving them a new credibility after last season's fiasco of 17 wins. “We believe we're a good team,” Nocioni said. “The naysayers say we're not. This wins mean a lot. I think it's a statement game. It shows we're serious and we're contenders for a playoff seed if we continue playing like this.” Sacramento held a 14-point lead coming onto the fourth quarter, and foul-plagued Hawes hit a pair of free throws with just over a minute left. Rookie Tyreke Evans hit a jumper in the final minute to put the Kings up to stay. It's clear the Kings won tonight but it's also clear that Rose won the "Battle of Memphis" against Evans, as the fans called it: Evans posted his first career double-double with 14 points and 11 assists but Rose posted 28 and 7 assists to lead the Bulls. They had a big hug before the game tipoff.
Martin hit a long jumper to put it 80-64 in the first minutes of the last period for Sacramento, but the Bulls posted a 18-5 run, featuring six straight layups to get back in the game and be down in the score by only 3 points: 85-82. “Those things are going to happen when you're on the road. Some shots are more friendly at home, I guess,” Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro joked. Kings coach Paul Westphal said: “We defeated the Bulls at their best. It's hard for me to say the Bulls had a bad game.” Also, Jerry Stackhouse played his first game with the Bulls after being signed two nights ago. “He really played well in the second half,” Del Negro said about Stackhouse, who had 7 points in 12 minutes in his debut. The Bulls outrebounded the Kings, 47-35. Tonight was Chicago's first stop of a six-game road trip, which now continues in Los Angeles to face the Lakers, Denver, Portland, Utah and Milwaukee, before returning home on December 2nd to play against Detroit. Sacramento now starts a three-game road trip of its own in Dallas, Houston and Memphis.
