Derek Fisher Came Up Big In Game Five25 April, 2010SEATTLE (AP) – After four blown out scores in four games, the Lakers-Stealth first round playoff series did not seem like it would get any more boring. However, fans of both teams finally got their money’s worth as the two teams produced the first close game of the series.
Veteran PG
Derek Fisher played his best game of the season when it mattered the most with his Lakers with their backs against the wall. Fisher scored 24 points and handed out 9 assists as LA avoided elimination. “It took a while for us to have a game that was not decided by halftime,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson quipped after the game.
Kobe Bryant led his side with 28 points and although
Andrew Bynum and
Pau Gasol did not have jaw dropping performances on the attacking end; the two of them were tough to crack whilst on defence. Gasol had 2 blocks and Bynum had 6; not to mention the ammount of times the two of them used their wingspan to divert their opponents’ shots.
“It was tough to score against Pau and Bynum,” Stealth PF
David Lee admitted, “They were a big reason why LA won tonight.” Lee finished with just 8 points and 5 rebounds, clearly frsutrated down the stretch when he could not get an open look anywhere near the hoop.
Kevin Durant led Seattle with 26 points.
In a spur of the moment move, Coach George Karl opted to start
Adam Morrison instead of
Jeff Green and
Reshawn Tyson. That move looked promising as Morrison opened the game with a three pointer from the top of the key before coming down on the next posession and scoring against Kobe. However, Morrison cooled down and was a non-factor for much of the second half in which Karl stubbornly refused to sit him out. Morrison ended up with 12 points while Green added 11. Tyson did not even get to step onto the floor after starting Game 4.
The game was close from the very beginning and neither team was able to gain the upper hand in the matchup. After leading for much of the middle two quarters, the Lakers suffered a lapse of concentration during the final period, allowing Seattle to grab their first lead since the end of the first quarter.
With Seattle in the lead late in the game, the Stealth did not want the Lakers to get any easy chances. Bryant was sent to the line at the end of two hard fouls, “I thought the guys who fouled me weren’t actually going for the ball.” He stayed composed though and hit all four of his free throws in a 30 second span. The result was the Lakers snatching back the lead from the Stealth with 1:30 left in the game.
Jeff Green scored a layup with 1:16 left putting Seattle ahead 96-95. That would be the last field goal that Seattle would score before Fisher converted a strong drive to the rim, Bryant stole the ball and dunked at the other end, and
Rodney Stuckey hit a wide open jumper with 24.1 seconds left to push the Lakers lead up to 5 points; 96-101. It was during that last minute of play where Kidd, Durant both missed three pointers and Andrew Bynum came away with two swats on David Lee.
The game’s outcome was set after Durant missed an easy bucket and gathered his won missed shot and was fouled. He had not missed a free throw all night and missed his first attempt. Although he made his second, the Stealth still trailed by 4 points with 20 seconds left. Seattle did not foul on the next possession and allowed the Lakers to dribble it out.
“There was no point,” Durant explained, “We’re ready to go to LA and win Game 6.”
“LA played better defence when it mattered,” Coach Karl said, “They kept things close and executed down the stretch. Now we’ve got to go to LA and finish them off there. We don’t want a seventh game even if it is at home.”
Notes: Morrison hit a three pointer at the end of the first quarter on the buzzer to put his team ahead by 2 points leading into the second quarter… This was the first time in the series that Seattle did not score at least 100 points. The team is averaging 109 ppg for the series. The Lakers are averaging 102 ppg but if you take out their Game 3 total of 141, that average drops to 92 ppg… Karl stated that Morrison would not start the next game but would not rule out if Green would be back in the starting five…
