SAN ANTONIO -- Before reaching EnergySolutions Arena for yesterday's game against the Utah Jazz, Tim Duncan was convinced that he would be able to play at least a couple of minutes against the Jazz. He instead watched the action unfold from the Spurs' bench. “I wanted to play at least a little, but Pop & the medical staff kept me out,” Duncan said. “It was a little frustrating, but I should be thankful for them for giving me the chance to recharge my batteries.” He won't be forced to watch the next game. After being rested for two days, Tim will return to the starting lineup tonight when the Spurs host the Cleveland Cavaliers. TD practiced with the team for about 30 minutes before running through a series of solo drills. Duncan's return certainly comes at a good time for San Antonio, as the team will try to post another winning streak after losing at Oklahoma City last Monday (108-85), and Wednesday against Chicago (108-98), then finally defeating Utah yesterday (90-75).
What's gone wrong? The Spurs, 7-4, have struggled to knock down shots and are 22nd in total points per game (93.8). Tiago Splitter found his game quickly in Duncan's absense, as he posted 16 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the floor, to go with eight rebounds and four blocks, 12 of those 16 points in the first half. He picked up two early fouls in the third quarter that prevented him from getting into a rhythm in the second half. “I could say I played my game,” Splitter said. “I got the ball early because of their frontcourt, who got into foul trouble. My own foul troubles have taken me out of a lot of games before.” Duncan's return will help even more, since defenses won't be able to focus solely on Splitter or Manu Ginobili, who had 18 points in 8-of-14 shots.
