Shocking news about 'Zo!

Postby The Big Racist on Tue Nov 25, 2003 3:30 am

East Rutherford, NJ, Nov. 24 -- New Jersey Nets center Alonzo Mourning will no longer be able to play professional basketball, effective November 24, 2003, due to an existing medical condition, Nets President/General Manager Rod Thorn announced today.

STATEMENT FROM DR. GERALD APPEL
Columbia University Medical Center
Kidney Specialist

Alonzo Mourning has had a kidney disease due to focal glomerulosclerosis for three years. Although through treatment he experienced a partial remission of the disease and was able to return to vigorous physical activity and playing professional basketball, in recent weeks, his kidney function has rapidly deteriorated. I, in consultation with team physicians, have concluded that it is no longer medically safe for him to play basketball. Although he still feels well, the chemical imbalances in his blood make it dangerous for him to play. Alonzo will need a kidney transplant in the near future to correct his progressive renal failure, and a nationwide search is currently underway to find a prospective donor.

   I aleady thought that he is recovering and can start in second part of the season..
The Nets are so screwed! They have only Jason Collins as a true center now...

I salute to 'Zo,He had a great career that was dismantled by a kidney desease,I wish him to get his new kidney and have a good life...

Would've been great to see Mourning in the all star game  . Anyways, best of luck to him and his family. Hope he gets a new kidney (Y).

(N), Very disappointing for the Nets, they expected quite a bit from Zo...hmm wonder if Martin feels good about his comments now  .

that really sucks, Nets are in big trouble this year considering how Detriot, New Orleans, and Indiana have been playing this year..why they got rid of Mutumbo and got nothing in return still puzzles me..
'Zo was a really player to watch especially vs. the Knicks in those good ol' Knicks vs. Heat games. Shame on Martin for making fun of his Kidney...now if Martin got the same disease that 'Zo has, I wonder how would he feel?

Zo was a warrior and an inspiration, it's a damn shame when bad things happen to good people. Good luck to him and his family.

Wow.. i just saw this on sportscentre. Fuck! Alonzo was such a competetor, but for him to come back with this just shows you how brave he is. I take my hat off to zo, I dont think i have more respect for a basketball player than him and that include MJ.

I'm a little surprised, but given the way his health has deterioated, I probably shouldn't be. Nevertheless, it's always sad to see sports stars (or anyone for that matter) forced out of doing what they love due to health problems.

Alonzo Mourning is tough, Kenyon Martin's words didn't cause him to retire. The fact that he needs a kidney replacement did.

The Nets are really screwed now. Not only do they lose out on Zo, but they have to pay $23 million over the next four years. And the kicker is that not only does that count against the cap, but they have to pay it because insurance won't pick it up since everyone knew about Zo's kidney problems beforehand. I'm expecting Kidd to demand Scott get fired or he get traded any day now.

Yeah, it's sad to see one of the last "real" centers from the 90's go... Only Shaq and Dikembe left. Zo is up there with Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson, even guys lke Luc Longley and Vlade.

I saw him in his first game back against The Raptors to open the season, everyone gave him a huge ovation that he deserved, that was just amazing, I will always remember that day.

We will remember you 'Zo!

Fucking hell!
man all the best big men are going!
there arent many great ones anymore.
David gone, now Zo, shaq has a lot of injuries and cant see him playing till 40 like he said.

this sucks for Zo, and i always liked Zo, one of the best competitors in the game ever, and always brought intensity with him ,which was great.
I like K-Mart, but if Zo retired coz of him, i will be pissed!
