Terry Porter new Headcoach of the Suns

Postby Alejandrov011 on Sun Jun 08, 2008 9:34 am

I just received an e-mail from the Suns so i checked and I found this...

"Today Suns General Manager and President of Basketball Operations Steve Kerr confirmed reports that Terry Porter will become Phoenix’s next head coach.

Porter, who has served as the Pistons’ lead assistant coach for the past two seasons, was also the former head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Porter was the last head coach to lead the Bucks into the postseason. "

It will be interesting to see what approach he takes with them, whether he'll still try to run or move away from the uptempo style altogether.

From that link:
In addition, it was believed that Kerr felt it was important to find a coach that possesed a balanced view of the game. The Suns desired a coach that put an equal amount of weight on offense as well as defense.

Thus far, Porter’s coaching career reflects just that. As the head coach in Milwaukee, the Bucks boasted the top scoring offense in the Eastern Conference. But as an assistant with the Pistons this past season, they were ranked the best defensive team in the league.

"He's a guy who is committed to uptempo basketball, which was important to us,” Kerr explained. “But he's also very experienced when it comes to defense, both from his time with the Pistons and as a player. He was a tenacious defensive player and he's very tough minded."

^I'd also love to have that one answered. I mean they could've gotten a helluva a lot more for Marion... Well, in terms of size you can't get any more than Shaq, but that's just a terrible joke that I'm using to take up precious space on the server.

Terry Porter wasn't too bad of a coach if I remember in Milwaukee. He had a decent season but then followed it up with a stinker, but I think he was given the boot unfairly like most coaches in the NBA.

Was anyone else interested in making a better offer for Marion though? I'm sure most teams would love to have him but they might not be willing to give up the player the Suns would want in return. His opt-out clause might have been an issue as well.

they saved marion for too long, should have unloaded him a year earlier if they wanted value for him. once it became pretty clear around the league that he was unhappy his stock dropped alot

I think Phoenix would be better right now without Shaq or Marion then where they are now.

There was an offer of Marion + Banks and someone else + picks for Garnett in the offseason

I prefered Garnett instead of Shaq... And if the trade happened i think that D'Antoni would still be the headcoach
