Malone did not deny that the kid is his. "It's too late to be your father" indicates that he is his father by blood, but it is "too late" to serve as a father figure in his life. So yes, I would say that he is his father.

He committed statutory rape. There are thousands of people incarcerated for the same thing.

And let's put aside the fact that he's a millionaire who should at least be there financially for his son, even if he hasn't been there otherwise.

It had been eighteen years since fathering the kid, it was too late to be the kids father.

The removal of "have to" makes it sound a lot less assholish.

There was clearly a decision on the Bell's part to not inform the kid and to keep Malone out of the picture.

Malone might have served jail time had her family asked the district attorney to file criminal charges.

They could have forced Malone to be involved, but they chose to keep him out of the kids life and not even tell him who his father was.

I believe that is Matthew's point about Malone's "side of the story" compared to the moralizing of this columnist who is taking out his own daddy issues on Malone.

Everybody wants to be judge, jury and executioner but maybe, just maybe, people shouldn't rush to judgment? Or maybe people shouldn't let their personal bias of a player ( MALONE THROWS ELBOWS WHEN HE PLAYS BASKETBALL, HE MUST BE A JERK! ARREST HIM!!! :X)

I once had a dream about meeting Karl Malone in Norway. We had coffee and he seemed like a nice guy. Told me that he that he would rather have played with Gary Payton than John Stockton, which I found a bit strange. But then again, it was only a dream.

It is possible the mother didn't tell the son to protect him. How do you know it's the mother's fault? It's possible that Malone's absence in Bell's life was Malone's fault because he wasn't there in his life? There's too many stories about the father running away and the mother stuck with the child. I can't fault the mother if she didn't tell him who the real father was, because it's not wrong to not tell him either.

If she didn't tell him, then how is it his fault for not being there?

And it's not wrong to not tell the father "hey you have a son"? Wow...

The side story that we might not know is that she might have been at a college party & all dolled up, so Malone might have thought she was 18 or thereabouts. So I wouldn't make any judgement on the statutory rape thing. Maybe that is why her parents didn't push for statutory rape, as she might have misled Malone.

Maybe when he said it to Bell, Karl Malone meant that the kid was now a grown man, he's got a college football scholarship, will get an college education & is on his way to his own life.

Although, all that being said, it would be nice to see Malone be a part of his son's life in the future, if that is how Bell wants it of course, which is not a given.
