Final 52 seconds of previous Heat-Hawks Game to be Replayed

Sat Jan 12, 2008 9:36 am

http://www.nba.com/news/protest_080111.html

Apparently, Shaq fouled out when that foul infact was only his fifth.

Editted for easier reading and Matthew's "approval".

Sorry what is this topic, about the raptors or the heat?

Sat Jan 12, 2008 9:59 am

For those who missed it (what caused Matthew's reply), I made a longer sidetrack to when the Raptors had two points missed against Atlanta in a game last season, where it ended up 97-93, and where was the replay to that.

Sat Jan 12, 2008 10:01 am

Even if they replayed that game and the heat won....will it make much of a difference for the worst team in the NBA? It's not like it would determine whether they had home court advantage in the playoffs or something.

Sat Jan 12, 2008 10:04 am

thats a silly mistake, you shouldnt see that at this level

Sat Jan 12, 2008 11:37 am

there only human though, the officials, and as for the technology it does have its times when it does falter and fail, think its been almost 25 years since a certain part in a game has got replayed actually.

Sat Jan 12, 2008 12:38 pm

Wow, what a stupid mistake.

Didn't everyone on the team protested that it was only Shaq's fifth foul? Or was it the scorekeeper's fault?

And what made the NBA give in and replay it? I have never seen a replayed game. Like the football game when the team got "5 downs" or Zidane's headbutt allegedly slipping from the gaze of the refs until the linesman looked at the instant replay on the screen.

Sat Jan 12, 2008 12:49 pm

Once again, read the article kids:
The Heat protested the game because, with 51.9 seconds remaining in overtime, the Hawks' scoring table personnel incorrectly disqualified the Heat's Shaquille O'Neal – asserting that a foul committed by O'Neal was his sixth foul of the game, when in fact it was only his fifth. The error occurred because the Hawks’ Official Scorer mistakenly attributed to O’Neal a foul at 3:24 remaining in the fourth period that was actually called against the Heat’s Udonis Haslem.

Sat Jan 12, 2008 12:54 pm

oh well, heat are doing good anyway.

Sat Jan 12, 2008 1:24 pm

What if shaq is still injured when they go to replay the finals 52 seconds? Plus without zo now, i think this is pretty stupid. There is no point in replaying it if shaq is not available, as that is the reason why they are going to replay it.

Don't blame me for you going way off track in the first post of your very own thread.

mistakes like this seem to happen more with officals than we proably ever realize, useally its nota so obvious things and not to obvious to the fans for the most part this onr that was more apperant. no in the nba, but in college and not a curisul moment in the game, but still mistakes happaen. in the womans college basketball around new years day Indiana played at naoerthwestern in the first half of srocekeeper made a mistake and even throw the sroce was like 15-20 points differance that moment toward the end of the 1 half, they called a fould on nu player, ok so fine, play o, but a couple minutes later and another ful later they found a mistake. this was wither called as the teams 7 of the half, when actully the previous foul was the actul 7, so they stoped the game, wnet throw all the fouls and fixed so this foul was number eight, so if you know the rules what happended to number 7, wiill with it really a meaningless situation they went back figured out who was fould for indiana, sent them back to free throw line for a one-on, without ny players on the lane lines, making up for miseed acoount of the foul number. she sank both, the reason it mattered was for error fixining, it didnt impact anything of importance to the game as the game was already as said like 20 points differance. the only issue with that is of coruse on the 7 in college is 1and 1, but didnt they techically futher breake the rule officatin by going back to the free throw line, and shooting like a techinal than as a o1 and 1. talking about officating issues. the only reason i think of they didnt do that was was the nature of the differance in the points differance at the time dindt matter how they got the free throw in, just so they got in the books. talk about officating. ive heard os things and seen some as a former coach myself, but never these tow. one the post starter and the one i just wrote.

That was hardly blaming. I'm just stating the fact that I went off on a tangent. I editted the first post and that was editted before another reply after yours appeared. Just stated that in case someone got confused by your post. If you're referring to the part about your "approval" in the first post, that was not complaining, but just messing around.

i think its a great thing actually. as it may not mean much to the heat i think its good to see the nba actually backing teams when errors happen during a game. now i only wish we could see the nba back a team when it was the refs that ruined a game for a team

They should be replaying the last 10 seconds of the '98 Finals. Replaying the last 50 seconds of a regular season game between two teams who aren't even contenders seems a bit silly to me.

hahaha

but thats going oto be really weird. Also, even though they are replaying it, the cirumstances are going to be sodifferent. Like since it was in overtime the players should be tired, which they won't when they redo it. Also what if someone was on fire in that game, and they start cold. Oh well, Heat will have been eliminated from playoffs by then..

That's the point! If the '98 Finals was overturned, it would be a huge scandal and the NBA would be to blame. But now, who cares if the Heat actually won? And the NBA can now say they replayed a game.

Thu Jan 17, 2008 12:36 am

It's probably going to feel a bit redundant for all involved if the result is the same (especially if Shaq ends up fouling out) and somewhat unfair for Atlanta if the game goes the other way since as far as the actions of the Hawks' players and coaches are concerned, they won the game fair and square. I agree with Sauru though, as odd a situation as it creates it's good that the NBA is investigating a matter like this and backing a team that has a legitimate grievance.

Thu Jan 17, 2008 12:17 pm

You know The Heat really need some young talent, maybe a young C and PG. This doesn't solve the Heat's problems, whether they end up on top or not. There is a way out, The Lottery.

Fri Jan 18, 2008 9:49 am

Well, short of a miracle turnaround that's where they're headed, but since the lottery still comes down to chance it's not really something they can plan for at this point. After all, how many teams have struggled (or tanked) their way to the worst record only to miss out on the top pick or drop as low as fourth? I'm sure Pat Riley would rather they compete hard until the latter stages of the season and if they're out of the hunt then, maybe rest or sit guys like Shaq and Wade if they're hurting and let the younger guys play out the final games of the season.

Mind you, Shaq looked pretty spry against the Bulls yesterday.

Fri Feb 08, 2008 2:01 am

I just remembered.. how does the Shaq trade affect this then? Will they still do the replay?

Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:26 am

if shaq was the one that fouled out, maybe they wont bother playing it

Fri Feb 08, 2008 8:17 am

There was few days ago news that it will be played with or without Shaq(before the trade) on 5 March, don´t remember where I read it.

Fri Feb 08, 2008 9:00 am

The ruling has been made to replay the final 52 seconds so that will still stand. It just becomes a bit of a joke seeing as though the player at the heart of the controversy won't actually be a part of the game but the mistake was made nevertheless so it would be unfair to turn around and suddenly declare it's not worth the do-over.
