Think of what the word "scamble" means and then think of what the word "scorer" means. It isn't that difficult of a concept to figure out. ;)

I'll put it in simpler terms.

Quis is excellent at slashing to the basket and scoring around 2-3 big men if a play is broken. Half our offense when Quis was healthy last year was "Shit, this play got fucked up because we run the most predictable offense in the league. Let's give the ball to Quis and let him score while we all stand around and watch him."

In all seriousness, there's no way to get from "scramble scorer" to that description - when the shot clock is below 10 a play doesn't turn into a "scramble." The only time I've heard the word used is when a bunch of guys dive to the floor for a loose ball.

I don't really care that much, but unintuitive made-up terms are hardly a basis for an argument.

Hmm, so you've never even heard the word scramble, yet you've heard it to describe a bunch of guys diving on the floor for a loose ball.

Scramble scorer is far from a made up term, as much as I would love to take credit for it. You'll hear commentators say it pretty often actually.

You didn't read my post carefully - that part wasn't directed at you anyway.

I have never ever heard an announcer say "scramble scorer," and if it were common don't you think it might show up somewhere on Google?

Anyway, I don't really support the Marquis Daniels bashing - he's decent. I saw so little of Jonathan Bender that there's no way I can formulate an informed opinion, but I always liked what I did see. I don't believe you can get a decent look at a player when he's stuck behind the likes of Jalen Rose and Jermaine O'Neal getting minimal minutes.

I wasn't even aware that "scamble" was a word

Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary wrote:
\Scam"ble\, v. i. [imp. & p. p. Scambled; p. pr. & vb. n. Scambling.] [Cf. OD. schampelen to deviate, to slip, schampen to go away, escape, slip, and E. scamper, shamble.] 1. To move awkwardly; to be shuffling, irregular, or unsteady; to sprawl; to shamble. ``Some scambling shifts.'' --Dr. H. More. ``A fine old hall, but a scambling house.'' --Evelyn.

2. To move about pushing and jostling; to be rude and turbulent; to scramble. ``The scambling and unquiet time did push it out of . . . question.'' --Shak

You really should brush up on the English Language BK

Sorry, I couldn't resist. My bad on the typo though.

That being said, while it isn't necessarily used in everyday sports vernacular, it isn't difficult to infer the meaning of "scramble scorer." In fact, it is a term I kind of like, and might use in the future.

I didn't say it wasn't a word, only that I've never heard of it - anyway, I imagine it's a rather obsolete word so I'll kindly reject your offer to "brush up on the English Language." (Why capitalize language?)

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

One of you needs to explain how the hell the word "scramble" relates to a play breaking down such that one player ends up clearing out a side and taking his man one-on-one. I absolutely do not see the connection.

While we're at it, let's petition EA to put Madden's "Weapon" system in NBA Live and make Marquis a "Scramble Scorer" - it's so fitting.

Anyways, I would imagine that scramble scorer is used to describe someone who is good at scoring after a play breaks down. Often times, when this happens, the defense relaxes for a second. Some guys are really good at seeing this and somehow manage to find themselves wide open for an easy bucket. I would call that a scramble score. Additionaly, some players are really good at turning a scramble for the ball into an easy lay-in or open shot. I would also consider this a scramble score. If you've played enough or watched enough basketball (not saying that you haven't) I would assume you would run across a scramble scorer here or there.

Some people take grammar and english way to far. :lame:

As Christopherson said, it's not that hard to figure out. I've never heard some say "Scramble scorer", but I have heard people say things like "He always finds a way to score on a scramble play", meaning the play has broken down yet the player still scores. It turns into a situation where a guy (who is usually a really good 1 on 1 player) uses his individual skills to just score off a broken play - playing without an offence and almost like he was playing pickup ball.

Once again, I've never ever heard someone talk about a scramble in basketball, except occasionally someone saying that a player is "scrambling to the ball." This discussion is absurd.

Does that mean because you have never heard of something it doesn't exist? What's so absurd about it?

If I have never heard a basketball announcer say anything about a "scramble scorer," it means there's a high likelihood that it is not in common usage, given that I watch a lot of basketball.

It's absurd simply because it involves one person inventing a totally incoherent term and several others hopping on the bandwagon, which is the exact opposite of what would normally be expected.

This is ridiculous. I can't believe you are getting offended because you haven't heard a term before. You admitted to not even knowing the word scramble, which is a pretty common word in the English language. Obviously if you hadn't heard of the word scramble, then you wouldn't have heard of the phrase scramble scorer.

I didn't invent the term, as much as you would love to find something to bash me about, try elsewhere.

Oh. My. God. Read the thread. One person already called me out on that already, which you apparently didn't notice/read - I told them to "read the frigging thread" as well. It's getting a bit tiring. If you aren't going to read my posts carefully, relate them to previous posts that I was addressing, and genuinely engross yourself in the conversation, why bother replying to them? These are basic forum skills - I absolutely never said I hadn't heard the word "scramble" before. If you quote the paragraph that you got that impression from without rereading it, then I'll have lost all motivation to continue with this discussion.

If you didn't invent the term, find me one instance of it being used outside this forum - I can't make it any more clear than that. I'm not trying to find something to bash you about - that's a total waste of my time. I just object to people making things up and others taking their word for it.

The only real thing here is the fact that you refuse to back down on your stance that I made up the phrase scramble scorer, which I did not.

One (many) specific examples of that phrase being used is by the Pacers color guy Quinn Buckner. He uses the phrase scramble scorer to describe Quis extremely often, to the point that it is way overused. Ask any Pacers fan who watches the Indianapolis brodcasts if they recognize the phrase, maybe its only us that have heard of it, but I don't think so.

Anyways, Greg Oden...

Wow, I can't believe it took me 15 minutes and a lot of reading to figure out who Quis was.

Anyway, as for Greg Oden, I really think this injury will help the Blazers organization a lot, aside from getting a high draft pick, judging Oden's work ethic, he will bounce back next season with determination, new post moves, better range and having a good reason to improve(proving the critics wrong).

He can operate within an offense, which means he wont hurt you, but he isnt good enough at anyone thing enough for it to be an asset. Versatile, jack-of-trades type of player, but does nothing great, or particularly good, IMO.

Slashers are a NICKEL a dozen.

Two very similar announcers.

I used to really hate Tommy a lot, but then I realized its just the Boston accent I hate. I really, really hate the Boston accent.

Yep, thats true, also he can train with the team, right? so in the upcoming season, Oden has some advantages over 08 season rookies.
If he gets healthy enough, then we know whos the next summers, summerleague mvp and season ROY.
David Robinson had similar way. Only thing was that he wasn`t injured, but he played in military for some reasons.

I really don't understand David's situation, I mean, what do you get for playing in the military anyway? And he signed up to be a soldier then came out a professional basketball player? A HoF player at that too, and there's a league for basketball-playing soldiers?
