Oden to undergo exploratory arthroscopic knee surgery

Portland Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today that rookie center Greg Oden will undergo exploratory arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday after experiencing pain in his right knee. Trail Blazers team physician Dr. Don Roberts will perform the surgery at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Wash.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) taken last week showed Oden may have some cartilage problems in the knee.

A timetable for Oden’s return will be set following the arthroscopic surgery.

I just hope its not that serious.

That sucks. I hope he won't be out forever, because I really would like to see him play.

Wow, almost every day I'm more and more glad the Sonics picked Kevin Durant. But, had they picked Oden they obviously would still have Ray Allen and possibly Rashard Lewis.

Just about the last thing the Blazers wanted to hear this offseason, Oden's NBA career hasn't really gotten off on the right foot with tonsilitis forcing him out of the summer league and now this possible setback with his knee.

Well once they actually start playing, every day will make you less and less glad.

We'll see about that Indy, We'll see. I would think the Blazers will have a better record, but of course they have a much, much more deep team than the Sonics.

I think well all know, though, that Robert Swift, now with forty more pounds of muscle and tattoos, will come back only to dominate Greg Oden.

For a year, then Oden will proceed to bounce back and make Swift his bitch for the next decade

Undoubtedly, Seattle's only hope for the season rides on the muscular, tattooed shoulders of Robert Swift. Watch, as opponents cower in fear at the sight of a buff, 7-foot ginger kid, his crazy hair obscuring their vision, leaving them helpless as he routinely drops 20 points.

Robert Swift for MVP.

No, Robert Swift for President.

No, no, no. Robert Swift = second coming of Christ.

You just watch. He'll turn the other team's Gatorade into to wine, and they'll all be piss-drunk by half time. That's how Seattle wins the title this year.

Remember, you heard it here first.

In all seriousness, I don't think the Sonics will regret having Kevin, and this year it will look great. Kevin will put up the numbers right away, because it is much easier for a player like him to make the transition.

Greg will hover around 13/8 but once that light really clicks in his head he'll be a 25/15 guy, and you'll wish you had that number 1 pick.

yeah after this season everyone is going to rave about durant saying how he should have been number 1, give it a few seasons before passing judgement. still it will be sad if oden is plagued with injuries and turns out just like bowie did, and the blazers again end up with a often injured center instead of a scoring machine(though durant needs to prove that still)

I strongly doubt that. There's been very few C's in the history of the league to put up those sort of numbers, especially in recent years. As good as he is, he's no Shaq/Hakeem/Robinson etc and they never did it.

You mean they never averaged that for a couple years in a row or their career? Shaq's numbers exceeded that during the Lakers title run I believe, and I'm pretty sure the other guys have done it at least for a season.

I don't think Oden will come close to it anyway, maybe 17/11.

No they never did.

To add to that...

The last person to do it (25/15) was Moses Malone in 1981 (even he didn't fully get there, but was close enough with 31/14.7). The only players to average over 15rpg since have been Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace who obviously weren't going to get the 25ppg.

Yeah, I was looking at playoff averages. So sue me.

NBA.com :cussing:

EDIT: Hakeem's 24.3 and 14.0 in '89-'90 counts! And don't even lecture me about your primitive rounding practices.

When you said "those sort of numbers," I wasn't assuming you meant points > 25 and rebounds > 15.

The point is still the same though. I said there's been very few to do it, and even less in recent years. Not that none of them had done it. By "those sort of numbers" I was referring to the excessively high rebounding AND points numbers. Hakeem, Shaq etc had all easily made the 25ppg but the rebounds weren't quite there. Hakeem's 24/14 does count.

Edit: Just to clear it up even more, by "they never did it" I was referring to 25/15+.

This could have been made so much simpler with "Lol, Oden won't score 25ppg".

If defenders could hand check, he might approach it. But the rules allowing guards to get to the rim at will make it an impossibility indeed.

Sorry literal police, didn't mean to walk in to your crime scene.

I know that wasn't funny, I don't care, i just rode a bike 30 miles.

What I really mean is that Greg will be a guy that puts up mid 20s numbers and leads the league in rebounding.

well now it seems oden is done for the season. this is probably not what the blazers had in mind when they took him first overall and changed thier team a bit for him. hey, maybe its a good thing, maybe next season we will see a oden/oj duo :D

He is done for at least 1 season but it is difficult to say if Oden will one day play in NBA !

Poor Blazers, 1st pick 1984 and now 2007 (let's see who was picked in 3rd position this year....)
