NBA Market Watch: KG to Boston
by: Eric Weiss
July 30, 2007
Multiple sources close to the situation told DraftExpress Sunday that the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves have come to terms on a trade exchanging Kevin Garnett for a package including Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, and Theo Ratliff. The exact details of the trade aren’t known at this point, but it is believed that the deal will be completed shortly with similar parameters.

The on-again, off-again deal with the Boston Celtics acquiring Kevin Garnett apparently is back on.
According to sources, the current deal on the table has the 6-foot-11 Garnett heading to Boston and the Celtics dealing away Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff's hefty expiring contract and Rajon Rondo. There may also be other players and draft picks involved.
It's not quite done, but three industry sources — including one close to the Celtics — told FOXSports.com that it's extremely close and could become official within the next 48 hours

When that rumor was first circulated awhile back, Garnett reportedly nixed the deal, saying he wouldn't re-sign with Boston. I wonder what changed.

So anyway I am playing a custom team (redrafted all of the modern NBA players) and I had the fifth pick overall.
But I didn't like the fact that my squad was a bit young. So I put on my GM suit and went to work.
After all was said and done...I came out with a DREAM starting 5 for any short-term franchisee.
C - Kendrick Perkins, 22yrs old
PF - Ryan Gomes ,24 yrs old
SF - Paul Pierce, 29 yrs old
SG - Ray Allen, 31 yrs old
PG - Kevin Garnett, 30 yrs old
Yeah, I let KG play his "natural" possition. Besides, this way he overpowers other PG's.
The problem with my team though is my bench, which consists of Brian Scalabrine, Leon Powe and other future NBA prospects.
But that all doesnt matter...I am still scratching my head...on why the computer let me have such a dominating and impressive starting 5.
I am good for the next 3 seasons at least with those 5. Then I can work on my bench in that time span.
Anyway, Im thinking of starting over because I feel real bad about what I did to a machine that does not take into account CURRENT VALUE.
Anyone else here feel bad about ripping off the computer?

Just remember, he said that before the draft, when all Boston had was Paul Pierce. Since then, the Celtics have acquired a perennial All Star in Ray Allen to go along with that young core. Now KG could go to Boston and replace a couple young role players and their starting power forward, which will look a whole lot more attractive to Kevin. In my opinion, it's Boston or no where. Golden State and Phoenix have the pieces, but they are in the Western Conference where wins are alot harder to come by. Chicago refused to give up Luol Deng in any deal, so the Bulls aren't in the running any more. He can either continue to lose in Minnesota, or go to an incredibly star studded team with a 3-4 year window of winning the championship.
Boston is the best place to go if he wants to win now.

I'm surprised the T'Wolves would rather have Rondo than Green. They already have Foye to play point, and Green could take over Ricky Davis' (supreme pimp) spot as starting SG. Plus, it is still conceivable that Telfair could become a serviceable PG, if he keeps his damn gun at home.
Rondo's a good player, but I wouldn't want him competing for minutes with Foye.

If Ratliff's contract is still in that deal, there wont be as much space as you might think.

Ok heres the deal, there will be a move made for either KG or JO but it won’t happen until August 3rd. Reason being Javaris Crittenton is being used a trade piece but because he was signed on July 3rd, there is a 30 day period where we cant move him.
OK so you have to remember, Lakers don’t want to trade KB24 so to appease him and the angry mob of Laker fans Buss will get the big ticket. KG or bust maybe?
This isn’t something that just sparked overnight. Buss started contacting Wolves owner Glen Taylor as earlier as last summer regarding KG. Buss promised Kobe a blockbuster that is why Kobe has shut up.
Wolves owner Glen Taylor is willing to trade KG, McHale is indifferent but he’ll be overruled. Just be patient. We’ve waited 3 years whats another few weeks.” — LakerLandFan24
This is all obviously speculation but a lot of fans have been saying August 3rd will be a special day in Lakers history. I guess the countdown begins to August 3rd!!!

Garnett agent in 'serious discussions'
By Shira Springer, Globe Staff
The Celtics and the Timberwolves could reach agreement on a deal that would bring Kevin Garnett to Boston as early as this afternoon, according to league sources. Executive director of basketball operations/GM Danny Ainge would send Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff and Sebastian Telfair to Minnesota in exchange for Garnett. But as of this morning, there still remained issues on the table to negotiate, not least of which is the player option worth $24 million that Garnett holds for the 2008-09 season.
When trade talks between Minnesota and Boston took place before this year’s draft, the option plus Garnett’s hesitancy to play in Boston, as relayed through his agent Andy Miller, were considerable sticking points. The Celtics did not want to part with Jefferson and his long-term potential if Garnett would stay in Boston for just one season. If Garnett agrees to take his player option as a condition of the trade, the Celtics also will likely look to come to reasonable terms on an extension as another condition of the deal.
“There are serious discussions in place,” said Miller this morning.
When asked about the option as well as Garnett’s willingness to play in Boston, Miller added: “Part of the discussion that is taking place is addressing those issues as well as others to see if the destination makes sense for all parties. Everything is part of the overall picture as to how to bring this to a conclusion or go in a different direction.”

Sources saying Garnett deal is done
Posted by Steve Bulpett at 12:06 pm
Sources this morning are confirming that the Celtics’ deal for Kevin Garnett is essentially completed.
One involved source said the final package will have the Celts sending Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a No. 1 pick to Minnesota to acquire Garnett.
Further word is that the Celts and Garnett have reached an agreement in principle on a contract extension. You may recall a report here that Danny Ainge would not do the deal without such a guarantee of Garnett’s presence, and it appears now that the perennial All-Star is willing to forego the opt-out in his current deal for next summer and cast his lot with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and the Celtics.

New twists in Garnett talks
By Shira Springer, Globe Staff
Kevin Garnett soon could become the newest member of the Celtics, multiple league sources said this afternoon but two of the sources cautioned that any trade may not be as imminent as some early reports indicated.
As the trade currently stands, the Celtics would send Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and two first-round picks to the Timberwolves for Garnett.
Al Jefferson is not included in the deal at the moment.
It is uncertain how the teams would deal with Garnett's trade clause that calls for a 15 percent salary increase.
As of this morning, there still remained issues on the table to negotiate, not the least of which is the player option worth $24 million that Garnett holds for the 2008-09 season.
