...FOR THE 2003 BASKETBALL ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

LIVE from Harbin! (Well...not really Live...)

Hi, my name is Will Sit and I am ur host for the recaps of the performance of Team China as they try to win gold in Asia and grasp hold of an Olympic Berth for Athens 2004...ok...I will cut the crap...

Basically I want to follow the Asian Games for one purpose....not to follow China (cause I know they will win) but to follow Yao Ming's development with his team and see what he can do on a team where he is the LEADER!

Also, this could be a hint on whether he will be awesome or great or just good for the Houston Rockets this season....So basiccally, this is a thread for Yao and Team China...not the Asian Championships as a whole!

If he gets the minutes and touches. The former depends on how much rest he can get. He's pretty much playing basketball all year round; at this rate, he'll be burned out pretty quickly.

Here is the result for China's first game.

They won easily beating Syria: 103-51

China's best players were SF Fangyu Zhu who scored 19 on 7/13 FG% and 5/10 3pt%. PF Ke Li scored 14 points (7/11 FG%), 7 boards and 2 assists.

TEAM SCORES PER QTR (10 minute Quarters)
CHINA VS. SYRIA
1st - 32 9
2nd - 22 19
3rd - 23 9
4th - 26 14

YAO WATCH:
Yao had a very good game considering the amount of minutes he played. In just 2 quarters, Yao scored 18 points on 7/9 FG and 4/6 FT. He added 12 boards, 3 assists and also an outstanding 5 out of China's 8 blocks of the game!

It seems to me that if Yao brings this game to the NBA...he'd do way better this season than last. Yao also had three dunks and from what I have heard of him he doesn't dunk much. This might mean he is also getting more aggressive in the game! :D

Another interesting Fact is that Yao played in the 1st and 3rd qtrs. In the quarters he played Team China won 55-18 but when Yao was on the bench they only won 48-33. This shows that Yao is very important for his team! Especially on D...hopefully Yao can bring this influence to his NBA team!

China: 1-0

Team China Defeated Taiwan in Game 2 of Round 1!

Beating Taiwan: 121-61, a record margin in Taiwan verse China Basketball History.

China's Best:
PF Du Feng scored 25 points in 27 minutes. SF Li Nan scored 11, and SF Zhufang Yu, PF Li Ke and SG Sun Jun all scored 10 points. These players made the total of double-figure scorers (Including Yao) to 6.

Yao Watch:
Yao had another awesome game where he dominated...in limited minutes. Yao Ming scored 29 points and grabbed 13 boards in another 2 quarter show.

This second performance makes me feel more positive about the chances of a Yao Ming Dominant Season...although I have to admit that Yao has always dominated in Chinese and Asian Comps before entering the NBA.

NOTE:
The reason why Mengke Bateer isn't being mentioned is because he is playing through injury. So when he does come back we'll get to see how he's doing and what he might provide to the Raptors this season!

China: 2-0 with one game left in Round 1

Last game of Round One

Iran is to be credited for ONLY losing to China by 24 points! The excuse why China only won by such a small margin is because they are pacing themselves for playing 8 games in 9 days.

Anyway, China's best players were:
-Li Nan (SF) scored 23 points in 30 minutes.
-Guo Shiquang (PG) scored 14 points in 24 minutes.
-Power Forwards, Du Feng and Li Ke each scored 9 points in shared game time at the same position.

YAO WATCH
Yao had a dissapointing game as compared to his past two performances. He did score 15 points in 20 minutes however.

His Scoring Average from Round One is 20.66ppg while leading China to a 3-0 record en route to the Second Round.

The Group which China competes in is Group AA
China (3-0)
Lebanon (3-0)
India (2-1)
Japan (2-1)

These four teams will be competing for a place in the Finals.

Game versing INDIA

China NT defeated...or more like decimated India...117-62!

All 12 players on the roster played as China recorded their 4th win in the competition bringing them to a PERFECT 4-0 record!

China's Best:
-Zhang Jinsong (SG) scored 17 points
-Du Feng (PF) and Li Ke (PF) both scored 12 points
-The lightly injured Mengke Bateer (C) scored 11 points
-Zhu Fangyu (SF) and Liu Wei (PG) scored 10 points each

It was a team effort with 7 players scoring in double-figures!

YAO WATCH
Yao had another balanced game scoring 14 points and 12 boards in less than 2 quarters of play.

Other Contenders
Other contenders for the Asian Championship gold is very liminted...in fact IMO I only see one team and that is Korea.

Korea beat China in the Asian Games last year....upsetting them by- I think it was two points! They are currently 4-0 winning with China-like margins.

Korea beat Iran 105-81
Korea beat India 121-76
Korea beat Kuwait 95-71
Korea beat Malaysia 103-72

Since they are in Group BB, unless they are beaten they are most likely to meet China in the Finals...and provide a bigger chellenge than most of the other Asian Teams would.

CHINA'S RECORD IS NOW A PERFECT 4-0 in THE COMPETITION AND 1-0 IN THE SECOND ROUND

man..... South Korea is pretty good in basketball... although other Asian countries are not that good anyways. and I thought South Korea was only good at soccer.
I also read in espn that there's this 7' South Korean high school kid who plays basketball... i dunno about him coming to NBA anytime soon though....

Great thread, will_k8 (Y)

As much as I would like to follow China and especially Yao Ming in the Asian Championships, I live in Canada so it's pretty difficult to do. Thanks to your good job, I'm updated pretty well.

I like the fact that China is trying to rest Yao as much as possible without sacrificing some valuable time on the floor. Hopefully, he'll carry his current momentum into the NBA season.

Your welcome Wangster! I take pride in following my home team and also my favourite team's star player!

China is getting better every year...I guess it will be a while before they come close to losing to America in single-digits-but hey...if China gets better point guards they might have a chance.

Anyway...I got more results to post but not enough time so i'll post them up tomorrow...BTW-Korea only won by 7 points today and they had to FIGHT to win...more details coming up!

China beat one of the Top four asian teams a few days ago...Lebanon who were supposed to pose a threat towards China.

Lebanon were still thrashed by the Chinese as Yao played more than 2 quarters. The score was 110-71...the margin smaller than other games- this is really showing that China's opposition is getting stronger but this will probably be as strong as it gets!

CHINA'S BEST
SF, Zhu Fangyu scored 20 points
PG, Guo Shiquang had 16
PF, Li Ke and SF; Li Nan scored 13 and 11, respectively

YAO WATCH
Yao Ming was allowed to play 35 minutes for two reasons. The Chinese coach said that the opposition was getting tougher...and also because there is a rest day before the Semis.

Yao scored 33 points and added 16 boards- a great performance! All I can say is that I can't wait to hear about Yao's play in the NBA this season.

KOREA STRUGGLE AS THEY PLAY A HARDER TEAM
As I had mentioned above, Lebenon, Korea and China were part of Asia's Top Four teams...the fourth is Qatar. Korea played Qatar and struggled in their game! This really shows that Korea must not be as strong as China.

Korea rallied against Qatar to stay unbeaten but only won by seven and only winning by beating Qatar in the last period! But we can only "sort of" compare China/Korea before the Finals, only by seeing how much China beats Qatar in their Semi on Tuesday. That should be today.

CHINA'S RECORD IS NOW 5-0

CHINA BLOWS OUT JAPAN!

China is into the the Asian Championships Semi-Finals....or I think it's safe enogh to say..."CHINA IS ON THEIR WAY TO DA FINALS! AND OLYMPICS!"

China beat Japan by 28 points in a 88-66 victory. China wasn't playing at their full potential only due to the fact that they had to rest for the two most important games of the comp!

All the players played well including Mengke Bateer who returned to action. He scored 17 and had 4 boards in 20 minutes of play. Small Forward Li Nan added 24 points in 29 minutes.

China will play the Semi-final versing Qatar today. They will also play the winner of the other Semi: Korea Vs. Lebanon

YAO WATCH
Yao Ming played 27 minutes and dominated...again. He scored 26 and pulled down 21 rebounds!

What I am hoping for is that China will let Yao play the full game in the Finals and the Semis. This might show how much Yao has improved after playing in the NBA. If he scores 50...he has gotten bettter!

ROUND TWO RESULTS
As Round Two of the Asian Championships draws to a close, the Top four teams are...China and Korea both with 3-0 (6-0 for the Tournament) records. Lebanon and Qatar both hold 2-1 (5-1) records, only losing their games to either China or Korea.

My tip is a Korea/China showdown and a Chinese victory!

GO YOU GOOD THINGS!

As the Asian Championships and the NBA Season comes closer...I'd like to talk about Yao Ming's chances of a Break-out Season. By what I have heard from his performance in games and his success at getting bulkier and stronger...chances are he may be a monster this season.

But, IMO...there are many factors which would contribute to Yao's success or failure in his NBA game.

Basically, If coach Van Gundy can make his players play how they should, the Rockets should be a very dangerous team- even in the West! That means for the Guards to pass to Yao when he's in the Key.

Another point that I'd like to make is that Yao need to become more of the focal point on attack. He needs to become more of a force in the paint and basically try to dominate like he does in Asia...even though that may take a while...

The Rocket's chances of a playoff berth, IMO, lays on Yao Ming's shoulders. If he plays good...and the Rockets are an extremely healthy team this NBA Season...they look like one of the better teams in the West!

Also, I would like ppl to discuss about Yao Ming and the Rockets cause this is one of the reasons why I strated this thread. Also thanks to the praise!

GO CHINA! (LET'S BEAT THE USA!) GO HOUSTON! YAO FOR MIP!

SEMI-FINAL

China beat Qatar by 25 points while Korea entered the Finals by winning in Overtime!

China won 86-61...relaxing a bit in the fourth quarter while looking forward to the final game of the Tournament. It was, again, a team effort as players shared game time at each position.

I won't go into full details of different players but....

YAO/MENGKE WATCH
Yao Ming and Mengke Bateer...both shared Game Time at centre. Yao played 23 minutes while Mengke played 17...hopefully in the Finals they can play Yao longer and hopefully Bateer at PF.

Yao Ming scored 16 and grabbed 6. Mengke had 9 and 6. Not very impressive butthe game was low-scoring compared to other China games and the players were "resting."

Wait to hear bout the Finals cause Yao may have a ripper game!

CHINA VS. KOREA
Korea only beat Lebanon 87-85 in overtime...China won by 40 points in their game versing Lebanon. This sort of shows that China is way stronger than Korea.

This is good for China cause it seems that they will beat Korea![/b]

All good news for China and Yao :D

I think the Rockets have a great chance of making the playoffs. Last year, they only missed by an inch. This year, Utah and Golden State are out of the running (basically), so the competition is lighter. If Yao has a reasonable season (my guess would be 18ppg,11rpg) and Francis consistently plays at the high standards he's capable of, and the role players step up throughout the season, and Van Gundy manages to build a effective game plan, there's no reason at all for the Rockets not to have a great season.

well... it seems that China has won the championship...

http://espn.go.com/oly/news/2003/1001/1627918.html

That game was delayed after both teams showed up in black uniforms shirts and neither would agree to change. They finally took the court after about one hour in distinct red and blue shirts.

its kinda ludicrous that the game was delayed for an hour because neither team wanted to change their jersey color.... fighting like little kids.... ("no i wore this color first, so u change it...." "NO, i wore it first... " "no i did.......")

Yeah...It was Qatar and Lebanon...but I don't know why you would fight about the fact tht you didn't want to switch jersey colors...that's just gay!

Anyway...if you don't know yet...China won and their off to Athens! (GO CHINA...BEAT AMERICA- GO YOU GOOD THINGS!) Yao had 30 points and 15 boards- clearly dominated!

So to me it looks like Yao will join Rockets for Preseason and best wishes to him! For a breakout season! :)

And about the uniforms, I'm really surprised adult professionals had that kind of trouble. I mean, there were several times my high school team hosted another team with the same colour but we promptly switched our jerseys with no hassle. If high school students can do this, why can't professional athletes?
