I think Sarver is just trying to save money. He has pretty much shown that making a profit is more important than winning a championship, and as long as Nash has the team being competitive and fun to watch each year, they're bring in tons of fans. From a money perspective, who needs a championship banner?

yes, you might be right....but from a history perspective, if you win titles & create some sort of legacy, you gain fans over generations, not just while Nash is running the show....look how many fans the Bulls have, mostly due the Jordan era....same with Celtics, Lakers, etc....of course, they are bigger markets, so maybe that has something to do with that....

hey, I'm a bean counter, it's an honourable profession (for the most part) :P

I guess the Suns don't consider Kurt Thomas the type of player that will get them over the hump, so rather than pay tax for a player they don't believe will get it done, they'll save their money....of course, they could've got a better trade, but ahh well....

Me neither, but I'm certainly not complaining. Who knows what kind of players those picks could yield. They're certainly likely to yield a productive player at the very least.

In the last three years, the Suns have had an average 1st round pick of 22. The players drafted at 22 in the last five years (not including 07):

2002 - Casey Jacobsen
2003 - Zoran Planinic
2004 - Viktor Khryapa
2005 - Jarrett Jack
2006 - Marcus Williams

Aside from Casey Jacobsen and perhaps Zoran Planinic, those are certainly productive players. I'd say Planinic is a productive player as well, he just didn't have a spot in New Jersey. They certainly have a good chance to gain a good player from those picks. Some of the other guys picked after 22 in the last five years have certainly faired well... (Tayshaun Prince (02 - #23), David Lee (05 - #30), Kevin Martin (04 - #26), Leandro Barbosa (03 - #28), Josh Howard (03 - #29), Nenad Krstic (02 - #24).

And who knows how this year's 22 pick, Jared Dudley, will turn out, or Phoenix's pick, Sergio Rodriguez. I think this is as big as steal as any this off season or perhaps in the last two years.

Suns should know better than anyone what a late 1st round pick can yield. Leandro was a 28th pick.

If you trade one of your toughest inside players for two future first-round picks you won't have good rookies when you need them years later (to rebuild). Suns' "empire" is starting to disappear.

neither do I....usually teams throw in two 2nd rounders, not 1st rounders....if you're going to throw in a 1st rounder or two, then give up a bad contract in the process, like Marcus Banks, & maybe take a Swift or Petro or Sene off Sonics' hands (whoever they don't think will last)....ahh well....the jury's out on Kerr so far, but I guess he's got his orders from above....a shame though....

if teams managed their caps better (i.e. not giving Rashard Lewis ridiculous money & giving guys like Kapono MLE) then it wouldn't happen as much....I think luxury tax is good for the league....it's not like it sets in the moment you go over cap either, so it's not too bad....

That's true, teams have to live with their own blunders and the fact that it there's a bit of breathing room between the salary cap and luxury tax threshold doesn't make it a widespread problem. All the same, the Suns don't have any Lewis-like deals on the payroll yet they were forced into a cost cutting deal.
