i believe this kind of things happen in boxing and a lot of other sports as well
even in hockey there were rumors that games were fixed so sum ppl could get richer
i think in every sports there r dirty behind stories that we'll never get to know
for instance, mlb league has been ignoring players hooked up on steroids
simply they didn't care cuz they could make more money with players performing at higher level
reality bites
anyways, i wish they ban those motherfucking refs forever from officiating anywhere

The only one paying NBA refs to "fix games" is David Stern.
Somebody kick Otis Smith's nuts please.

I wonder who the referee is. Likely it's a ref who makes ridiculous calls to shave points. Think he'd be connected to Dwayne Wade during the Dallas-Miami series?

Joey Crawford comes to mind.

Edit: There's already a website up: http://whichref.com/

Joey "You Wanna Fight?" Crawford seems like a likely candidate

not really a big shock to me. countless times in the nba i have seen games blown cause of the refs, lakers-kings comes to mind instantly and the entire miami/dallas series. the problem is the nba is doing nothing to stop it, nothing at all, which makes me believe that the nba is in on it also.

Well, turns out the culprit is Tim Donaghy, a 13 year veteran.

i think its obvious that some refs and making some really bad calls than a 4 year old can make. the fact that the nba does nothing about this, nothing at all to me shows they are in on it or like the result that it produced. either way they are just as much to blame imo as the refs doing it even if they are not involved. kinda like if a boss lets his employee waste 6 hours a day, he is also to blame for that employee.

i seem to remember lebron getting fouled during a 3 point attempt (game 2 of the finals? i cant recall which game) and there being no call. the game could have been tied, or won at that point for the CAVS, but instead the SPURS won. i wonder if this might be part of what the FBI is investigating? the refs did seem to take sides in that series....

i think there should be a challenge rule, kinda like in the NFL... where a coach can argue a call and have the play reviewed. obviously, it could only be used a limited amount of times... but it would help i think.

Has to be linked to the mavs heat series, im sorry but Wade was getting any call he wanted. Jason terry just looks at wade and got called for a foul.

Player FTM-FTA - Refs for that game.
Wade 21-25 - #17 Joe Crawford , #14 Joe DeRosa , #15 Bennett Salvatore
Wade 16-21 - #43 Dan Crawford , #29 Steve Javie , #32 Eddie F. Rush
Wade 13-18 - #43 Dan Crawford , #41 Ken Mauer , #35 Jack Nies
Wade 11-14 - #26 Bob Delaney , #29 Steve Javie , #32 Eddie F. Rush
Wade 6-10 - #17 Joe Crawford , #14 Joe DeRosa , #15 Bennett Salvatore
Wade 8-9 - #27 Dick Bavetta , #24 Mike Callahan , #7 Bernie Fryer

hmmmm maybe it was just bad officiating?

Donaghy stepped down as a ref. He was suspected of betting on matches and making calls that will make him win the bets.

Since Donaghy wasn't in any one of those games, it was just bad officiating.

I just want to see where this new piece of crap business ends up.

Its highly unlikely that any of you could remember an occurance when this guy made a call to shave points. I highly doubt he had any effect on who won or who lost a game, rather the effect he had was whether a team won by 6 points or 8 points. I also highly doubt it happened at any playoff game or even a nationaly televised game. I would guess we are talking about a couple doubious foul calls during a minisotta-miluakee game in march or something like that. If you are trying not to get cought, you dont do it with the spotlight on you.

Christopherson's theory is probably correct...
The allegations are that Donaghy bet on games that he officiated over the past two seasons and made calls that could have affected the point spread in those games, according to ESPN.

Of course, it's ESPN, so the source is suspect.

Still. Who's to say he's betting on the games he was the referee in? What if he overhears other refs planning to fix a game and bets on that?

If the FBI is investigating, it has to be something fairly serious right? It has to go beyond looking up what games he bet on, then watching the tapes to see if he did something blatant that couldn't be argued.

What about the possibility he has been targeted as someone who will plea bargain to provide testimony against other referees? What if he was just the stupidest of the referees and easiest to catch?

One of the ways point shavers attempted to thwart lawmakers in the past was by trading. You'd shave points in your game for someone else, who did the same for you in their game. And of course you always did it on the meaingless games, they are the easiest ones to do it on.

What I heard was that Donaghy was working in cahorts with the mob. The way it worked was Donaghy was in money trouble and went to the mob. To repay his debts the mob had him shave points. You see, the mob controls the bookies, who sent the lines for each game. If they see a game where lots of people are taking the over, or vice versa, they let Donaghy know what needs to be done to ensure that most people lose their bets, thus losing their money to the mob.

I dont care how much trouble youre in. You dont go to the frikkin mob. If thats the case I have no sympathy for him at all. Actually hope hes getting worked over by Paulie the Hammer right now. Thats all the league needed right now. Make a concerted effort to "clean up" the league image, only to find out the refs are shaving points. Fan-F8cking-tabulous.
