Chauncey re-signs with Detroit

Wed Jul 04, 2007 7:17 am

Pistons flagship radio reports that Chauncey Billups has re-signed with the Pistons for 5 years/60 million. The 5th year will be either a team or player option, once they work that out, the deal will be officially announced.

This means Mo probably stays in Milwaukee. Steve Blake is going to get a big contract this year, mark my words.

Good deal for both sides, a rarity.

I believe you on Blake.

Blake will either stay in Denver or go to Portland where he has a house. If he doesn't sign with Nuggets I don't mind; Von Wafer can be our main PG at the end of summer league. If Blake signs with Portland, he'll share time with Jarret Jack.

5 years?!

How old is Billups now? 30? 31? He'll be 35-36 by the time the deal is done. And for 12 million/year?

espn is reporting that his agent is denying that any agreement has been reached

The agent "viciously" denies it. So it sounds like Billups is still interested in the open market.

my thoughts are, he wants someone to offer him more, then he can take it to the pistons and say match it or i walk.

i agree with that, if he hasnt really signed a deal he should only be looking for a 2-3 year deal, at least detroit should be, then another potential player is stuck to the bench

I think this was a scheme by the Billups people. They leaked this info to give teams an idea of what a low-ball of chauncey is. They are looking for a max deal, and if they "Viscously Deny" this, then it makes it seem like they are out for more and sends a message to the other teams.

If no other teams are going to offer him a max contract, I don't see why the Pistons should. 60 mil over 5 years is a pretty good price for Chauncey, but if nobody else is throwing out bigger offers, why not force him to accept less? I'd be pretty dissatisfied if they gave him more than what this deal was rumored to be...

yeah they want a max, he is not worth a max, but whatever, in a nba where lewis is worth 15 mil a year then i guess billups is also. personally both will be over paid, max contracts should really only go to the top players which neither are.

Problem is no other team has big money to throw around without sign and trades. Only the Bucks, Orlando and Charlotte can afford anything over the MLE without hitting luxury tax. That means Billups, Darko, Wallace and Mo Williams have to either take short term deals for the MLE, get a S&T or join one of the above teams.

I'm hoping the Bucks are going to offer Billups a 5year/$61million deal, in the hope of either landing him or putting the Pistons under further financial pressure.

The Bucks can afford this deal and retain Bell and Ilyasova. Also, this would a good incentive to get Yi to sign, as it shows the Bucks are serious about winning, and winning now. Landing a big FA would be the kick up the arse this franchise needs to turn around and get back to heading in a positive direction.

Billups would give the bucks the best shot, im not convinced that Mo would be a major player in taking this team to a higher place. If we can sign Billups over Mo i think that takes us from a playoff team, to a team who can maybe get to the finals. Personally i dont like Charlie V and Simmons, too bad we cant trade them for pieces that work. Sign and trade for Gerald Wallace, and or Mo Pete.

Billups' agent didn't "viciously deny" he called the rumor that Billups signed "vicious." Which is one of the stupidest and funniest things in a short while...

I guess Miller wasn't vicious enough. According to ESPN, Billups have reached a deal with the Pistons, and at almost the same price, too.
