good catch, in fact eng aint my primary lang :P

what i meant by overachieving was how he took the warriors to the playoffs & past the mavs when almost everyone counted em out. and like shannon said, if he was considered the next mvp pg during prime yrs of kidd, then i guess i should admit he was overrated.

this is the important part, quite possibly the worst defender in the NBA.

Nah, nah. Not anymore. Think about guys like Al Harrington, Eddy Curry, Mike Miller, Gerald Green.

Hollinger's underrated identifiers:
-Shoots a high percentage
-Rarely dunks or make spectacular plays
-Converts a lot of three pointers
-Gets to the line more than average
-Passes well
-Committs very few turnovers
-Rebounds well for his position
-Plays good defense
-Doesn't block many shots
-Plays fewer minutes than average due to a crowd at his position
-Was never a high draft pick or attention-getting free agent
-Likely plays in a small market
-Team is likely a non-contender
-Possibly multiple pro-teams in he city

Overrated identifiers:
-High scoring average
-Low rebound rate
-Poor passer
-Turnover prone
-Poor defender, but gets blocks and steals
-Plays in a big market/popular team
-In the news fairly often
-Low percentage shooter
-Dunks and makes other spectacular plays
-Doesn't get to the line very often
-Doesn't make many three pointers
-Plays quite a few minutes, padding his per game stats

In 2003, he was of course finding Michael Redd and Latrell Sprewell to have most of the identifiers in the respective categories.

A lot of "overrated" guys are probably players like say Ben Wallace, who no longer deserve some of accolades they're still getting. But they're still good players, or at least useful ones, just not stars.

Some underrated: David Lee, Chuck Hayes, Brent Barry, Jose Calderon, Josh Childress, (two years ago: Sam Cassell)
Some overrated: Eddy Curry, Al Harrington, Josh Smith, Raymond Felton, Eric Snow, (two years ago: Marko Jaric)

Silas wrote:It could be argued that Ben Wallace yields positive results as well, but the Bulls have so many other good players and solid defenders, I'd bet that they could have achieved similar results with a much cheaper low post defender, such as Tyson Chandler, Kurt Thomas, Rasho Nesterovic, Etan Thomas, or Brenden Haywood.

what good/soild frontcourt players did the bulls have before the season started last year?
let's see. you can choose from:
PJ Brown
Sweetney
Malik allen
khryapa
Tyrus Thomas
and that skinny martynas dude who was punched

Tyson Chanlder salary is starting at $10 mil. hardly cheap. never mind that puss would never succeed in chicago

did kurt thomas even play a quarter of the season last year? is rasho even in the NBA still lol?

maybe if you combine etan/haywood- you'd have a decent fill in but you wouldn't have the fights during practice anymore

the bulls wouldnt have sniffed 49 wins with any of those players you mentioned.

Wallace doesn't give you the raw stats a $15.5 mil salaried player should but hey let's not get silly
Jump.

Ben Wallace was overrated when he played for Detroit. Last year in Chicago he became underrated.

Funny how that happens.

Melo is 1 of the best scorers in the NBA.... Within 21 feet of the basket.. he is unstoppable, he has a great post up game, quick first step, finishes strong, great mid range game.
Hence he avged 30ppg when he was team's first option.. he shot a high % as well..

His def is not good, avg at best.. I dont' think he is as super-star like as Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Duncan...

I believe he missed the all-star team, for a few years..

Definately not overrated, no 1 puts him in the line of the best in the NBA..

Overrated? Rashard Lewis compare to his contract? I mean, a lot of other players decline after their big contract therefore it is a waste.. but Rashard's best doesn't justify for nearly 20 million a year....

But as Indy said, overrated and overpaid are two different things. I suppose you could say that placing that value on Lewis' skills is overrating him but it's not as though he's widely heralded as being better than he really is, which I believe is the point you were making about Carmelo Anthony. Melo is not without his own shortcomings but outside of diehard fans there's not a lot of people who tout him as being the best player in the league.

ever since orlando lost shaq they have been over paying players. this is a stupid contract that will doom orlando to be in the middle of the pack for several years at which point they will be back to the lottery.
