Why no one cares about the finals

Fri Jun 15, 2007 1:58 pm

Just for something different, I completely agree with Bill Simmons...

Reads this article on the finals, and then just for proof that once again, he is right, check out the realgm front page.

Minutes after Spurs win THE FINALS, they aren't even the biggest story of the day...

The Entertaining-as-Hell tournament would be, well... entertaining-as-hell. As with most things in the world though, it is too logical to every be implemented.

Fri Jun 15, 2007 2:02 pm

haha its no surprise i guess that spurs won

Fri Jun 15, 2007 2:05 pm

the Spurs didn't even look excited.

Fri Jun 15, 2007 2:13 pm

Great read... and completely true in all regards.

David Stern is much too big of an idiot to do something like this.

It had a few weeks to sink in... Once they beat Utah they were already planning the design of the ring

Fri Jun 15, 2007 4:56 pm

i think you mean once they beat Phx?

Fri Jun 15, 2007 5:05 pm

No...
They were still drunk from celebrations after the Phoenix series. Thats why they lost a game in Utah...

They had to get over their hangovers before they could start designing anything

Fri Jun 15, 2007 6:14 pm

for people who don't care about the finals, you sure do post a lot about it.

Fri Jun 15, 2007 6:25 pm

Look on the bright side, boring teams breed less bandwagoners.

Fri Jun 15, 2007 6:41 pm

I'm glad they won, after LA was knocked out, how can you not root for the Big Fundamental?

Fri Jun 15, 2007 8:08 pm

I cared about the Finals as much as the first round matchup of Spurs and Nuggets...

Which is a better team? Nuggets or Cavs?
Camby
Nene
Melo
Iverson
Blake
Kleiza
Smith
Najera

Big Z
Gooden
Lebron
Sasha
Larry Hughes
Andy
Gibson
Snow
Marshall

Pretty close i would say...
I don't think ppl follow that series that much...

In fact, I can see one reason why this would never happen, and only one: if David Stern and the rest of the NBA decision-makers were too stubborn to admit that we need a radical change. Well, we do. Anyone who doesn't believe this should be sentenced to watch the game-deciding play of Game 3 -- you know, the one during which Anderson Varejao thought it was a good idea to attempt an out-of-control spin move against one of the best defensive players of the past 15 years -- on an endless loop for the rest of the summer. Cleveland had no business being in the 2007 Finals. None. That's why I'm one of the 19 biggest basketball fans on the planet and, yet, I care more about the 2007 draft than the 2007 Finals.

That's what I don't like about Bill Simmons. I mean, it's great that he sticks to his point of view of all but I hate that he adopts the "I'm right and if you don't agree with me, you're not a true fan/you're an ignorant moron" stance. That seems to be a common theme with ESPN writers though; Jemele Hill's Kobe vs Jordan article a couple of months back springs to mind.

Maybe I am too stubborn to admit the "truth", but I still agree with what Dan Wetzel wrote. This year's Playoffs followed almost exactly the same format as last year's, the only difference being the change in seeding teams one through four to prevent a matchup like Spurs/Mavs taking place in the second round. I don't remember much talk about the 2006 Playoffs being a snorefest, nor the 2005 Playoffs being similarly panned. As Wetzel said, sometimes it just works out the way it has this year.

It just seems that whenever something doesn't work out as planned, there's suddenly a huge problem that needs to be fixed immediately. If David Stern adopted that line of thinking, the playoff format would change annually which would be ridiculous.

Well said. Whenever people are bitter that their team didn't make it to the Finals, that a "boring" team (a.k.a not the Warriors) did, and that there was an apparent imbalance in the Finals, then everything needs to be changed, Stern needs to resign, the playoff format needs to be altered to make things more "fair" for the East,....
That's bullshit. People need to stop whining and accept that one team was simply better than any other, they ended up against a less experienced team this year, but it's not like this kind of situation has been happening every year. If it had, there would have been more sweeps in the past 10-15 years.

Exactly. And I, for one, am sick and tired of "fans" calling the Spurs boring. I always hear folks complain about the lack of team play in the NBA. Well, the Spurs exemplify old-school team ball, yet they get hated on. I'd rather watch SA over Phoenix any day.

Personally I find most, if not all, of his suggestions to be totally logical. I agree with nearly everything he says (and its usually comedic too...)
The way he argues it doesnt affect me, since I agree with his suggestions in the first place.

Are you implying people in general gave a shit about the finals? Was there actually anyone aside from one-eyes cleveland supporters who thought that they stood a chance?

It doesnt matter whether their team isnt in the finals, as far as I am aware (at least me, anyway) all people want are close games in the finals, with a close series.
An obvious slaughtering is not what I would call close series.

Well, I personally expected Cleveland to come out with at least one or two wins in these series. But James absolutely chocked, and without him playing well Cleveland is just without a chance, even though they were close in the home games.

Speaking about the subject, this is just common to the NBA basketball - fans praise offensive minded, fast paced competetive games. While teams like San Antonio are based on defense and discipline, and, as it shows, this is the right way to play, unless you got 2-3 hall of famers on a team.

Realgm is not a news source, it's specifically a forum for tons of people to discuss rumors & trades so of course trade talks are going to dominate their front page.

The front of page ESPN's NBA section is Tony Parker & Duncan, and will be for all major news media.

Simmons has just been pissy because Boston couldn't get Oden or Durant by tanking this year, so he thinks all NBA rules should be changed. He was much happier about the NBA pre-lottery.

good point...

Not really, hes been bitching about the state of the NBA for a long time
You just have to go through one or 2 pages of his archives to find about 6 articles...

The Spurs are boring.

I think I'd rather watch the US Open.

Sat Jun 16, 2007 9:52 pm

Good for you, the rest of us basketball fans make do watching them, instead of another sport.

Sat Jun 16, 2007 10:37 pm

i dont think its that the teams are "boring", i think the reason why no one seems to care is todays nba is pushing fans away. all todays nba cares about is drawing in the youth while at the same time they are killing off thier fan base of men over the age of 30. growing up in boston basketball was huge, but even with bird and all that, it still never topped the red sox or patriots(who sucked forever). now in boston you ask anyone over 30 about the celtics they reply with (they suck and i dont care about basketball anyway. the entire sport sucks). i really wish more teams like the spurs, minus the lame ass flopping like a bunch of girls, would be formed in the nba. teams who know fundementals and how to win games.

Sauru wrote:i really wish more teams like the spurs, minus the lame ass flopping like a bunch of girls, would be formed in the nba. teams who know fundementals and how to win games.

For that, you need smart, front-office people who know how to build a winning team.

Sat Jun 16, 2007 10:59 pm

Jeffx, yeah i agree with you. The problem is that most NBA front offices are morons (Kuptchak LAL, B. Knight ATL etc.) So I don't think anything will change soon except SAS probably winning it again. And you Axel, if you think the Spurs are boring then you don't know how to play basketball at all. San Antonio's been consistent for 9 years for God's sake and all they do is win and you call them boring? What kind of mind do you have? Maybe winning with teamwork is boring nowadays. Maybe one man shows and acrobatics entices you to watch (Kobe, VC, DWade) but c'mon man do you pick these guys on your team instead of Tim Duncan and his efficient approach to the game? What the hell is happening. Enough of this SA is boring crap. Just accept that TEAMS and DEFENSE wins championships, not OFFENSE and silly INDIVIDUALS. Remember Jordan did not always do it by himself, he needed teammates to help him.

Sat Jun 16, 2007 11:38 pm

The Spurs are "boring" because they don't play Phoenix "And1" basketball and actually play defense. I have never understood how people find teams like Phoenix and Washington etc exciting teams , to me I will watch the game regardless of the team playing and enjoy it as long as it is a close , competitive game.

The only thing that is "boring" in the NBA is blowouts , Game 2 was so bad I nearly fell asleep on the couch. Games 3 and 4 remained relatively close , so I couldn't say those were boring.

Sun Jun 17, 2007 12:35 am

What is boring, is everyone saying Spurs aren't boring.

Everyone here is arguing the same point, get over it.
