Pistons Give Up On Delfino, Traded To Toronto

(June 15, 2007) -- The Toronto Raptors announced Friday they have acquired guard Carlos Delfino from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2009 and 2011.

I dunno, but I have a weird feeling this will be another one of those Colangelo genius type moves. They give up essentially nothing and get another international player, this time one that fills a need. I wouldn't be suprised to see Delfino have a breakout year for the Raptors.

Good move by the Colangelo, again.

Great trade for Toronto.

Shannon, why are you always the first to pounce on trade news?

He's naturally good? I dunno.

That's a pretty smart trade, you don't see many second-rounders come out to be steals, so it may pay off.

I'm not so sure I understand why Dumars decided to do this...

Although Delfino isn't that great of a player, he's still pretty young and could develop into a pretty good 6th man off the bench. Joe D must have something up his sleeve, I just don't understand why he would give Delfino away for next to nothing. Perhaps these picks will be packaged into another deal in the near future...

Man, Colangelo is a genius. Delfino was VERY underused and underrated in Detroit. Anyone who's seen him play for Argentina in Olympics/WC knows he's better than treated in Detroit. Toronto's international flavor: Calderon, Garbo, Slokar, Rasho, Delfino, Bargnani..And Parker played about 7 years in Maccabi.. Interesting (Y) .

Works for the Pistons.

Without this trade, Pistons pay Delfino next year and then he just walks. This way Dumars doesn't pay him next year & gets a 2nd round draft pick.

I think it's good for all parties involved, Delfino can try to make an impact on a young team, Pistons are trying to make sure they can pay all their veterans.

Yeah, but it's not like Delfino was making good money...

I'm not really suprised, but I'm giddy as hell about Delfino's athleticism that he brings to the table. His slashing ability should compliment guys like Bargnani, Parker and Bosh who tend to play in the perimeter more than the inside.

I kind of wonder where he'll find minutes though, the SF spot on the Raptors is kind of full at the moment, although this also might mean that Peterson is going somewhere else and/or Colangelo has given up on Graham.

I don't really know how this makes Colangelo a genius. I bet Detroit called and offered this trade because something else is brewing in D-Town. Doesn't take Einstein to say "Yes".

^I'd say that the Pistons are going to try and land a wing player like Delfino through the draft.

I'm pretty annoyed with this move yeh fair enough Delfino had showed nothing to date but i have a feeling he had plenty to bring to the NBA and in general Detroit for future years. Although i understand this move by Detroit Considering most likely we will sign Billups which mean at guard we will have Billups/Hamilton/Murray/Blalock and then in the draft it is likely we will pick up Javaris C, A.C Law or Rodney Stuckey in the draft three ofensive oriented players that have ok potential in the NBA aswell as this at 27 we could pcik up, Affalo, Brooks or Tucker, three players which i really like the look and sound of so overall Delfino probably would've went soon anyway or been involved in the offence very little so to get two future 2nd round picks and relieve a tiny bit of Cash i guess it's ok as a Pistons fan. On Toronto's side great move by them, filling a position which needed to be filled and overall "stealing" a decent Player or what looks like someone who could be a decent Player. (Y)

I'm not convinced that it needed to be filled, Delfino has also been playing SG quite often, and if they stay, he'd have to compete with Parker, Dixon, Peterson, Graham, L.Jackson...I'm pretty sure one or two of them will leave Toronto this summer, but still...

Then again it is likely that we see Delfino be able to play SG and PG. Regarding there being so many SG's; I think Graham and Peterson are two guys which should stay at SF, Luke jackson not as good as delfino IMO. So really the guys are Parker/Dixon/Delfion at SG then at PG Ford/Delfino/Calderon. Also they lose near to nothing so i still stand by my, you rarely see good players come out of a second pick and with the potential that Delfino has he could be a great accusation (Y)

Peterson has silently become disgruntled at his lack of playing time and with Sam Mitchell, so he'll probably elect to sign somewhere else.

Dixon is effective in spurts, but I'm guessing the Raptors are keeping him more as contract bait rather than for his skills.

Graham has once again shown flashes that he could play this season, but was absolute garbage in the playoffs at both ends of the floor and reverted to his old timid self. I won't be suprised if Colangelo ships him off somewhere for late first rounder even.

Luke Jackson... Well, he was a welcome addition that added depth, but he just sucks.

I haven't seen Delfino play enough to have a good impression on him, but according to his stats, he doesn't exactly stand out (no I wasn't expecting big numbers, but they seem rather ordinary). Who wants to give me a scouting report on this guy?

Yeah, after this season I figured Mo Pete might be going soon.
Graham is a pretty strange player, I really thought that by now he would have developed into this very athletic player at least able to drive to the hoop with strength and high %, but that doesn't seem to happen...He did play a few good games, grabbing a bunch of rebounds and stuff, but he's so freaking inconsistent...

So Detroit opening up a space and some cap room for Grant Hill? There time is still now for another title run.

Mo Pete's anger at the lack of playing time is good news, as I hope the Bucks can sign him to back up the 2/3 positions.

Delfino should get an opportunity to show his true value. The raptors are getting some good depth, hopefully they can sure up the 5 spot and they are a decent playoff squad.

Good trade by the Raptors. Delfino is an underused player with a lot of talent. In the Pistons games I've seen, he would come off the bench slashing towards the basket and pulling off some highlight reel dunks.

Perhaps Delfino could develop into a Turkoglu type of player for the Raptors?

If so, Colangelo pulled off a major steal.

apart from delfino, i am not sure if he is conciously doing so, but colangelo is dong a smart thing by importing euro based talent rather than american, because imho euro talent will be susbtantially more loyal, relative to most americans, in a canadian market.

No... not at all...
Turkoglu can shoot, delfino cant. Delfino can play defence, Turkoglu cant. The only similarity is the fact theyre both white euros...

This is a horrible trade for Detroit, a fantastic one for Toronto. I'm looking forward to what Joe decides to do, because this MUST have been a preliminary move for something good...
It cant get much worse...
