Ok lets make a lineup comparison here.
Bosh reminds me of a young Tim Duncan, obviously Bosh dont have any rings yet.
Barganini reminds me of a young Robert Horry, hasnt had the clutch opprutunitys just yet but the way they both play is about the same to me.
A-Parker reminds me of a young, rawer version of Manu Ginobili, especially on offense.
I know Tony P and TJ Ford are both young, but dont they have almost exact same tendencys with and without the ball?
I wonder if Toronto coach is trying to model his team model after the almighty Spurs?
Fri Jun 08, 2007 1:11 pm
Im pretty sure A.Parker is older than Ginobli, and the Raptors dont have as much depth as the Spurs have had in recent years
Fri Jun 08, 2007 1:13 pm
First of all Anthony Parker is older then Manu Ginobili. But some of those I could see happening. Like the Bargnani comparison is a possibility. No one knows about the Raptors yet because they are too young. You are also missing a huge piece of the puzzle in those comparisons which is Bruce Bowen, who the Raptors have no one to counteract with that. I don't think Sam Mitchell is trying to make his team like any other. All of the Raptors players have different mentalities, and egos than the Spurs players. It will take a few years to see, but as of now I don't think the Raptors are anything like the Spurs.

Thanks guys for the opinions. I really do see Barganini and Bosh being like Horry and Duncan....
and i didnt know A Parker was older then Manu...sorry

Spurs win....
YAY!!

those are very vague comparisons....besides, Spurs players are much much better on D.

I bet you out of all people know this

Bargnani has a very different game from Robert Horry. I'd say Bargnani is a better comparison with a younger version of Bargnani. I hate to say it, but Bosh would never be on the Big Fundamental's level. Bosh reminds me of a poor man's Kevin Garnett.
Fri Jun 08, 2007 2:18 pm
bosh? sorta gonna be like upgraded shareef abdul rahim... #4 pick by vancouver
timmy the duncan? i don't see it happening...
Fri Jun 08, 2007 2:31 pm
zanshadow,
Skillset? Well I think yes. But player mind set and potential i say Duncan because Bosh, loves stretching the D with his jumper, going inside and can life his team to the playoffs on his wings, something KG could not do.

I'd say that's a pretty good comparison.
I think the Raptors are really their own team, heard to really compare them to anyone.
Bosh plays a lot more like Kevin Garnett than Tim Duncan and Parker is more of a mid-range shooter where Ginobili is more of a long range shooter and slasher.

i see bosh as more of a mix between kg and jermaine o'neal. like people have been saying, its really a vague comparison - like people calling yao and tmac the next shaq and kobe, etc., etc.. I don't think bosh will ever be a mvp calibre player personally, and he's nowhere close to a young td. anthony parker I see as a hype machine, he'll be a journeyman for most of his career if he stays in the nba. ford and tp are similar in terms of foot speed, but ford is more of a playmaker. bargnani - hopefully he's better than horry in terms of individual production. i think mitchell is a little overrated as a coach as well.

I have to agree with the common sentiment here. While there are a few superficial similarities such as the presence of a talented frontcourt player, a speedy point guard and a core group that features a few international players, the Raptors don't strike me as a younger version of the Spurs or a poor man's Spurs.

Bosh isn't like a young Tim Duncan, but I can see why people compare him to Duncan. Bosh isn't a top player in the league yet, he's still shown that he can struggle against players who are capable of matching his athleticism, legnth and quickness on the defensive end. He's also drifted a lot more on the perimeter this season, although he still hits his shots at an extremely high rate and is still very agressive (8 free throw attempts per game) I'd still like to see him add a post-up game since Bosh seems stumped when he can't either blow by his defender or he can't shoot over them.
Bosh's defence is also no where near Duncan's. To be honest I think Bosh isn't even that great of a defender statisically and by watching him play because there's always some guy that will bully him around in the paint. I know that the Raptors lack a true centre but Bosh is sometimes at fault for the Raptors' weak inside presence. Maybe I'm just hard on him because I really want to see him succeed, but he definitely has bigger holes in his game than Duncan, that's for sure.
Robert Horry? The man's a scrub that's known to step it up during playoff time. Horry's ball handling, passing, athleticism and obviously potential is no where near Bargnani's. Everyone compares him to Dirk because they are 7 feet white guys that shoot threes but Cy is right on how Bargnani's game has his own sort of "feel" to it.
Anthony Parker is almost past his prime. He's a solid play creator in terms of being able to create offence for himself but he isn't a combo guard like Ginobili and lacks his quickness and slashing ability. Overall, Parker is pretty much a role player; a versatile swingman that's main role on offence is to knock down threes and does a little bit of everything although not exceptionally well. He has shown that when Bosh isn't on the floor he'll try to shoulder some of the offence though.
Parker and Ford are slightly more comparable, but Parker still blows Ford out of the water. You can tell that Parker has been coached 50 times better and plays much more to his strengths while Ford has some tendencies to force the issue.
Edit: Raptors defence is still average to slightly below average at best, so that by itself throws the Spurs comparison out the window.

In my opinion, the raptors kind of play like a young Phoenix Suns team dont you think?
I mean, excluding Nash (raps use there good 2 point guard duo) they have role players for there offence, usually share the ball, and play as a TEAM. Hence the word "young" (suns team), as you know their offence cannot compare to the Sun's explosive offence. They just have the same type of style.
They hired former PHX gm Colangelo. So, expect some additions similar to ones that he had fixed up for Phoenix. Also, i remebered Dirk saying that they kind of play like Phoenix. Cant beat that
There defence is shaky, just like the Suns'.

I had a brain fart. I meant to say a younger Dirk Nowitzki. At least, in terms of being 7 footers that can shoot 3's with mediocre rebounding. What Bargs can bring is a better passing ability (don't let his apg deceive you) and his off-the-charts confidence.

I think the Raptors are trying to become like the Spur/Suns mix...
If you watched the Suns/Spurs series... Suns isn't like THATTTTTTTT different than the Spurs...
They both can run and slow it down.. Play great defence... Suns is a good defensive club .. They just play at a hectic pace...
I think the Raptors are a mix of that..
Raptors don't have a center like Suns... They play quite fast, with TJ Ford and Calderon... Who prob combines to be as effective as Nash ( Both these PG scores and runs the offense well )
They have some athletes in Peterson, Joey Grahm.. Bosh, Ford are athletic as well.. Good shooter in Parker, Peterson.
A very versatile team.. I just think the Raptors are missing a big star.. Bosh is like a Garnett without being as good of a defensive player..
Ford and Calderon... If 1 of them can move to the next level ( all-star level ) Raptors can contend for the Eastern Conference championship...
It is just like the T-Wolves with Garnett, Cassell and Sprewell... Garnett is better than Bosh, but Cassell was the leader....
Duncan is the leader on the Spurs, Nash on the Suns...
Raptors got none.. Bosh is prob a better leader in some terms than Garnett, and less of a player.. but he still isn't there..
Greg Popovich is a much better coach than Mitchell.. I think Mitchell is overrated.

I agree, but Raptors need to add another rebounder to that team, if not they are gonna get bullied by the other Atlantic Division teams
While most of you guys hate on Anthony Parker, I believe if he has plays run for him next season he can easily average 19 a game, since Mo Pete ain't coming back!!! If AP had more touched in Game 1, Raps could've made the second round to face Cleveland
Raptors top 3 should be Bosh, AP, Andrea Or TJ Ford If those 3 are consistent, Raps could be a hard team to beat!!! I don't realy care about Kapono much or Delfino
Sat Jul 07, 2007 3:21 am
TJ would never have been finals mvp... he is fast but on all other aspects parker is the better player.
