Breaking News: Kerr To Be Named Phoenix GM
31st May, 2007 - 8:19 pm
East Valley Tribune -
Steve Kerr will be announced as the new president of basketball operations and general manager of the Suns within the week, an NBA source with knowledge of the situation said. Current general manager Mike D’Antoni will still have a front office title in addition to his coaching duties

The source said current vice president of basketball operations David Griffin will decide tonight whether to stay with the Suns or take a similar position with the Grizzlies. The Suns want Griffin to stay and would probably give him a raise and another title. Griffin would also keep a lot of the duties for which he is currently responsible.

Wow, that was a huge shock for me despite the fact he's a minority owner. I can't really see him doing well as a GM, I don't know why but I can't imagine him helping this Suns team get any better.

Isn't he in love with one of the Suns major rivals, the Spurs?

The only good thing I see coming out of this is the fact Steve Kerr might not be in Live 08. :|

EDIT: I just realized Steve is commentating the Cavs/Pistons game as I type this. Does he even realize he's now a GM!?

i think so too.. i think he wont be a great GM.. but well.. he also has his share of experiences and championships.. plus he's a commentator for the past years.. meaning he knows what each team needs as he watches every game live... i think hed do average.. but wont make an impact...

kerr took the suns job to trade marion to the spurs for thier second round pick

Fri Jun 01, 2007 12:02 pm

I wouldn't want to see Kerr as a GM, not because I think he'd be unsuccessful, but because he was such a great color commentator. He was always smart, insightful and funny and made the game so enjoyable.

On the other hand, I do think he'll make a good GM, if only for the fact that he seems to actually have common sense. He might be a GM in the mold of John Paxson, smart and sensible, if a bit on the conservative side.

Fri Jun 01, 2007 12:20 pm

As you said, Steve seems to be very conservative, not trying to pull any blockbuster moves and will make sensible decisions. That is a good type of GM to have on a team that is at the top and doesn't seem to need any final pieces to complete their mision. However, Suns are looking at losing Marion and just haven't been able to get over the hump and reach the finals, falling to the Mavs and Spurs.

I just don't think he's gonna pull the move that gets Phoenix over that hump, especially since they are losing an All Star as he takes over.

I didn't like him as a commentator at all. He was quite insightful, but I don't like listening to his commentating for some reason.

very shocking news...
now the question is, who is going to take over his role as a broadcaster?
especially since this is a nba live community, this will affect future nba live games..

Fri Jun 01, 2007 12:55 pm

Not much of a shock at all to people here in Phoenix. Once Jerry Colangelo sold the team, it was pretty much expected that Brian C would be out as GM and Kerr would take his spot. What I don't understand is why Kerr didn't take over last offseason, where we made some pretty shitty signings.

Fri Jun 01, 2007 1:31 pm

noooooo........this means we'll have to suffer through more of Doug Collins "colour" commentary

Fri Jun 01, 2007 1:44 pm

I'd rather have him stay in commentary. I'd like to see Barkley be on commentary for Live.

Fri Jun 01, 2007 2:04 pm

I like Doug Collins, I think he offers more insight than Kerr, though I still think the best broadcasting duo in Basketball is Lenny Wilkins and Kevin Colabro of the Sonics... too bad they don't have a great to team to announce for.

As far as this move.... wow. I seriously I had no idea this was coming. Who will now join Marv Albert? Doug Collins and move in Reggie to go with Kevin Harlen? Who knows...

Good, now Griffin can come to Memphis!

Nah, the radio here in Phoenix has been saying that Griffin is staying...a nice lil' combo of Kerr & Griffin in the Suns' front office :)

Fri Jun 01, 2007 6:25 pm

He should sign himself as a back-up shooting guard.

I agree on both counts. I guess it remains to be seen but if he does turn out to be the kind of GM that errs on the side of caution I don't think it will hurt the Suns. Better to be looking for the right move to make than making one simply for the sake of making a move.

being a conservative gm is good if you know when to pull the blockbuster deal. the gms that tend to fail are the ones that feel they always have to make a move, cant just be happy with what they got.

David Griffin has been offered the vice president/general manager’s post by the Memphis Grizzlies . Griffin said late Thursday night he was still pondering the offer and would likely make his decision Friday.

The Grizzlies officially introduced Suns assistant Marc Iavaroni as their coach Thursday and are hoping Griffin will follow him to Tennessee. But several sources within the Suns organization are hopeful that Griffin will remain in Phoenix if the job and compensation offered by the Grizzlies aren’t a perfect fit.

I don't think he has quite made his decision yet

I can see him talking shit to the game "Put down the controller. . Your Not going to win. Your playin Dallas. Your The Bulls. . . Look, You can't score, You have 3 midgets who are hot once in a while, just give it up" and it'll go On And On And On And On . . . lol

 oh god, yet another reason to kill myself outside of the possibility of another Spurs/Pistons Finals.

I hope that they bring back the Czar to team with Marv and that Doug Collins goes back to whereever he came from.

Sat Jun 02, 2007 11:26 pm

i would love for barkley to do live but, at the same time i think, with me anyway, it would get old after a few games. just like with everyone else. thats why i wish they took out all the commentary except the chatter for what is actually going on in the game currently being played.

Sun Jun 03, 2007 2:40 am

I'm not so very pleased with him becoming a GM. Why? Because I like him as a commentator.

I like Mark Jackson, maybe TNT should bring him in.

Sun Jun 03, 2007 3:29 am

i liked him alot too but oh well, now we can listen to some other jerk. i also like reggie i think he does a good job. not to found of jackson mainly cause i disagree with alot of what he says
