I think they're making a big mistake.

I was hoping for a coaching change but never thought it would happen. I just think the Rocket need a new coach that brings something else because I personally believe Jeff's system and style is NOT suited for the players he has. They can run the plays and play his defense but it is missing something that I believe jeff will not give them . I'm looking forward to a more fluid offense and continuing to play solid defense. Not at all sadded by this change just hope it is worth it in the long run.

isn't Van Gundy a defensive mastermind?
what a terrible mistake

Yeah, seeing the type of season they had even without Ming and Wells for a long time, and of course without Sura, this really seems unfair. With everyone healthy, Van Gundy could have done a really good job next year...

I think the Rockets are going to look back on this and regret it.

The actual Xs & Os can be left to assistant coaches. The head coach needs to be a force of personality and a leader to multi-millionaires. Either by just raw force, like Pops, or head games like Phil Jackson. Not sure if either Van Gundy had the "snap to it" respect from the millionaire players of the NBA.
But that can be said for 90% of the coaches in the NBA...and why good college coaches fail in the pros.

Wow, Van Gundy fired after leading his team to a 50+ win season and 5th seed in the WEST, without Yao for a long period!
They're crazy...

Well he told that he wanted to go into a different dirrection. Rick Adelman is a good coach, don't know if he'll be able to make this team into a championship contender, all the injuries for the past two seasons kept them out of making a big push. Maybe Stan Van Gundy can be another choice.

Haha, Van Gundy is on ESPN commenting SA-Phoe right now, and saying it feels weird having just been fired...I don't think I would be doing comments on live TV on a day like that...

Or a combination of both, like Larry Brown.

Not altogether surprising seeing as though he had expressed an interest in taking a break from coaching and when a team suffers a disappointing playoff loss (or misses the Playoffs entirely) the blade usually falls on the coach. Still, it seemed he was going to leave on his own terms.
