Kobe will go down as one of the best players to ever play the game and never win a MVP.

KG won the MVP a few years back, 03-04 season I think.

That's a surprisingly long list of great players who never won regular season MVP honours and there's probably a couple more you could add to it (Jason Kidd for one), though pretty much every era has had a few standout players who tend to have a monopoly on the MVP award. It should also be noted that some of those players have picked up All-Star or Finals MVP trophies and it's difficult to imagine George Mikan wouldn't have collected a few MVP awards had the award existed during his career. I have a feeling Kobe won't remain on that list when it's all said and done though.

i also think theres quite a long list of accomplished defensive players who have never won the dpoy. td probably near or at the top of my list, and of course pip, among many others.

I think some of that is because at least recently the DPOY running is usually reserved for defensive specialists like Ben Wallace. Guys like Duncan and KG and Pip are almost overqualified because they can do everything, including score & make plays.

This year is no different, i felt both Duncan & KG (and JON) were better defensive players but it went to Camby, who's pretty much a defensive specialist.

Perhaps the votes these days are being cast with the purpose of recognising a player who impacts a game primarily through his defense like Ben Wallace or Marcus Camby, with players like Duncan relegated to the MVP award due to their overall contribution at both ends despite the fact they should be candidates for DPOY honours as well.
