The NBA announced today that Marcus Camby of the Denver Nuggets has won the 2006-07 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.
The 6-11 forward/center averaged a league-high 3.30 blocks to go along with 11.7 rpg (tied for fourth in the NBA), 11.2 ppg and a career-high 3.2 apg. Camby led the Nuggets in starts (70) and recorded a career-best 32 games with double figures in both points and rebounds. Camby also led all centers in steals (1.24 spg), while his assists were second among centers.
So - I think it was pretty one-sided. I was surprised to see Mourning behind Kobe Bryant.
Entire article.

Finally he had a solid season without major injuries, amazing shot blocker, core defensive player for offensively minded Nuggets...GJ MC23

Camby was the most obvious choice, nobody deserves it more. Giving it to anyone else would have been worse than giving Nash the MVP trophy twice.
It's just surprising that Iguodala didn't get more votes.

I'm surprised Okafor didn't get any first round votes and at bowen rankin second

Yeah, finally he got an award for his defensive A game. Actually I have a Camby jersey which might see some sunshine now (Bandwagoner hello

)
Bowen at 2 is nice. He is really a sick 1n1 defender, but stats are often killing those guys in comparison to shotblockers or passing lanes checkers.

Congrats to Camby. I was hoping Okafor had more votes, but ah well, Camby was well deserving of the award.

He hasn't been around lately, so I think it's safe to say that he did

Jermaine O'Neal being 10th in voting shows how stupid and worthless these awards are. JO was the best defensive player in the league this season. He does way more things then Camby does on the defensive side of the floor.

Yes, JO is the best power forward in the league, and the Pacers are the best team in the NBA.

coming from a Pacers fan
anyway Well done to Camby he really deserved it, some of the games he had, in his last 3 games: 7 blocks, 7 blocks and 9 blocks!
He also averaged the most steals for a big man and 4th in assists.
He absolutely destroyed the vote count

Ok, since you guys are so damn smart tell me how many Nuggets and Pacers games you watched this year? Because I watched 82 Pacers games and probably 20 Nuggets games.
JO actually made the Pacers a somewhat respectable defensive team this season all by himself. He averaged almost 3 blocks a game when for most of the second half of the season his knees and ankle were in so much pain he didn't practice once. Not only that but he was 7th in charges taken this year with 51. None of the other top 5 shotblockers in the league were even in the top 35 in taking charges.
Not to mention the fact that the Pacers were 12th best in the league in points allowed, while Denver was 5th worst, while Indiana has much worse defensive players surrounding Jermaine.
At least learn something about the game before you call me a homer and dismiss what I'm saying. Better yet watch a game.

Camby was our defense, if he wasnt on the team we would be giving up 120ppg, he held the Nuggets defense together.

If you wanna play that game Camby has been playing injured since he first came to the Nuggets.
Camby had to win this, he was recording like 12 rebounds along with 9 blocks in some games. Give the guy some credit for once.

I'd have to agree to with Indy here. The voting is a joke. JO should have been top 3 in my opinion, and probably should have won. I think these people should have to defend their votes. I mean come on, who the hell gave Udonis Haslem a first place vote? It seems like the voters didn't even watch the season. Guys like Kiralenko and Artest got votes on name recognition.

Camby's opposing Centers score 50% FG against him, which is mediocre for a Center. JON & Duncan hold their opponents to 47-46%. Big Ben is 48% this year, Tyson Chandler 50%, Shaq 48%.
I don't know how they ever pick DPOY, ever voter probably goes by something different. A good portion probably just go with Reb + St + Blocks, which would point to Camby.
Camby is DPOY, but JON is a better defender.

Camby was not nearly as hurt this season as Jermaine was. JO was a warrior all season, he should have sat the year out. He is having knee surgery this offseason, but it should have been done about 4 or 5 games in. Marcus would have had the surgery and sat out the majority of another season. JO just went out and carried a team on his hobbled body all year and then doesn't get any recognition for it and it pisses me the fuck off.

Camby is a very good defensive player, and I have no problem with him winning the award, as deserving as I think JO is. It's Jermaine being 10th in voting with only 3 total votes that makes me angry, and I don't even care about these awards.
Good stats maes, I wasn't aware of that. I'm extremely impressed that Jermaine was able to hold his man to about the same amount of points as Duncan did. Especially because Duncan plays on a good defensive team where he doesn't have to be the help defender on every play while Jermaine is forced to block shots left and right because Dunleavy and Granger couldn't guard any perimiter players all year.

Jermaine O'Neal is a huge anchor for that Pacers team defensively. Remember that Camby has Carmelo and Nene who are decent rebounders. If Camby goes to help on defense, he doesnt have to worry about the other team getting an offensive rebound.
O'Neal on the other hand doesnt have anyone really. Murphey is an O.K. rebounder, but I wouldn't put him in the same class as Nene.

Othen then Jeff you are right.
Sat Apr 28, 2007 2:55 pm
JO is easily the bigger impact player on D. I think having shitting defenders and playing up-tempo helps Camby since he gets many more chances for blocks, steals, and rebounds.
Personally i would have went with Tim Duncan though.
This list is a travesty though, shows that people don't watch games. Rasheed Wallace EASILY belongs in the top 10 and should at least make All D 2nd. Some guys are getting reputation votes, and how did Kobe get a point? His D hasn't been this bad since his rookie year.
Sat Apr 28, 2007 4:55 pm
It's funny how people forget how good players are when their teams fall apart or they get injured. I remember when people were talking about Jermaine as a top 10 player in the league, now I hear nothing about him. The award itself is pretty much entirely based on statistics. If it wasn't, Tim Duncan would have won one by now.

Regular season stats:
J. O'Neal: 35.6 MPG | 7.40 DREB | 0.72 SPG | 2.64 BPG
M. Camby: 33.8 MPG | 9.30 DREB | 1.24 SPG | 3.30 BPG
So you have it.

Stats don't do justice to JO's dominance. Besides, how are they gonna give DPOY to a guy that doesn't show on P&R's?

So you're saying that JO is the best defensive player in the league although the stats show the opposite. I wouldn't be arguing if JO would have been in the top 5 but he was 10th
Sat Apr 28, 2007 6:08 pm
No, i'm saying that JO is better than Camby. Defence isn't a stat that can be completely measured by stats. Look at Clifford Robinson for example, say 5 yrs ago, his stats were sub par but he was easily the best man-to-man PF in the L. His rebound #'s were like 4rpg, but he rarely got outrebounded because he boxed his man out.
Now look at Rasheed V C Webb. Both averaged 7.2rpg this season but one is much better than the other. That is, Rasheed who is a pretty good rebounder, whereas C Webb grabs uncontested rebounds eg: from FT's....which is why LBJ's RPG #'s are so high.
