Arenas scolded for making $10 bets with fans

WASHINGTON -- Gilbert Arenas was admonished by the NBA for making $10 bets with fans during the Washington Wizards' loss at Portland on Wednesday.

"We spoke to Gilbert and explained the issue to him," NBA spokesman John Acunto said Sunday. "And he assured us he wouldn't do anything like this again."

Arenas made the bets as he bantered with fans throughout the Wizards' 100-98 loss. He was booed during pregame introductions and whenever he touched the ball because he had promised to score 50 points against the Trail Blazers.

After the game, Arenas said he bet a fan $10 that he would make the winning basket. He missed badly -- throwing up a shot that fell short of the rim -- and finished with only 19 points.

"I owe somebody 10 bucks," Arenas said. "I bet a fan if I had a chance I would make the last shot."

Arenas later elaborated on his nba.com blog, saying that he made $10 bets with two fans during the game and had obtained their e-mail addresses so that he could pay them off. The NBA since has removed the references to the bets from the blog.

Arenas was not available for comment Sunday, a day off for the Wizards during their West Coast road trip.

wow..

it's obvious the NBA doesn't condone gambling.

I've lost so much respect for Gilbert in the past couple months. He used to be a guy who kept his mouth shut and played. And now, every chance he gets hes spouting off about how great he is. Taking it so far as to bet with fans...is he nuts? I'm surprised the NBA hasnt fined him....

EDIT: 777 posts? thats just funny looking

Same here. It's not often I see a player get reprimanded rather than get fined.

Especially in a thread about betting :P

I can't imagine how many fanboys we would have if he made that shot.

Probably because he's gotten used to talking with his blog ;)

Nah, maybe not. $10 bets are ridiculous though.

I wasnt saying the 10 buck bet was ridiculous. However, for an nba player, thats as easy as picking their nose. For a fan, in a seat close enough to banter with gilbert, i'm sure thats not a large chunk of change either. But shit, all betting is technically with fans isnt it? You dont really bet with people who dont watch the sport...you cant gamble on the sport you play, especially if its on your performance....Gilbert is eerily turning into a T.O. with out the work ethic issues...its bothering me because i like him, i like his style of play, i like his slogan, and i like his back story (late 2nd rounder becoming an nba all star)...he just needs to shut the fuck up and play the game like he's supposed to.

Only now! I've been thinking he's getting too far up his own arse since he didn't make the Olympic squad and then placed a vendetta on every coach, player, official and their cats directly or indirectly related to the event.

Lets just see how he plays in the playoffs. See if he can really walk to walk.

How is he doing that? In like the last few games he's averaging more assists than his season average, breaking 10 more than a few times. I don't see whats so bad about 10 dollar bets with rich fans if it's all in good fun.

Tue Mar 27, 2007 6:16 am

The more crazy stuff I hear about him the more I like him. And I don't even know why, it's not like I had an influence on that.

But don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan, I just kinda like his attitude.

Tue Mar 27, 2007 6:56 am

well..his attitude right now doesn't impress me much coz players are supposed to be leaders for the young fans of the NBA.. And betting doesn't make it a good example.. i just hate it when players who were before nobodies grow their heads once they get to their prime

Tue Mar 27, 2007 8:52 am

This story actually makes me gain respect for Gilbert. I think that's very cool that he's down to earth enough to joke around with fans and make little funny bets like that. Those fans have a great story to tell now.

Tue Mar 27, 2007 10:54 am

^^^exactly......he's a fans player. I don't see where this "arrogance" talk is coming from.

When J-Smoove becomes one of the top players in the NBA see how much of a douchebag he becomes.

Tue Mar 27, 2007 11:41 am

I love Arenas, he obviously loves the game and he's always entertaining. I'd be an Arenas fan if he was scoring only 16 a game.

The worst part of the NBA is that 90% of them consider it nothing but a high paying office job and carry that attitude on & off the court.

Arenas is a nice breath of fresh air. The guy is supremely talented but still knows this is all just a game for the fans.

What? This is completely the opposite of him having a big ego. If he had a big head he wouldn't interact with fans like this.
