I love Atlanta!
I live 2 hours from there so we go there a lot. It's a great city. Their sports teams suck though.
Dro wrote:I visited last summer...as others have said, nice place to visit, but living there would be a completely different story. I live in a Phoenix suburb and I still can't stand the traffic I have to drive through in the mornings on my way to ASU. New York's traffic is just horrifying. And the sidewalks are ALWAYS busy! Drives me nuts.

I want to live in the US because everything over there is exactly how I like. I love New Zealand, but the people here are mostly annoying and alot of jobs pay like shit. I noticed a while back that I only listen to American music, watch American TV, play American sports, etc. so I figure it wouldn't be to hard to translate to life over there, and everything wouldn't seem so foreign. The thing that would make the transition tough is the fast paced lifestyle. I see Auckland as fast paced, and Auckland would be a small city in the US. If I make it there, I am pretty damn sure I will like it alot better than here though.

I'm going to be officially a graphic designer in a couple months, and I've been to New York. It's an awesome place to visit, but I would never want to live there. It's a great place for graphic designers, but only for those who are living the dream, otherwise, it can be pretty damn tough with all the competition around. Unless you're not looking to start your own business, you might be lucky to work for a firm, but you would be really lucky to be picked among the thousands of applications being sent there fresh off of college/university and over experienced designers.
I don't mean to shoot down your dreams or aspirations, but I'm trying to be realistic as I've read stories from other graphic designers who find it very tough to manage there, and end up moving back to their hometown. Like I said, it's a great place to visit, and I'm definitely going back someday.
I'm a graphic designer lifelong resident in NYC(Bronx and Long Island). I graduated college in 1982, paid my dues and worked at some sh!tty places, but it paid off in the end. You have to have a combo of talent and luck to make it as a graphic designer in NYC. I've been at my present job for 14 years. My current boss and ex-boss used to do business together(we printed t-shirts for him). He was in a jam and needed an extra artist to do tie designs(his freelancers were swamped). He asked my old boss if he knew anyone, and my old boss recommended me. He liked my freelance stuff, and eventually hired me as his first in-house artist.
