My favorite was NBA Live '97, Mitch looked good on the cover. Second favorite would be Tim Hardaway on '98 and '99 was plain... Weird?

EDIT: For some reason I don't remember the Live '96 cover at all

Technically he did, since his photo accompanied the "Jordan is back" strip on the NBA Live 2000 cover.

As to why he was never chosen as the main cover player before then, he wasn't in the game due to copyright issues, thus wasn't available to be used on the cover either; it wouldn't have made much sense to have a cover player who wasn't in the actual game anyway.

Why was he never really in the game, why did he have to be Player 99?

He had exclusive rights to his image and thus legally could not appear in NBA Live unless EA Sports was willing to pay him likeness rights. I can't remember the exact figure but suffice to say it wasn't cheap. Charles Barkley and David Robinson are two noteable players who weren't included in the rosters of at least one NBA Live game while active players due to similar reasons. There have also been other games where certain players have not been allowed to be included for one legal roadblock or another.

I'll go for Franchise and 2002, it's strangely aggressive, makes you want to buy the game.
Hmmm maybe I should now that I have a console.

Looking at the results so far, seems it's between KG and Vinsanity.

I had to go with wade...considering how well he lived up to it with a stellar season.

Live 99 was my first NBA live I ever played (Live 2001 was my first ever Live I purchased)

I remember me on keyboard vs older cousin on joystick.

Good times, good times.

Starks/Horry and Shaq arent getting any love because we were all born around that time so we dont remember the covers.

I like Carmelo's '05 one, but Mitch Richmond in '97 is without a doubt the best 8-)

I've got it right next to me! Ah, the good old days of running down the sideline trying to pull up for a jumper only to float about ten feet in the air out of bounds while releasing the ball. (Y)

I can top both of you. I own EA's NBA installment from '94 before live even existed...i think its called showtime/showdown...dell curry does not miss from beyond the arc in it.

I owned Live '95 on my Sega Mega Drive 2 (Genesis for US readers)....it still remains my favourite Live....I would've played almost 1,000 games of it, including about 400 against my brother (from memory of the user records, I won 81% of them, but most games were close & classic)....

I've also played Showdown & Bulls vs Blazers on the Mega Drive....those earlier games were too slow & didn't match up to the speed of Live....the one thing positive I will say about Bulls vs Blazers, they had signature shots for the stars

I've naturally played the Bird vs Jordan games & all those ones on my Commodore 64....I think I played Dr. J vs Bird as well, but yeah, that's going back to my childhood....

I'm partial to Tim Duncan's 2000, since that was the first Live I bought, but Kidd's 2003 looks the best in my opinion.

06 looks good, and the logo for Garnett's cover looks good, but not his pose/expression.

KG remains ahead after one week, which is kind of funny considering the poor reception for NBA Live 2001 when it was released. It would seem that with all the gripes about that game, the choice of cover player isn't among them. ;)

I like the Richmond cover. Seems like he never really got much love. As for older games I had - Bulls vs Lakers and Bulls vs. Blazers.

i wonder why there are just lay-ups and dribbling pics of the players on the covers... i mean imagine a buzzer-beater or a shot from downtown... sounds much more attractive to me...
