WOW! I know Chris Kaman has had a good season but is he worth the $52.5 million he'll be getting over the next five years? They needed to re-sign but I wouldn't be willingto pay him over $10 million each year. I thought he would've been signed for around $7-8 million per year. Seems a pretty good year for anybody can get you a real big contract.

At least Sterling is spending money to keep guys around. Good move in keeping Kaman, don't know if he was worth that much but the key to the Clips keeping up the success is keeping the same core around, Cassell doesn't really have to be kept around for more than another 2 years so Livingston can learn a few more tricks.

Good one.
$10 million a year is a lot. He did have a pretty good season last year and he works hard. He's overpaid for sure, but who else isn't? A lot of other guys in the league are way overpaid, and that just seems to be the trend these days.

^well he used that to his advantage, citing big men like Dalembert and Chandler

If he continues to play at his level & continues to improve he's a bargain at $10M a year. The NBA salaries are within restrictions a free market governed by supply & demand, and legitimate 7' NBA centers are incredibly rare.
There's always some issue with Centers. They're undersized (sweetney, skinner), not strong enough, gets in foul trouble (chandler), can't run 35 minutes per game (virtually all of them), or are constantly injured (camby).
Kaman is 7', 265 lbs, plays 32 mpg, missed only 4 games last year. He's a steady 9.6 boards along with 11 points, and unlike other guys who have their rebounds stat padded because nobody else rebounds (cough Troy Murphy), Kaman gets his 9.6 boards competing with Brand every night. He's even commented on some nights his toughest competition is Brand, not the other Center.
His blocks per game stat doesn't jump out at you, but guys with a high BPG are weak side ambushers, like Kirilenko or G.Wallace. Kaman alters opposing shots with his height straight up, and altered shots is probably the most important stat never published.
A lot of people credit Brand for the Clips success, but he really hasn't done anything he hasn't done every year. The emergence of Kaman and replacing Jaric w/ Cassell are the two big factors. Brand + Kaman is about as good a big man duo as any in the league.

Youve gotta remember Kaman had a few games last season getting 20+20 (coupled with Brand getting something ridiculous like 40+20)
Sure, he wont do that every night, but its an indicator of what he can do, and will be able to do more often with experience.

Caveman's going to be an elite center in the league soon. I think it was wise of the Clippers to keep him satisfied.

they definitely overpaid him, but looking at what Nene, Chandler & Dalembert get, the money he got is probably right....this deal just reaffirms my thought that Bogut will be a max contract player in a couple of years (not because he will be worth, just because of what other big's get)

I don't think he's being overpaid. I think both Chandler and Dalembert got more money and they both had some serious question marks surrounding them that Kaman certainly doesn't have (consistency, work ethic, durability, offensive skills). Not only he'd already be a 15/10 guy if he didn't play along someone like Brand, he's also young, hard working and has still ton of potential left. He could very well end up being a 15/10 guy playing with Brand, which is not an easy thing to do and is very valuable when coming from a true centre. How many guys are capable of doing that nowadays? Shaq, Yao, Duncan (I consider him to be a C), Dwight Howard and probably Bogut. Not exactly a lot of guys.

Kaman's stats toward the end of the year were much better than what his season long statistics are. He started the year out very slowly, but around late December, he was putting up a double double every night. I wouldnt be surprised to see him average close to 15 ppg this year and continue to improve on the rebounds. Another positive about Kaman is his free throw shooting. He's much better than most 7 footers.. I believe he hit 30 in a row at one point last season.
If he can stay healthy, he'll definetly be worth the money.

Go Paper Clips. Kamans still young and hes proven he can step up. If you look at the market for big men, not much to look at. Finding a 7 foot guy is hard to do, finding one that can play ball is harder.

Kaman doesnt deserve all this money yet. He didn't even play very good the first half of the season.

Couldn't agree more. I was going to say the same thing about Bogut. If he can perform this year, say average around 14/8.5/2.5 then he will be lining himself up a big big contract. It's sad the lack of quality big men in the league right now means guys like Chandler and Dalembert are getting big money but would have been, in my opinion, bench players in the 90's.

good on kaman he deserves it more than both nene and chandler. Man that 2003 draft class is insane

kaman is gonna be a great player.. not only a good player but a great player.. hes not gonna be an all star or a superstar.. but hes gonna be a great player coz he does what everycenter should be doing..
disrupting and altering shots
blocking shots
intimidation
offensive rebounds
explosiveness (sometimes)
post strength
defense
post offense
and defensive rebounds
im glad he had been overpaid because if he wasnt.. his potential wouldve done a downward spiral coz he functions well with the LAC.. But if he was traded.. or signed with another team..
he could function that well..
its good that LAC decided to tandem Brand and Kaman..
Its really effective..
