cklitsie wrote:Just wondering Colin, is this your rating? I mean I'm kinda dissapointed by the album, no way it's their best so what rating would the older ones get then?
Yes it is my rating. And I'm surprised you were disappointed, because I have yet to hear anything bad about this album from anyone that likes The Roots at all. Other than lukewarm response to "Don't Feel Right".

As for The Roots discography
1 - Things Fall Apart/Illadelph Halflife
3 - Do You Want More?!!!???!/Game Theory
5 - Phrenology
6 - Organix
7 - The Tipping Point (and even this isn't a bad album)

Even though it's the same group, it's so hard to compare the top 4 albums I've got there because they are so different. DYWM is a very jazz-influenced album with improvisation. IH is very hip-hop orientated and is harder. TFA has a bit of a native tongues feel and is the goal for every 'backpack' rapper out there. GT is a much darker album featuring Black Thought's best lyrics, and a really full musical sound. It also really feels like an album. Trying to pick the best song is hard because there really aren't any weak spots or true standouts. Everything is dope for it's own reasons.

don't forget about "Same Thing Different Day" which was a kickass album and the "Better Dayz" mixtape.

He also has heaps of ABN stuff and G-Maab.

Sun Sep 10, 2006 6:52 pm

Yup, personally he's probably top 3 outta houston for me.

And I'm feeling Restless more and more with each listen, wasn't really enjoying it a whole lot when I first brought it.

1. Scarface
2. UGK (can't have one w/o the other)
3. Trae
4. Devin
5. Lil Keke

that's my Texas top 5.

Mon Sep 11, 2006 9:26 am

Personally I'd put Z-Ro over Lil Keke, but other then that...that's my list.

I interviewed Panacea a couple days ago, they recently signed with Rawkus Records. A dope group, you'll be hearing a lot about them when their debut album gets released (october 3rd).
Go check it out:

You shouldn't be talkin if you ain't even know Devin The Dude.

Tue Sep 12, 2006 11:21 am

No love for Mr. Face? And your from Houston? I don't listen to too much out of the south, but I like Scarface.

It's all over, The album of the year is a Philly thing. But I'm not talking about Game Theory. Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell by Jedi Mind Tricks is by far the sickest album this year. The beats, the samples, the hooks and choruses are on point, the whole production is awesome. Vinnie Paz kept his incredibly raw style but went deeper than never before with the lyrics. All guest appearances came strong. I liked Violent By Design and Visions Of Gandhi was even better but this is by far their best album. If you ask me, Cormega is the only one who can possibly top that album with his solo album.

well, if you don't know who Devin is obviously your not from Houston AND you've never heard of "Fuck You" from 2001. :P

LMAO @ Chamill on what my Top 5 should be, and an even bigger WTF @ Bun b can't rap.

Can't wait for Devins new stuff which should be out soon. (Y)

Me and a friend always used to say GEE-YOUnit to each other as a joke...
but then this tool started to say it, and its really gay when we say it now (cos the tool said it) Its a bit like that south park (south park is gay) where the white guys kept stealing the black guys words.
"Cmon Mr Slave. Lets get back to our flippity floppity floop"

So we need a new rapper to use...

I was thinking Chamillionaire, since you can Kamillionaire or CHA millionaire, so its got some variety, but it doesnt have the same BANG as GEE-YOUnit

Anyone know any good rappers to use?

It's just got one pronounciation. Kamillionaire, as opposed to Shamillionaire. It's got the 'Ka' sound from chameleon (the lizard) and thus the reason he has nicknames such as "Colour Changing Lizard", why the lizard logo appear on his CD cover and the like, and why he was part of "The Colour Changing Click".

It WAS the retail...but it leaked 3 months before it was set for release, so Lupe basically scrapped it...added around 7 new songs to the new version of Food & Liquor. Changed a couple beats and added some new verses to the songs that he kept on from the leaked version
