2007 NBA Dunk Contest

James White
Andre Iguodala
Nate Robinson (just so we can have a returning champ and possible rematch)
Gerald Green

I'd love to see some of the vets revive the spirit of the 80s and early 90s when big names were actually interested in the event and realised that:

a) The only people who are labelled as "nothing but good dunkers" are benchwarmers or average role players who were never going to be much more than that anyway.

b) No one has ever been injured taking part in the dunk contest (with the possible exception of Tony Dumas in 1995, though he came into the contest with a gimpy knee).

It's unlikely though. Players enjoying the basketball side of the All-Star Weekend seems to be a thing of the past. It almost seems like a lot of players consider it a chore rather than an honour or fun competition.

yea i agree, the players (bar the rookies) seem to not enjoy it as much as expected, some players moan about how they arnt all stars and then wen they get there they dont put on a show, giving the fans a show is what its all about. also, i think they should change the rules back to anyone is allowed and it was like 7 players (?) i think that would be much better, with the level of dunking ability around today

I agree, an open contest and a field of eight (or seven six) competitors would be great. But since none of the vets really seem interested in competing it does make sense to rebrand the contest as a "rising stars" event and invite players up to their third year in the league.

Surely there would be a few vets keen, of the top of my head i would say ricky davis, steve francis, jason richardson and maybe tracy mcgrady (if he is healthy) would go for it. i dont know if the NBA really realizes that slowly over time the NBA All star weekend has gone from this amazing, dazzling spectacle, to this sorta "watered-down" version. sure the dunks are great, but why not add some star power? you will still see these dunks, but you could get an extra 3 or so players in there to spice it up a little. its obvious that steve francis would not be on the same level as an Andre igoudala or a James White, but i think alot more people would be interested if they saw him go up against the younger guys. I think the players need to recognize that All star weekend is to put a show on for the fans, and they arnt doing it too well right now.

also, im shocked that nobody else is mentioning dwight howard, personaly i would love to see this guy go for it. everyone that hasnt seen the videos of his team USA warmup dunks should check them out, he can jump like crazy. Heres the links:

James White is going to be playing d-league ball most likely, thus he wont be in the NBA dunk contest.

I like Dwight's freakish athleticism and all, but to me he isn't an all-star game dunker. He's got a lot of power and leaping ability, but Howard doesn't have a lot of creativity on his dunks that dunk contestants need in order to put on a show.

Then again in games it's easier to get a powerful dunk in than mess up a fancy one. All-star dunks are planned so he might be capable of doing it.

So everybody says James White, but what if he did the exact same dunks he did in the college dunk contest? What's the point of seeing him doing it again and maybe end up winning the contest because of him doing the same dunks. I see no creativity in him just doing the same free throw line dunks all the time. Now, if he can get a little more creativity in the contest then I wouldn't mind seeing him, but for some odd reason I think he is going to do the same ol' dunks that we have seen him do before. They are nice to see, but if you have already seen them, then its not that big of a deal. I'll like to see Iguodala, Robinson (because he is the returning champ), Carney and Green/Gay.

c'mon, nobody's gonna care if he does it again. His dunks were so amazing that I wouldn't mind seeing them again.

if dude does a under the legs from the freethrow, followed by a windmill from freethrow, then his switch hands windmill/tomahawk, then that rock the cradle with the airwalk thing, im pretty sure they will all get at least 48's. Also i dunno if james will spend the whole season in the D-league, he had a nice summer league, but they did get marquis, and james plays the SG/SF positions and who do they have left to compete with him? there is only Stephen, Danny, Marquis and James + stephen is primarily a SG, im sure he will find time. -BHZMAFIA-, your obviously a rudy gay fan, have you ever seen him in a dunk contest? if u have how did he do? i knw rudy is a great dunker, but i just cant see him taking a win from White unless white does wat he always seems to do - choke.

sometimes the perfect execution of a windmill (or another known dunk) is much more beautiful then a sloppily done free throw dunk for me, like elgrace wilborn's windmill in last year's ncaa dunk competition which also included rodney carney and james white, his windmill was the best for me that's why i want dwight to be in the competition.

Exactly.

My picks: Rudy Gay, Andre Iguodala, Josh Smith, James White, but I agree with anyone who says this contest needs more spots. If you add Dwight Howard, Carney, Robinson and Green to the previous four, that'd make one helluva contest.

I want to see an 8 man competition.
Nate, Carney, Iguodala, Flight White, Gerald Green, Josh Smith, David Lee (yes, X!) and special guest Taurian Fontenette.
Him vs. James White in a one on one battle would be just crazy, I'd go more apeshit (I love that word) than the fat German kid..

Now on what happened with Nate and Iggy: firstly, yes I'm biased but I'm not the biggest Nate Robinson fan just because I like the Knicks. It took him too long and it was kinda lame how he still ended up winning, but you gotta admit, Iguodala didn't deserve it either. He just wasn't the better dunker, the only nice one he did was the backboard thing.

I wouldn't want Dwight Howard in there. Sure he looks great throwing down 2 handed power dunks or alley oops from 25 feet, but that's not dunk contest material. I know some of the jock riders would want him in everything from the 3 point contest to a guest player in the WNBA All-Star game, but dunk contest? He's no Larry Nance.

his windmill was the best for me that's why i want dwight to be in the competition.

How many windmills is he going to do? He can't just go up and do a windmill every time it'd be boring as all fuck.

Did you see his dunk in the USA practice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzSjn9lBbJ4)? That was just downright spectatular.

It's cool and everything but not something I would be particularly interested in watching in a dunk contest.

1. James White, because no matter what he does it will be from at least the free throw line.
2. Kirk Snyder
3. Nate Robinson, reigning champ.
4. Gerald Green, he can literally but his chin on the rim.
