2000s All-Star Team

Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:32 am

Just like the NBA Live series, if you had to pick a starting lineup of 5 of the best players of the current decade, who would it be?

My picks:

Center: Shaquille O' Neal. Even as he ages, there is no doubt that any other center has been as prominent in the first half of this decade as O'Neal, with the Lakers in their three-peat, reinvigorating his game after being traded to Miami and being second in MVP voting, and now still showing flashes of excellence.

Power Forward: Dirk Nowitzki. This is probably one of the toughest choices out of the five, since there is competition from numerous others such as Garnett, JO, and Duncan. But there are few players like him who can establish dominance as a big man and still show shooting talent from a guard's range. Dirk is the deluxe package of all talents, and uses it well to help out his team.

Small Forward: Lebron James. Even though Carmelo Anthony could be a valid choice for some people, Lebron James is extremely well-rounded in a way that few players have been since Oscar Robertson's days in the league. James has the ability to put up records all over the stat lines.

Shooting Guard: Dwayne Wade. The reason Dwayne Wade is placed over the likes of Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Paul Pierce, etc. on this roster is that his talent already rivals them and as they age, he will become increasingly dominant to emerge as the best of the decade.

Point Guard: Jason Kidd. Aged has-been, yeah right. Jason Kidd is the most natural and pure point guard in this league since John Stockton. The finals runs in '02 and '03 and carrying the Nets deep in the playoffs in '04 while injured were all amazing feats. Even this year, as his scoring dipped 1-2 ppg, his rebounding and assists shot up at the same time, proving that he makes players around him better like no other. On any night, count on him to be a triple-double threat.

In consideration:

Center: Yao Ming, Ben Wallace, Andrew Bogut (?)

Power Forward: Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor, Chris Bosh, Elton Brand

Small Forward: Carmelo Anthony, Tracy McGrady, Shawn Marion, Andrei Kirilenko

Shooting Guard: Kobe Bryant, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter

Point Guard: Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Chauncey Billups, Tony Parker

I don't think it's fair to put LeBron or DWade or mention Melo, Dwight, Okafor, Bosh, Paul, or Bogut () because they've only been playing for 3 seasons, and it's only the year 2006. I'd be going with guys that are bonafide stars since atleast 2001. Kobe, Ray Allen, AI, VC (possibly), KG, TD, etc.

Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:48 am

Yeahh Bogut was a stretch I guess, but he and the other young guys will end up being increasingly dominant. Just think, by the end of the decade the 2003 draft class guys will have 7 years under their belt and they will be in their prime.

The team should be:
C-Shaq
PF-Dirk
SF-Tmac
SG-Kobe
PG-Kidd

All lebrons and stuff will be on the 2010s team.

Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:56 am

PG- Kidd
SG- Iverson
SF- Carter
PF- Garnett
C- Shaq

That is probably the most reasonable. I think KG is better then Dirk and Carter is better then McGrady.

Show Kobe some love.

C : O'Neal/Ming/Wallace
PF: Duncan/Garnett/Nowitzki
SF: McGrady/Carter/Marion
SG: Bryant/Iverson/Allen
PG: Kidd/Nash/Billups

Honourable mentions

C : Ilgauskas
PF: Brand
SF: Kirilenko
SG: Pierce
PG: Arenas

As much as I dislike Duncan and his game,
I choose him over Garnett due to what he has done for the Spurs organization.

Mon Aug 14, 2006 10:27 am

C: Shaq - Ben Wallace - Yao Ming
PF: Tim Duncan - Dirk Nowitzki - Chris Webber
SF: Kevin Garnett - Tracy McGrady - Vince Carter
SG: Kobe Bryant - Allen Iverson - LeBron James
PG: Jason Kidd - Steve Nash - Gary Payton

Not sure about CWebb and GP but they were great in the early 2000s... Webber before knee surgery and GP before he joined the Lakers and was getting old.

Mine is similar to yours, except the two forwards. :) I think the all 2000s team should be able to play defense and offense.

C- Shaq
PF- Tim Duncan
SF- Kevin Garnett (whether he plays PF, SF, etc.)
SG- Kobe Bryant
PG- Jason Kidd

Cmon now I know you said late 2000's and all, but how can you put Greg Oden in there and he isn't even in teh NBA yet? :? That's too far fetched because anything can happen between now and the time he makes it to the league.

Besides Shaq, there is no current center that will truly be remembered for a long time. Bogut's status is unknown, but he'll probably be an All-Star a few times and then retire quietly.

Are you saying the best of 2000 to now, or what will be the 2000 team in 2009?

Guessing at how much some guys will develop...

PG - Nash

2 MVPs will go a long way...if he wins a championship he'll be cemented in as THE point guard. I love Kidd but i think he'll be more remembered for his play in the 90s. Iverson is also very deserving.

SG - Ron Mercer

Obviously.

SF - Bron

Not much competition at the 3 this decade anyway, unless Kobe permanently moves to SF starting next season.

PF - Duncan

His resume has too much to for KG or Nowtizki to compete with, although if Nowitzki wins the next 3 championships he can probably beat Duncan out.
He doesn't look better than KG or Dirk now, but it was a different story 6 years ago.

Plus, Duncan was sent by the Devil to destroy the NBA. He's played exactly 666 games.

C - Shaq

It's sad that he's perhaps 50% of what he was and he still dominates the C position. Center is a lost art...bring back Kareem & Olajuwon.

Tue Aug 15, 2006 3:56 am

PG-Kidd(playmaker)/Nash/Francis
SG-Bryant( Consistenet Scorer)/ Mcgrady/Iverson
SF-Bron (Potentul)
PF-DUNCAN(All NBA) /GARNETT/Dirk
C- YAO/Ben Wallace

Tue Aug 15, 2006 4:07 am

As of right now

C-Shaq/Webber
PF-Duncan/Garnett
SF-Bryant/Dirk
SG-Iverson/McGrady
PG-Nash/Kidd

This will definitely change when 2010 gets closer.

Right on the money, though I think maybe Kidd could be slipped in there at PG, though you really cant go wrong either way, they both had awesome years and Iverson walked away with an MVP trophy.
