New All-Star Weekend Ideas?

Sat Jul 22, 2006 1:21 pm

I basically stole this idea from the RealGM board. As the title suggests, are there any ideas you have such as new events or changes made you would want for the All-Star weekend? Funny suggestions are welcome, but try to also have som realistic ideas.

Sat Jul 22, 2006 1:24 pm

well not really..they can keep it the way they want..well maybe il think of some later but they are pretty good now...idk but for the GAME they should include mor emodes other than just dunk contest, rook challenge, shootout, and allstar game.

oh wait are they going to have super lights at the all star weekend in las vegas? and is there an arena in las vegas?

A 1 on 1 competition is the obvious idea.

Imagine Vince Carter vs. Kobe Bryant with the winner playing the winner of Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. That would be cool.

oh yeah actually that would be nice..we never see 1on1s so yeah thats a good idea..
well i got no ideas..

1 on 1 and 2 on 2 would be fantastic events. imagine Wade and Shaq v Kobe and Odom. That would be awesome. Maybe have two dunk contests? the rising star one (with 1st and 2nd year players) then one with older nba players (like Lebron, Wade, Carmelo, Jefferson)

They already tried the 3 on 3 idea a few times with an NBA player, a legend, a WNBA star and a celebrity, but those never worked out too well.

One thing I'd like to see changed is for the various skills competitions, use the players playing in the All Star game!!! Select the competitors from those rosters, like the Home Run derby in baseball or any of the skills competitions in the NHL. Screw the stupid dunk competition rule about 3 years in the league, make the superstars compete. And put it on the ballot, so fans can vote for who they want to see in the various competitions. That way guys like Carter or LeBron won't be able to reject any "invitations."

One thing I'd like to see added is a longer skills competition (like th ones the PGs do) with relay teams. Use the whole court and set up more stations, and make it more of a relay race between the conferences.

i think NBA would rather promote a team game rather than 1-on-1.

Sat Jul 22, 2006 4:31 pm

yeah that would be cool to see team skills challenge, or more team-oriented events so the players are more motivated. maybe better rewards would help motivation too?

You can't force them to compete in those contests unless you pay them, which wouldnt be a bad idea. And i do agree with the ballot selections. There should be more motivation to actually compete in those events.

A free-throw chalenge, kinda like the 3pt thing, but if you miss a free throw your score ends there (most free throws in a row)

It's not a terrible idea, but it'd get boring when players go over the 100s. My old basketball coach (in his 30s, 'above average weight') could already hit about 30 straight I think, so imagine what these guys who have a chance to practice every day can do.

How about a HORSE dunk contest? Sorta like in the NBA Live game, but with two dunkers up against each other. One eliminates the other when one person screws up, or maybe gets a lower score.

How about a rap contest? C-Webb vs. Shaq, and the winner will compete against the winner of the match Iverson vs. Lamar Odom.

Sun Jul 23, 2006 12:28 am

BRING BACK 2-BALL!

But seriously, they just need to get rid of the 3 year restriction on the dunk contest.

Sun Jul 23, 2006 4:07 am

I think they should do a HORSE competition. It would be fun to see the NBA players doing all kinds of trick shots and stuff. And the whole "HORSE DUNK" think could be integrated into that.

It'd be fun, but it'd probably be something they do on the side like the Playstation NBA Live contest they have between the rookies or something like that.

IDk if it would air on tv though..might not be as approapriate if they freestyle. but it would definitely be funny..

and i think we all agree on getting rid of the 3-year rule for the dunk contest now, i would like to see VC do more dunks...and actually they should have more challenges like in situations...like for example how many people can you dunk over..how many people can you deek out...how far can the ball go when you block it..how far can you shoot from?

Sun Jul 23, 2006 6:53 am

Here's the main problems with those ideas jerry:
1) Veteran guys like Vince won't compete in the dunk comp. unless they're paid extra, which is stupid. I'd rather him earn nothing and have to watch rookie second rounders attempt lesser dunks.
2) No one ever dunks "over" anyone. Everyone who has done it has had the person either lean backwards or duck their head, so its something thats too hard to judge. And no one is going to get more than one, and if anyone attempts more, there can be serious injury risks.
3) No one ever gets "deeked" out, players just go around them. Crossovers where a player makes the other look stupid happen maybe 5-6 times a season, so I doubt you'll get multiples of that in one competition, especially when the "deek-ee" knows what is coming.
4) How far a ball goes after a block is irrevelant. The whole point of a block is to change possession, not just to look cool. Someone should tell half the NBA that. What's the point of blocking the shot if the team jsut gets it right back? Besides the fact that you get to scream and flex your muscles "Zo-style."
5) They have the half court shot in one of the competitions, and one shot for them is hard enough. Making them try it mulitple times from other places or further back would be embarrasing.

Sun Jul 23, 2006 7:17 am

well i hope you realise im not talkin about like when i say dunking over and deeking nba players, i meant like to those "helpers" who like just hold the ball or sit or somethin in dunk competitions... and as for dunking over them they can have people sitting on a bench and then someone trying to dunk over

Sun Jul 23, 2006 8:48 am

No more WNBA players on the court would be nice.

Sun Jul 23, 2006 9:06 am

What about pitting NBA players against an And1 streetball allstar team. Would be very exciting to watch. But ensure that the NBA players are guys with skills and flair with the basketball not guys like Tim Duncan.

Sun Jul 23, 2006 9:10 am

The And1 guys would get dominated. They're content to spend their careers beating on lesser players who also play no defense, while complaining that they never got the chance to play pro.

Sun Jul 23, 2006 9:10 am

horse

1 on 1,[tmac vs. kobe, wade vs. iverson, shaq vs. ben, KG vs. Amare, Marbury vs. Francis, Arenas vs. B. Davis.. it'd be interesting]

"superdunk" contest [all eligible]

Air-Brick Shootout [shaq, yao, ben wallace, curry, mourning, Mutumbo etc. in a 3point contest..it will be funny and people will enjoy the air balls and when they make it]

4point shoot out ( make a 4pointer line near half court)

Sun Jul 23, 2006 9:55 am

Amphatoast wrote:4point shoot out ( make a 4pointer line near half court)

Yea thats a good idea, or maybe the 3-PT shootout players get like 3 points for making it

Sun Jul 23, 2006 11:33 am

Maybe the dunk contest could be interesting again if the NBA invites 4 NBA players and 4 non-NBA players, all of them dunk masters. For example Kadour Ziani, Abdul-Bamba, The Helicopter and the Air up there and 4 NBA players, like James White, Josh Smith, Nate Robinson and Rudy Gay. (Y)
