on a few teams' websites they have a feature going where a player talks about why they wear their number...

most wear it because someone else wore their number, it was a number of their idol, or it was a number worn by someone in their family, or a combination.

from other stuff I've read (since I can't go to nba.com since it's blocked in my office), ome pick a number that no one else has used so they'll be different and others use 0 or 00 to remind themselves that they started out as nothing to keep them humble
